Blueintheballs: So yanks study mathematic, right?

No, we study mathematics as well. It's just that we identify plural nouns correctly, and when constructing abbreviated forms we do not assume that any old trailing "s" means that a noun is plural.

For example, would you say "The study of mathematics are..." or "The study of mathematics is...". If you choose "is" over "are" then you're treating "mathematics" as a singular noun and the abbreviated form would likewise not be plural.

/ To be fair, the plurality of "mathematics" has been a matter of some debate for centuries.

It's a British thing to refer to it as Maths instead of just Math. The Brits be crazy like that.

FirstNationalBastard: zzrhardy: profplump: t's just that we identify plural nouns correctly....

When your simplified English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valleygirl, inner-city slang and various grunts, don't presume to correct people who still speak proper English.

Thanks.

Actually, haven't there been articles stating that America's version of English is actually closer to that mythical "real" English than what the Brits currently use?

When I am not being snarky I use a very simple system: don't correct people who are using the proper English for their locality.

I can see your point. There's no right and wrong when it comes to this organic language we use. Though I do personally consider maths as a plural containing different subsets such as algebra, calculus, arithmetic etc.

Because in the UK they study "mathematics", not "mathematic" (whatever that is).
