A decrease of 40% after an increase of 55% gives a 7% total decrease.

Anybody that still trumpets Limbaugh's popularity is not worth listening to. Just like Limbaugh himself.

It's the same reason conservatives listen. People like to be mad, especially when they can feel righteous at the same time.

I can't imagine anyone but a brainwashed "Dittohead" voluntarily listening to his show. Although that's not true, I did play a clip from an article about that Fluke debacle and someone called in and told him that support of gay marriage is rising and he of course immediately dumped the caller and went on a tirade that I eventually shut off.

Traditionally people would fill out a book of their listening habits, but more recently the Personal People Meter gathers codes from frequencies you can't hear and records what you're listening to and when. The latter of course being far more accurate.

But that only keeps him around and makes him rich (worth more than a quarter of a billion dollars). When he started (late 80's) he was more of a smaller government, personal responsibility guy. The religious right BS didn't creep in until the GOP shifted. It's like he's adjusted to piss off MORE people.

Personally, I can't stand him. He's like a freeper with a microphone. You can't have a libertarian POV on this show.

Arbitron baby! A legacy media tracking outfit called Arbitron sends out "Radio Diaries" to randomly chosen addresses, along with a letter asking the chosen to record their radio listening habits in the diary, and a crisp new American $1 bill. After a month, they send another letter asking for the diary back, along with yet another $1 bill.

Back in the early '90's, I got one of these diaries in the mail. I filled it with my local PRI station (all day, every day) and spent the dollar on a burger. I kept the second dollar stuck to my 'fridge for lulz, then dropped it in a drawer and forgot about it. Dug it out now just for you, you farkers:

My mom used to do this when I was a kid. She would put him on while driving and get all pissed off. I asked why she didn't just turn it off and she said that it got her blood going.

I like to hear opinions that are different than mine and don't really like having opinions that I already hold reinforced but I can't listen to conservative talk radio. It just makes me feel slimy and gross. Instead I tend to read conservative news sites (anyone looking at my web history would probably think I'm a right wing wackjob, instead of a limp wristed lefty).

I don't get the intentionally being pissed off thing. There is enough in the world to piss me off, I don't need to go out looking for it.

CSB time: A friend of mine had a Nielsen diary way back when, which is where TV ratings come from. I was over her place visiting, and I found it sitting on the TV cabinet. I remarked to her that I was surprised, because I've never had one, and I'd never met anyone else who'd ever had one nor knew anyone who'd ever had one. She told me that when they give you the diary, part of the contract is that you agree not to disclose to anyone outside of your household that you've got a Nielsen diary. Not sure what she got out of the deal; probably some gift certificates or something like that.

Apparently now it's just a nondescript box that sits on top of your TV, rather than a book, though that certainly doesn't keep you from turning on the TV and setting it to PBS before you go to work.

Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes a day. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.

Researcher: Answer most commonly given: "I want to see what he'll say next."

I've spent years trying to understand why people want to listen to a middle-aged man biatch and moan. Then I figured out that the appeal was the 30% of each show spent telling the listeners how honest, hard-working, and intelligent they are, another 50% telling the listeners how all their problems are caused by "the bad people" (liberals, minorities, foreigners, feminists, your ex-wife and that lousy judge that took all your money), 15% spent on group beat down of callers aka "the bad people", and the rest on Huey Lewis intros.

Basically, it's a support group for the career frustrated and/or the emotionally burned. It pumps up the self-esteem of the listeners. It's not really about being conservative or liberal. It's just that angry middle-aged men trend conservative so that's where we have to go with the content. It's also why liberal talk radio won't ever work.

Audience numbers on Limbaugh's show suggest that of the 312 million people in America, there's a marginal group of about 2,000,000 retired white men over 70 who can stomach listening to Rush Limbaugh for more than ten seconds. Of these, perhaps 1.5 million regularly do. Mostly shut ins and grumpy old men whose wives have become deaf from running the vacuum cleaner in order to cover their insane right wing rants.

Facts: http://www.quantcast.com/rushlimbaugh.com

Rush Limbaugh's Audience May Be Much Smaller Than You Think
Jim Edwards|March 13, 2012|24,786|103

(Screengrab) As Rush Limbaugh's show enters a second week largely without advertisers -- except, ironically, for government-sponsored public service announcements -- it's worth asking how big a sacrifice it is for brands such as AOL and AllState to stay away from the show.

Limbaugh's show reaches 15 - 20 million people weekly across more than 600 radio stations on which he is syndicated, it is frequently reported.

Or does it?

We asked Arbitron, the radio ratings measurement service, to give us data for Limbaugh. This is what spokesperson Kim Myers said:

"Unfortunately, we don't have show specific data for network programs. The syndicators, Premiere Radio Networks, are the only ones that have the station clearances. Without that, we can't figure out the show ratings data."

"If you want to look at the number of different listeners tuning into Rush's show, you'll want to look at CUME [the cumulative number of people who listen to the show weekly].Again, the only place you can get that information is through Premiere Radio Networks which is based in Los Angeles."

To put that simply, the only reason we "know" that 15 million people listen to Limbaugh is because the company that gets paid for syndicating Limbaugh tells us so. A message asking PRN to explain their methodology was not immediately returned.

A couple of years ago, the Washington Post tried to get to the bottom of the mystery:

"... estimates of Limbaugh's nationwide (and overseas) audience are exercises in guesswork, slippery methodology and suspect data. Limbaugh himself has muddied the water with the claim that he reaches 20 million people a week, although there's no independent support for that figure."

"Premiere Radio Networks, Limbaugh's national syndicator, estimated last year that 3.59 million people were in Limbaugh's audience during an average quarter-hour of his program, based on a review of Arbitron's piecemeal data about hundreds of stations."

"Because people typically tune in and tune out of stations, however, that number doesn't reflect how many individuals cumulatively listened at some point during the week. What's more, Premiere's figure is based on data from the first three months of 2008, a virtual lifetime ago in the fast-moving radio business."

Basically, this "15-20 million" number has been floating around the media unaudited for four years. Even if you assume, generously, that the CUME number holds true, here is how that would break down in real life, according to Media Matters:

"...common industry shorthand to determine the actual size of a radio audience at any given moment is to cut the cume figure down by a factor of 10, which would mean Limbaugh's 20 million becomes 2 million. Or, if you take the more modest cume number of 14 million, which some inside the industry have used to judge the talker's audience, Limbaugh's rating becomes 1.4 million, which is roughly the same size audience that Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann get each night on cable TV."

So there is it: Absent better data, only 1.4 million people listen to Limbaugh at any one time.

hillbillypharmacist: A decrease of 40% after an increase of 55% gives a 7% total decrease.

(X - 0.4X) = y
y + y(0.55) = z

0.6x = y

0.6x + (0.6x)(0.55) = z

0.6x + 0.33x = z

0.93x = z

This equals a 7 percent loss if the 40% decrease is BEFORE the 55% increase, which is what the article states. Yes, you're math is correct but not for the condition you stated.
