Magical Mystery Tour: Failure, Fiasco, Or Secret Success?Secret Success

No. Just... no. And I love that album. But no.

Oh hell no subby.

"No More Lonely Nights" has Gilmour kicking ass on lead guitar. For that reason alone....at least buy the soundtrack.

ONLY bad thing? Wrong.

Sim-ply Hav-ing A Wonderful Christmas Time.

There, now it's in your head. Serves you right. Balancing the positive value of the body of his work (Beatles, Wings, solo) against the negative value of this one song - it's a push at best.

Well, I dunno. That song gets a lot of crap but I disagree. It's Christmas for Christ's sake (pun unintentional). Christmastime is happy fun time. And that song is perfect for it. Bouncy melody, easy to sing along with. It's Christmas, enjoy life you depressing fark.

O'RLY, Submitter?

Are you genuinely hot for the groove action of "Temporary Secretary?"

I bought his Wingspan "Greatest Hits" collection when it came out about a decade ago. 75% of it is good or excellent, 25% is unlistenable crap.

2012-05-24 04:06:41 AM
Ahh, avclub, you claim to be too cool for everything but you're actually just garbage. I'd rather read Paul McCartney's ramblings on music film and tv, and he wrote the lyrics to Hello Goodbye

The frog song "we all stand together", was the biggest POS he ever made. How is that not on the list?

TFA is bullshiat. McCartney didn't release anything in the '80s, because it's hard to release material nearly 20 years after your death.

Uh..apparently subby has never had the aural pleasure of the Wings "Wild Life" album. Try it sometime, enjoy the sheer brilliance of a song like "Bip Bop" or "You Are My Singer"!

For about a 2 month span, whenever I'd go into a Kroger store, no matter the location, no matter the time, I'd always hear "No More Lonely Nights" played on their piped-in music. Now, that wouldn't be so peculiar, but at the same time, all the area Walgreens stores had McCartney's "My Brave Face" playing in their piped-in music.

/uninteresting set of coincidences, bro

Good lord, people. Live And Let Die is awesome. 1985, Smile Away and Monkberry Moon Delight are killer tracks. Memory Almost Full, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, and Flaming Pie are all great albums.

And THIS song is middling? Link Seriously?

Or this? Link

To be fair, all four ex-Beatles have put out their share of garbage since going solo.

Lennon-"Sometime In New York City" plus just about anything that has "and Yoko Ono" as the credit.

Harrrison-put out two albums "Dark Horse" and "Extra Texture" recorded while his voice was shot from laryngitis.

Ringo-"Sentimental Journey", "Ringo The 4th"....etc.

McCartney-"Wild Life", singles like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"...

Aside from Band On The Run, I absolutely dislike everything the man has done since leaving the Beatles.

I do, however, enjoy a quite a few tracks from the solo careers of George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Maybe I'm Amazed is a great song. I'm not a huge fan of Pauls music after the Beatles. He's likable though.

I got my hands on Let It Be - The movie... and was amazed to find out that Paul really was the force behind that album too. I heard this documentary is due to be released finally legit in this fall/winter. Many things you assumed about Yoko breaking them up, or nasty fighting, just is not that true

Magical Mystery Tour has some of my favorite songs.

"Daytime Nighttime Suffering" was a great Wings song. Too bad it was only released as a B-side.

Olympus Mons: Maybe I'm Amazed is a great song. I'm not a huge fan of Pauls music after the Beatles. He's likable though

Agree. Paul had some good tunes, no doubt, but I'm not a huge fan. And while I think some Beatles songs are absolutely incredible, on the whole I'm not much of a fan.

Paul McCartney will always remind me of growing up in the mid 1970's and going to summer camp. I had a radio I took along and would listen to WLS from Chicago. They not only played tons of McCartney solo songs like "Band On The Run", "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Let 'em In" continuously, but the Beatles "Got To Get You Into My Life" had been issued as a single and was in heavy rotation as well.

Olympus Mons: I got my hands on Let It Be - The movie... and was amazed to find out that Paul really was the force behind that album too..

John started to check out around Sgt Peppers (some have even interpreted "I'm Only Sleeping" from Revolver as a song about his lack of motivation to do anything with the band). Each successive album has fewer and fewer Lennon songs and by the time Abbey Road came along, it had become Paul's band which didn't sit well with George or Ringo and was the final catalyst for the breakup (Yoko didn't wasn't so much a cause as she was a symptom of what led to the split)

Meh, this moviewas and is truly awful (as is MMT), but it's just a classic misstep in the name of vanity that many, many respectable rockstars have been guilty of over the years.

For the record, I still find Paul's solo output to be not only underrated, but overall better than that of his bandmates. You have terrific early records like Band on the Run, RAM, and Venus & Mars, and his recent solo output hasn't been half-bad either. Chaos and Creation from 2005 stands as some of his best solo work IMO. And he's still rocking live too - saw him here in Nashville in 2010 where he played almost 40 songs in a near 3 hour show. Dude is, what, 70? I am 33 and I could not maintain that stamina.

2012-05-24 09:52:19 AM
The most underrated Wings song you've never heard is "Don't Let it Bring You Down" off London Town. I'd link it if I wasn't on mobile at the moment. Also, see Electric Arguments. Damn fine album.

I love The Beatles, grew up listening to them, have all of their albums including the Anthologies, BBC Sessions, Love (which is awesome, by the way), etc. and I hate everything I've heard from Wings (the band, not the show, Antonio Scarpacci ftw). I've really enjoyed McCartney's more recent albums though, within the last 10 or so years. I've also enjoyed the album with My Brave Face, I forget what it's called. The rest of his solo stuff I pretty much hate as well, except Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time which succeeds in being a nice, upbeat, catchy, warm song.

McCartney has suffered from a bit of the same problem George Lucas has: there's nobody to tell him, "No, that idea is crap."

Still, he is arguably the best songwriter of all time. The Beatles' filler songs are comparable to most bands' greatest hits. Hell, even songs everyone knows and considers among the Beatles' greatest hits weren't actual hits - because they weren't even released as singles.
