LarryDan43: Mrtraveler01: Here's how Limbaugh's numbers shook out in other major markets in the 12-plus demo:

Los Angeles: No change in March; no change in April.

Chicago: 6 percent increase in March; 8 percent decline in April.

Dallas: 16 percent increase in March; 2 percent increase in April.

Houston: 3 percent increase in March; 16 percent decline in April.

Miami: 21 percent increase in March; 19 percent decline in April.

So in Dallas his ratings grew by 18% and in Houston they dropped by 13%. Can someone explain to me how the ratings between these two cities can be so radically different?

I like to follow the radio industry and was wondering if it has to do with the stations his show is on in each city.

I would guess stronger competition from other talk radio stations in Houston.

Looking at the ratings for the Houston affiliate (KTRH), they went down overall between March and April so I bet that had something to do with it.

Jane has 100 apples. Someone takes 40% of her apples, such that she has 60 left. Then someone gives her 55% more apples than the ones she has left (33, which is 60 * .55). How many apples does Jane have left?

None, Jane is fat and she ate them.

Fat people don't eat apples.

55% were candy covered and 45% were caramel covered. The remaining had caramel and nuts.

Mrtraveler01: Why bother with corporate welfare when you want to regulate them in the least amount possible.

Well, before you can take away regulation, you have to take away their government backing. That's what causes the perverse incentives and too-big-to-fail, etc. The main one is the Federal Reserve's backing of these giant banks. But you can't just build up these huge corporations for generations with the help of the government and then unleash them with no regulation at all. (A lot of those regulations are for their benefit anyway.) You would have to break them up and make the new smaller entities compete and feel actual market forces and then gradually let off with the regulations. The regulations that benefit the big players at the expense of the little ones could be scrapped right away.

the 55% surge came before the 40% decline.
therefore, for 100 listeners.

a 55% surge brings the number up to 155.

then you get the 40% drop.

.4(155) = 62 listeners lost.

subtract that from 155 and you got 93.

first dude was right.

Rapmaster2000: Rapmaster2000: coeyagi: hillbillypharmacist: A decrease of 40% after an increase of 55% gives a 7% total decrease.

(X - 0.4X) = y
y + y(0.55) = z

0.6x = y

0.6x + (0.6x)(0.55) = z

0.6x + 0.33x = z

0.93x = z

This equals a 7 percent loss if the 40% decrease is BEFORE the 55% increase, which is what the article states. Yes, you're math is correct but not for the condition you stated.

Also, it equals a 7% loss if the 40% decrease is AFTER the 55% increase.

100* (1+0.55) = 155.

155* (1-0.4) = 93.

(100 - 93) / 100 = 0.07

0.07 * 100 - 7%

Damnit: 0.07 * 100 = 7%

Fair enough, but that was not the condition stated by the headline, but I stand (half) corrected.

I stand corrected (sorta, again): the headline, as written, is too farking ambiguous to tell what happened first, the decrease or the increase. As it stands, it doesn't matter, the math results in a 7 percent decrease in either case, so fark it, let's go bowling, dude.

His ratings never, ever, dropped by 40% or even 20%, nor was the faked up boycott led by Media Matters that tried to intimidate businesses in to dropping their advertising effective.

But since your sooooo concerned about sexism. I'm sure you're absolutely outraged by the fact that a woman working for Glenn Beck was recently photo shopped so that it appeared as if she were giving oral sex, the accompanying statement being something akin to 'she's smart and pretty but because she's a conservative she deserves a phallus in her mouth'

Wait, wait, let me guess... Because it was Hustler that did this then its "not the same!", just like its "not the same!" as every other time a liberal spews sexist comments about a conservative woman? Glenn Beck's Fox News show was still getting respectable ratings, but they axed it because the advertising revenue shriveled up and blew away.

It's not how many people listen to your show that matters; it's how many of them buy the products they are told to buy.

Once again I will restate, unless we leave Limbaugh alone and allow him to start quoting Hitler or doing more absolutely racist crap, his listening audience does not care.

People don't care he goes on vacation to another country with a crapload of Viagra, or calls everyone out on their sins while abusing Oxy until he went deaf.

In fact everytime Limbaugh angers a whiny 'liberal', an angel gets a new pair of wings. This is a little known fact.

Leave him alone, allow him to continue to stew in obscurity until his inner Id cries out for attention eventually forcing him to do say something that can't be 'apologized for' and making him do podcasts from his living room on random afternoons as his only outlet.

That is the only solution.

Robo Beat: CSB time: A friend of mine had a Nielsen diary way back when, which is where TV ratings come from. I was over her place visiting, and I found it sitting on the TV cabinet. I remarked to her that I was surprised, because I've never had one, and I'd never met anyone else who'd ever had one nor knew anyone who'd ever had one. She told me that when they give you the diary, part of the contract is that you agree not to disclose to anyone outside of your household that you've got a Nielsen diary. Not sure what she got out of the deal; probably some gift certificates or something like that.

I got a diary last year (or was it early this year?). I got two buck for an initial survey that did not ask what shows I watched. Afterward I got a diary for one week's viewing. If memory serves I got five bucks for it (though it might have been some other trivial amount.)

I signed no contract with Nielsen. I merely filled out the diary.

Since I dropped cable and very rarely watch broadcast, I asked if I should note my DVD viewing and Netflix streaming. I was told I could do that so I did. The diary asked what channels I had access to, so I did go through my channels my can receive and listed them. I made a note of this in the comments section. Unless my diary was tossed out as an outlier, I hurt overall TV ratings.

Apparently now it's just a nondescript box that sits on top of your TV, rather than a book, though that certainly doesn't keep you from turning on the TV and setting it to PBS before you go to work.

I read years ago that the box has you enter who is watching. They do not exclusively use the box, they still use diaries as well. In any event, the diary has you list viewing of everyone in the house. Indeed if you watched TV with your friend, she should have indicated that you watched assuming that here diary worked the same way as mine did. The diary has columns for different people and enough for most households who don't have a huge TV watch party.

I am sure that Nielsen is smart enough to notice a channel is always on during something that appears to be a work schedule. That would stick out like a sour thumb. Real viewers don't generally watch during the day 8-9 hours of the same channel without a break followed by typical viewing.

I might also note that they ask question related to possible conflicts of interest. They ask question to determine if I worked for, owned, etc. anything related to TV.
