I guess its not welfare when Curt Schilling gets it. I wonder if this thread will have as many comments as the welfare queen thread from the other day.

Too bad, KoA was an okay game.

But one has to chuckle at the irony of a "small government" conservative losing his company because he couldn't suck on the taxpayer teat.

Ah, they went with the Christie job creation plan: give employers free money to make it look like your state is an attractive place to do business.

Kingdoms of Amalur isn't a bad game, shame it didn't do better.

It's release timing was unfortunate. It didn't have a chance against skyrim.

No, but you can blame Lincoln Chaffee, which is pretty much the same thing.

Just in case this foreknowledge helps anyone in the thread, you don't need to spend a billion dollars and hire 500 people just to knock out a quick DnD thing. There are engines to do the graphics already and it would probably suffice to send your best writers on a no questions asked "retreat" in Hawaii. Everything else can be done by interns with Ruby experience.

I don't know what went wrong here in terms of business or corruption or incompetence, but IMHO It shouldn't take $100M to produce a game.

yea, I was hoping his game would wind up being a homerun, but it looks like it's just a shut out

Hey look on the bright side....maybe Shill came be vice president now...Romney/Shcilling...has a ring to it.

Yup more small government people looking for government hand outs. I wonder if he got a paycheck on the way out the door?

BTW what happens to the support on his game? Are all those people out of $60 now?

Oh no - it's welfare. $75 million to a goddamn GAME studio??!!! That focuses on MMORPGs, an incredibly difficult market to break into?

Pure stupidity all around.

austin_millbarge: Conservatives: "It's different when WE do it"!

I wasn't aware conservatives were still pretending that they wanted their insane policies applied uniformly. I thought we'd gotten to the point where they were basically pretty clear with the fact that they believe the only people their wild-west bullshiat should be applied to are the poor and minorities while the wealthy continue to just write their own rules by signing checks so they can drain the public coffers and roll back worker protections like it's 1899.

/ conservatism: because fark you, I got mine..... but I also want yours

Looked like a pretty rude way to fire people too, just a curt statement in an email.

It never established an identity. I saw it at PAXEast and still didn't know what it's deal was.

I'm having a heart attack from not being surprised.

Since the MMO space is all but dead, how's the Social Gaming space doing? Looks like those employees backed the wrong horse.

Yep, missed opportunity there. Give the guys on the block a chance. One at bat, if you can get wood on the ball, you keep your job.

How could a state be stupid enough to loan Curt Schilling $75 million?

Had no one in Rhode Island ever seen an interview with this guy? He's dumber than a bag of hair.

They are still pretending. It's just that more and more middle of the road people are waking up to their bullsh*t hypocrisy.

I used to work in the same building that their office was in before they moved to RI.
Their entrance was beautiful; full time receptionist, nice furniture, fresh flowers, and a giant logo.
This is exactly what the 90s .com startups looked like.
Here's a hint; if a company spends money on bling before they've earned so much as one red cent think twice about investing in them.

I guess it's free enterprise when you don't pay back your loans.

Apparently they needed 3 million units sold just to break even on Amalur. That's an almost ridiculous number of sales for a start-up's first title.

Wait a minute. There was a guy in an earlier thread claiming inside knowledge that all was well at 38 Studios. Now I feel betrayed.

You're just mad because Pokey Reese's loan application to start a video game business in Rhode Island was rejected after he was told that he's not "economically viable"

Scarrio: Apparently they needed 3 million units sold just to break even on Amalur. That's an almost ridiculous number of sales for a start-up's first title.

They probably needed that many to break even on buying Big Huge Games. Remember, the RI studio hasn't produced anything since it was created in 2006. Amalur was all BHG.

WTS one copy of Kingdoms of Amalur, slightly used.

Almost?

And apparently, the only reason it needed to move so many units is because they were expecting it to fund Copernicus (their mummorpurger) as well.

For all the bleating the libtards in this thread are doing about conservatives - the Democrats gave Schilling the money in the first place. So pretty much people as stupid as every liberal in this thread.

Suck it up, rub some paint on it on get back out there.

2012-05-25 10:01:54 AM
They would have to pay back 112 million over the course of 20 years, with interest. The first payment of 4.1 million didn't even happen. All props to them for making a good game and all, but, how did they honestly think they were going to come up with all that money every year? Since KoA:R was not an MMO, there was no self sustaining point for the game aside from DLC (I bought all of them, too).

It just seemed like a bad business decision for the company and the loaner, a no win situation for either, to be honest.

TFA says Linc was against the loan when running for governor in 2010. The way it was written makes me think that the grant was given before he took office.

And FWIW, I know a bunch of people that worked in the Timonium (MD) office. Real sad for them, even though they knew it was coming for at least a week (or, I knew that they knew a week in advance).

I picked KoA up about 2-3 weeks after it came out. Amazon was had it on sale for $35-40 for the 360. At the time I thought it was a bad sign they were dropping it that much (even temporarily) so close to launch.

Got bored with it about halfway through. Tried to pick it up again about a month ago and gave up for good. It joins a very small group of games I just gave up on because they couldn't hold my interest. I don't mind crappy games, but boring games I cannot stand.

This is the guy that signed an $8 million contract to pitch for the Red Sox in 2008 knowing full well that he had already suffered a career ending injury and wouldn't be able to pitch an inning.

Is the state of Rhode Island surprised that he decided to fleece them of $75 million?

2012-05-25 10:03:32 AM
Schilling was always such a smug, holier than thou, sock sucker. I just can't feel bad for him. I do feel for those employees, though.

Democrat != liberal.

This is Rhode Island we're talking about, so chances are good the governor at the time was a corporatist regardless of party. This does let Chafee off the hook, though.

/there's a reason your credit card company is based in Rhode Island.
