But since its Motorola, the geeks are "meh"

cman: If Microsoft did something like this, there would be calls for Ballmer's head.

Why?

This is a case of Microsoft getting a taste of their own medicine.

Remember, MS recently compelled Motorola to pay them $20 per Android device over a group of patents which they wouldn't disclose. After the settlement Motorola found out what the patents were and went apeshiat. This is definitely a case of 'good for the gander'.

On one hand, I'd like to see the XBox go. It has deliberately catered far too strongly to a sick section of the gaming market, and in so doing it has dragged things down for everybody.

On the other hand: not like this. This is not a legitimate way to do business.

Is this goes through, it could be the breaking point for current tech patent law. It's such a ridiculous cold war-esque situation where patents are figurative nukes and anyone trying to bring up a patent suit is almost guaranteed to face mutually assured destruction, especially in the smartphone sector, and it's all over the most ridiculous bullshiat that shouldn't be allowed to be farking patented.

/On a related note, patent trolling should be punishable by death

A bit late for that don't you think? What are they going to do? Take away the xbox from everyone who already has one? The system is already nearing the end of its lifecycle. I cant imagine hardware sales are that high anymore.

How long til companies stop manufacturing products and just take turns suing each other to stay in business?

So does this mean my Xbox 360s are going to make great collector's pieces in a few years? I mean, I have my original with few (legal) mods (Fan and Case) and my current Slim. It'll be a great conversation piece with my First generation Sega Genesis and Dreamcast.

Fark software patent law. It's not even the fault of the court (or the lawyers hired to argue it), it's the fault of the patents being granted in the first place. Patents for mathematical equations or overly-generic descriptions ("the electronic device has a screen on one side, a camera on the other, and it makes wireless telephone calls") should never be granted.

2012-05-24 11:49:19 AM
Honestly, this isn't as terrible as it would seem... if you remember, Microsoft recently got an ITC decision against Motorola that would stop imports of RAZRs, Droid 4s, Bionics, and others.
Now Motorola has leverage for a cross-license that will allow all of these devices, including the XBox, in.

OniExpress: Patents for mathematical equations or overly-generic descriptions ("the electronic device has a screen on one side, a camera on the other, and it makes wireless telephone calls") should never be granted.

Good thing they're not, then, huh?

No, it's okay, prove me wrong. Find me a patent on a mathematical equation, or one that has claims that broad. I'll wait.

/Claims. Not a broad title, a broad abstract, or some throwaway line in the background, since they're not what the patent covers or is granted on.

2012-05-24 11:51:57 AM
So what happens next in this long-running, complex patent dispute? If the ITC makes the judge's recommendation final, President Barack Obama will then have 60 days to review the decision.

So maybe releasing Halo 4 on election day wasn't so smart AFTER ALL, eh Microsoft?

(b) storage means for storing data on a storage medium;
(c) first means for initializing the storage medium;
(d) second means for processing data regarding assets in the portfolio and each of the funds from a previous day and data regarding increases or decreases in each of the funds, assets and for allocating the percentage share that each fund holds in the portfolio;
(e) third means for processing data regarding daily incremental income, expenses, and net realized gain or loss for the portfolio and for allocating such data among each fund;
(f) fourth means for processing data regarding daily net unrealized gain or loss for the portfolio and for allocating such data among each fund; and
(g) fifth means for processing data regarding aggregate year-end income, expenses, and capital gain or loss for the portfolio and each of the funds.

Clearly not.

The_Six_Fingered_Man: So it's the practical end and not the equation?

No, it's not a mathematical equation because mathematical equations don't include storage mediums and processors, just symbols.

It's patenting an physical application of a mathematical equation, but the original statement was that there are patents on the mathematical equation itself. That's incorrect.

You will still be able to play online games and access online video streaming apps. If you choose to use the time racking up the points with a spot of single-player or story mode, your achievements will be recorded and added to your account once the PSN is restored.

It'd be a crippling loss of revenue on Microsoft to miss a holiday sales season.

Xboxes at $100 or less are likely this year for sale prices, especially with that new subscription model one.

You have to remember, lots of lower-income families don't necessarily afford current-gen consoles until they hit bargain-basement prices.

On top of that, lots of them would be eager to get a Netflix box that can also play DVDs and CDs, which is really the main draw for most non-hardcore people buying consoles.

And thus began the patent wars of the early 21st century, ultimately leading to the fire bombing of the AsiaPanPacificTechnocracy by the AmeriTechConglomerate.

So it was written, so it shall be done. All of the earth was covered by fire in this battle for supremacy. Out of the ashes rose the TechLuddites. Those didn't shun technology, but where able to free it for all persons to use. Removing the false restrictions of copyrights and patent trolls.

I have a friend with an original white 360 from I think 2008 (it has HDMI, so it can't be a launch model). The thing is somehow still alive. It sounds like a jet engine upon startup.

Rip the lid off and air dust the heat sink & fan. PowerPC tends to run hot so you need to push a LOT of air over the HS assembly in the early 360's. So I'd suspect their is a fan check built in to it's POST routine (i.e. ramp up and sustain max rotation for x seconds).

I'm not saying clearing the dust will stop it sounding like a jet engine (they're pretty much old Delta fans and known in the PC modding scene for being LOUD but pushing lots of air) but it may free the fans up slightly so it completes that specific check quicker and throttles them down to sensible levels; it may also reduce the overall noise as without all the fluff it can dump the heat easier and thus not run the fans as hard.
