I kind of miss that rectangular pizza. Not that it was any good. There's just a nostalgia factor involved.

That's so sad. All of the school foods seem to be variations of the color yellow.

Had a link some time back comparing school lunches from around the world. Ours was rather pathetic compared.

There's nothing wrong with PB&Js, but you can't serve em anymore.

There's actually an uncomfortable number of things schools and prisons have in common.

Reminds me of my favorite road game: Driving down a country highway you see a series of tall lights and a fence surrounding an industrial looking building....Prison or High School?

If you have a kid, be prepared to feed it.
If you go to jail, be prepared to eat it.

Easy to tell even if you've not been through the corrections system. The plainer it is, the more likely it's going to be prison food.

I always had bag lunch at school. What's with these fancy cafeterias where they make food?

I went through all of them and didn't get any wrong. I was surprised that prison food was so well balanced. I was expecting lower quality.

2012-05-24 10:30:22 PM
You could tell the school lunches because they all had ketchup packets. That's their vegetable.

Happy Hours: Are kids not allowed to take lunchboxes or sack lunches to school anymore?

Both parents (if they aren't divorced) are working and don't have time to pack a meal.

It can't be as bad as the cabbage rolls at the Terre Haute Federal Pen.
Or that oatmeal at the Cook County slammer.

Shostie: I kind of miss that rectangular pizza. Not that it was any good. There's just a nostalgia factor involved.

There's nothing special (better or worse) about square pizza... it's just made square instead of round. I make it like that at home all of the time.

2012-05-24 10:33:40 PM
the ones in the near-indestructible plastic trays are the prison ones. they make them difficult to break into shards for obvious reasons.

those trays weigh like 3lb empty so i suppose you could beat someone to death with it, but it would take a while.

In prison you don't need permission to take a leak.

Apparently.

High carbs make fatties.

Whatever your diet beliefs, those meals look like fast food that I'd hope (I realize sadly I'm wrong) most people would only give to their kids as a special treat every few weeks.

I know some people do eat really poorly. When I was a kid, one of my best friend's mom would send us out to McDonalds to get food for her, but she'd get us to buy a weeks worth of meals at once and then freeze them (seriously, I'm not joking or exaggerating). She ended up going through three rounds of bypass surgeries and then eventually died of heart problems ...

Happy Hours: Are kids not allowed to take lunchboxes or sack lunches to school anymore?

They generally are allowed to. With various restrictions on things like peanuts (allergies), requiring clear plastic baggies/boxes (TSA-era paranoia), and in one school I've spent time in, the students who brown-bagged were segregated to their own table at lunch-time (trying to restrict some clever entrepreneurial kids who were buying junk food at Walmart prices then re-selling it at a good profit but half the price of the school-authorized vending machines).

That said, very nearly half of the students in the US qualify for free or reduced lunches. While their parents might have the money to send a lunch, they are generally poor and there's virtually no way to pack a lunch cheaper than 65 cents, let alone free.

BTW, you actually have to be pretty damned poor to qualify. And half the kids in the country do. And we're very nearly to the point where half the babies born in the nation are born under Medicaid.

The easiest one was the lunch with the metal fork, had to be school food, that fork could be a potential weapon in prison

Triumph: Hospital food trumps all.

Funny, the hospital down the street serves dolphin (mahi-mahi) on Monday and grouper fillet on Wed.

You don't think that they serve the room food to the Docs do you?

Oh give 'em time. Some district somewhere will start serving it in the cafeteria to cut back on costs so the money can be spent on important things. Like sports

Just east of Atlanta, there's a county called Rockdale. Years ago, they had some old lady that used to cook up the jail's food. It was so good--all the local lawyers, cops and judges would find an excuse to be there around meal-time.

Coolstorybro I know.

/I've eaten a few jail meals, and they were pretty good. No different than a school lunch or old-school government cafeteria...

Sad, at least the prison food seems to have things that aren't deep fried yellow turds. Glad I pack my kid's lunch.

That's what I thought too. "Would you like a potential shiv instrument with your food"

I expected all the prison food to be chili con carne.
