There was this wonderfully sweet lady who would take care of me when I was sick and home from school while my mom was at work. She live a few houses down and was like a grandmother to me. A few months ago when she died I found out that she had been a successful vaudeville performer. That's how she and her husband met. He was in the navy and saw one of her acts. They got married and were together until the day she died.

I've known the woman my whole life and never had a clue.

I'm just guessing, but maybe proportionate dwarfs were more in demand on vaudeville. The draw would be seeing miniature people, not disproportionate short people.
