Well sure. You have to put them through their final pressing. Babies are just like pasta at that point.

I call bullshiat on this! If you feed your kids junk food they will get fat! My wife had a c-section per her doctors orders and our son is not anywhere near fat. We feed him healthy food and no sodas. Some fat kids are more prone to be from a lot of factors not jut how they are born.

All it's saying is that it could be a contributing factor. Not a causal guarantee.

I guess I should have said the way you are born affects a lot of things but not being fat. You get that from what you feed them and some genetic factors. People who believe in natural birth ONLY are trying to scare mothers out of c-sections. It is a low number of women that ask for c-sections and yes maybe they are too lazy to feed their kids right. However, that does not account for all the obesity among emergency c-sections and vaginal births.

all you are doing is delaying the inevitable. your kid is going to be a big fat tub of goo sometime soon, you might as well just relax on the health food and get used to it.

a kid born with a c-section has no reason to live.

they might as well be gay.

or obese.

or overweight (but not a body builder)

Maybe they were too fat to begin with, hence the need for a c section?

The article mentions using BMI to measure the kids. I thought it wasn't supposed to be used to measure children.

My 4-month old c-section twins are around the 10th percentile for their weight. They've got some catching up to if they want to be the big tub-o-goo fatties that they're apparently destined to become

Mothers who delivered by c-section were generally heavier than the others

The generally heavier cohort of mothers gave birth to the generally heavier cohort of children and this is reported as being linked to c-sections? I really hope the actual study accounts for that. Otherwise, these guys went full retard.

2012-05-24 11:06:11 AM
The myth of the I want to stay pretty so I get a c-section is complete horse shiat.

Maybe some 0.01% snobs do it, but the rest of the us who have to rely on insurance and our own money the c-sections that occur are medically necessary.

Or maybe the mom was too lazy/impatient for real birth, therefore too lazy/impatient to feed the spawn proper nutrition.

Actually BMI is probably better when used on children than when applied to adults, pre puberty there isn't a huge stocky vs lanky factor.

On BMI 2 guys the same height and weight are equal regardless of bodyfat % or lean weight. So a guy with a 40 inch chest and a 38 inch waist (ie fat) is exactly the same as a guy with a 46 inch chest and a 32 inch waist

They really seem to be stretching in order to find new excuses as to why people are fat.

I'm morbidly obese because:

[ ] Thyroid!
[ ] Genetics
[ ] I'm in equilibrium with my natural body size
[ ] I was delivered by c-section
[ ] I assume I have a medical condition whereby my body leaches ambient calories from the air

Remember: Nothing is ever your fault. Ever.

I'm curious: did the study differentiate between elective C-sections versus medically necessary C-sections, or did it lump them together?

I ask because while birth is much less of a beautiful process than certain quarters would have us believe, neither would it make a good follow-up to certain shock videos. It's worth looking into this "acquisition of digestive bacteria" hypothesis, because if it did turn out to carry some weight then that would suggest possible ways to counter the problem and perhaps even cure other people with the problem. But I don't think it's likely.

That said, I've often wondered if certain apparently-heritable social problems are memetic in nature rather than genetic: in other words, that subby might actually have a point. Might the mindsets that lead people to choose elective C-sections, or a subset of those mindsets, prove to be obesity risks for their children, heritable because of all the things kids learn from their parents rather than through actual genetics? A study like that would be interesting, but in our current socio-philosophical climate, I'm not sure if people would dare to do such a thing.

Good point. Your single anecdotal observations certainly trumps and "scientific study". Also, no trend has exceptions.

This should be a good popcorn thread.

i bet its more the personality types of the people who choose c-section over regular birth than the c-section itself. they probably have a tendency to be more sloth-like, and feed their kids fast food more instead of cooking healthy meals. plus it is well known that lack of breast feeding(giving soy-based formula instead) will increase the chances of the baby turning out fat.

I enjoyed your post, but I wish to point out that a skin fold test isn't just counting them and/or looking for extra pb&j's or that remote you lost last month. It's pinching a fold of skin from different areas of the body, and measuring the thickness of the pinched skin. If anyone is old enough to remember "Can you pinch an inch?" I was always a pretty thin kid, and I thought the inch they were talking about meant lengthwise, not thinckness wise. Since I didn't have much in the way of belly fat, I could pull the belly skin out way more than an inch. I'm lucky that commercial didn't give me an eating disorder.

Both of my children were born via c-sections. One is a picky eater, tall and skinny, and the other is quite chunky.

Regardless, it's my wife and my job to teach our children about healthy and balanced diets, exercise and lifestyles as they grow. McDonald's is a once or twice a month treat. Desert is something we get about once a week. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables are served every meal. And TV time is limited to one hour a day.

Just based on our builds and that of our family members, One of our daughters is probably going to be the classic tall blond with blue eyes, while our little one will probably be built like an East German swimmer. Mom and I will do our best to make sure both of them have healthy body images no matter what genetic cards they've been dealt.

My mom is an L&D nurse, both of my grandfathers were OB docs and both grandmothers were nurses.

All of this experience culminated on this bit of advice my mom gave me:
Assuming everything is normal, don't go to the hospital until your contractions are regular. Rushing there at the first sign of labor increases your chances of getting a C-section.

Again, there are certainly plenty of cases where a C-section, either planned or emergency, is necessary, but there are many cases where medical intervention causes the need, i.e. confining to bed with pitocin when simply walking around will speed labor.

My theory on C-sections and obesity is that women who have the operation are more likely to formula feed, which I believe (citation needed) is a factor in obesity.

I'd love to actually do a study on that idea.

No worries. It's not common at all. It is more likely that there was an orthopedic problem with that baby pre-birth, which caused the breach presentation, rather than the breach presentation causing a lasting orthopedic problem.

It is life- and brain-saving when there is a problem with breastfeeding. It is good that there is an alternative.
