At least we have food. Think of all the people that would give up everything for a day by day meal like these.

Strangely, the only decent meals I ate in my public schools I paid 1.75 or the like for. It's farking uncomfortable living between public assistance and being well enough off to not need help.

/Learned that last year

If they can't find a meal every day then what else could they have to give up?

While on a WestPac during my stint in the USMC, the boat I was stationed on did a breakout (bring frozen cases of food from the freezer up to the cooler). The cases of meat said: "Grade E Meat: For Prisoner or Military Consumption Only". Made me feel special and appreciated.

It looks like the pizza has improved a bit since I was in school. Pepperoni tastes much better when it's sliced instead of cubed.

jabelar: High carbs make fatties.

Whatever your diet beliefs, those meals look like fast food that I'd hope (I realize sadly I'm wrong) most people would only give to their kids as a special treat every few weeks.

THIS. I'm not necessaraly preaching Atkins or anything but potatoes and corn should not be your only veggies.

I always thought those Mexican pizzas smelled like feet.

I fully expected more advertising/product placement with the school lunches. Administrators are clearly behind the times...make those dollars where you can.

Franco: Happy Hours: Are kids not allowed to take lunchboxes or sack lunches to school anymore?

Both parents (if they aren't divorced) are working and don't have time to pack a meal.

If they don't have 5 minutes to pack a meal for their kids then they shouldn't have had kids.

Alternatively they could get the kids to pack a meal. It takes all of about 5 minutes and that would include time to write the kid's name on the paper bag in fancy calligraphy.

Airline food begs to differ. I'd have had a hard time if that were the choice.

SFUSD raised the lunch price to $3 a day so the boy gets a packed lunch every day. He recently let it slip that he was trading his Chicken in a Biscuit crackers for dried seaweed snacks.

2012-05-24 10:55:53 PM

Lawnchair: That said, very nearly half of the students in the US qualify for free or reduced lunches. While their parents might have the money to send a lunch, they are generally poor and there's virtually no way to pack a lunch cheaper than 65 cents, let alone free.

Yep. I qualified for free lunch and breakfast at school every year. Probably was the only reason why I didn't have scurvy or some other vitamin deficiency. Though once I got to high school I was too embarrassed to be seen picking up the free lunch so I just felt hungry all afternoon.

Probably because both are supplied byAramark.

fark this company, right in the ear.

My MIL was a lunchlady back in the day, and when we were kids, they actually COOKED the food on site.

I specifically remember the lunch lady telling my mother that I was not eating my vegetables, and getting in trouble for that.

If your steak is well done with A-1, that means whoever cooked your steak didn't know that if a steak is made well, you don't need sauce.

ENDING CHILDHOOD OBESITY SHOULD BE OUR NATION'S NO.1 PRIORITY

Unless it means the cost of school lunches goes up 5 percent and PepsiCo gets mad at us. Then fark the kids.

I don't blame her for the problem, but I do blame her for skirting the real cause: schools and parents encouraging shiatty diets.

There are lots of people who shouldn't have had kids but they did so we have to deal with the reality of the situation, not what we wish it would be.

El Supe: The easiest one was the lunch with the metal fork, had to be school food, that fork could be a potential weapon in prison

That one looks like it's from Japan. I had that very meal several times as a teacher there. I will say that lunches there were usually better than what they have in that picture, and were a lot better than what I got in school. For one thing, the Japanese lunches has real fruit and whole, unprocessed vegetables.

You're a damn fine woman.

Maybe its just me, but most of the school food looked like something I'd be willing to eat if I was hungry and in a rush or something. I'd rather have a taste sensation like a gas station sandwich over the prison food, though.

our undergrad was catered by Sodexho, which conveniently also caters for prison, and from what we could tell, our food was worse than prison food (at least prisons make money)

2012-05-24 11:06:36 PM
Prison food: check for larger portion size, "spicy" things
School food: check for smaller portions, chocolate milk, nuggets

Later on, the "tray shape" gives it away.

2012-05-24 11:06:47 PM
Also if they have plastic cookware it's prison. Which is odd because if you snap the plastic fork you get a nice shank right there. Better to have metal cookware and metal detectors to catch any smuggled contraband.

Triumph: Hospital food trumps all.

Last time I was in the hospital, I had a pretty good menu, including such things as a flame-grilled teriyaki salmon filet with rice and vegetables, plus a side of fresh sliced mango. Not too bad really. I could also get decent burgers and artisan-bread sandwiches. My local hospital ain't too bad on the food.

Occasionally, prisoners with diabetes etc. sue. So they have to bump the quality up a little. But kids'll eat anything, so screw 'em.

madgonad: I went through all of them and didn't get any wrong. I was surprised that prison food was so well balanced. I was expecting lower quality.

Really? I got them all right too, and I thought the prison food was remarkably shiatty. A few of the school meals looked almost decent.

Because schools should be about food, not learning.

How dare parents think that they could send their kids to school with food of their own!

Imagine the disaster this country would have become had we not had school lunch in the 1920s and 1930s.

If you want your little snowflake to eat better, then move to a high tax district or pay for a better school. My tax dollars can be put to better use than upscale dining for 8 year olds.
Furthermore, the high calorie counts are good for kids that may not get much more at home. If they pig out at home too, then make them go walk it off.

2012-05-24 11:26:05 PM
None of it really looked all that bad to me. One of the worst ones I remember as a kid was the weird turkey and potatoes with the snot gravy on top. But our lunches were something like 85 cents so we never complained...that much

\also love the square pizza
\\had much worse food than that when I was in county. They didn't even serve it on trays just in paper containers.

It was about 50-50 withe the prison food having utensils. I was about 90% right when it came to looking for packaging. Packaging turns into paper shivs. I assume you can hide paper pulp in cheeks and under tongues.
