You're not very bright are you?

Yawn.

NobleHam: Portman is the VP choice for someone who doesn't want to make a VP choice. He's so bland, quiet and mild that he will draw absolutely no attention, either positive or negative. He's a walking "meh." The only better choice Romney could make would be to pick someone from the Neutral Planet.

Exactly.

MItt needs someone even more whitebread and boring than himself, who won't overshadow his campaign or make any waves. It won't be anyone "ethnic", female, controversial, or non-Christian.

One of the qualities that might make him most valuable to Romney - who many political observers think needs a Latino on the ticket to neutralize the president's edge with that group - is Portman's fluency in Spanish

Okay but wont speaking Spanish hurts them with the people who want English as the official language of the US?

It gives Teabaggers a pat on the back type-feeling, for being so tolerant and inclusive as to put up with a white guy who can talk to the wetbacks in their own strange language.

Also, the GOP is utterly confused - as usual - if they think Rubio will help them carry Hispanics in the Southwest & California. I know all they all look the same to Republicans, but the wealthy Floridian son of long-ago Cuban immigrants has about as much in common with Southwestern/Californian Hispanics as someone currently living in Spain - the language, and little else.

As opposed to putting a Puerto Rican who grew up working class to the Supreme Court...

Carry CA and the SW? How about carry FL? Cubans in FL generally see themselves as Southern plantation owners and other Hispanics as field slaves. Rubio as VP would be virtually ceding every Hispanic vote outside Dade to Obama (and quite a few inside Dade)

I'm still waiting for some coked-up studio exec to bulldoze a project through that's just a cleaned-up version of Tokyo Godfathers, re-tooled to sell toys. (Hana is an inexplicably beautiful woman, Gin has an adorable robot dog for a sidekick, everybody gets their old lives back at the end, etc. etc.)

In the meantime, I suspect they'll just keep repackaging material from old Scrooge McDuck comics and hoping no one will notice. Just like they did for...INCEPTION.

the opposite of charity is justice: Romney's campaign is feeling increasingly comfortable with the idea they can win FL without wasting a VP pick to do so, Quinnipiac has a poll out today with Romney being up 6 points in the state. Now I personally suspect that poll is a bit of an outlier but that number will be in everyone's head until an other poll unseats it.

Leaving the slot to hopefully pick up a swing state like OH. Its the best choice of the bunch of the bunch at 18 electoral votes, NC is going to swing back red, VA is only 13 and could be swayed with ads, and PA is definitely staying blue. Obama is only ahead in OH by 5 points or so, its the most realistic and vote-worthy state to use the VP choice.

Except a poll of Ohioans of a Rmoney/Portman ticket didn't change Rmoney's numbers here. It won't give him a bump in this swing state since Portman is just another useless GOP toolbag.

Problem is that VP candidates from swing states do almost nothing to help win their home state. There was a pretty good article I read a while back looking at every VP candidate since JFK (which is basically when "regional balance" became useless as a strategy), and not only did the author show that VP choice has little to no effect on voting patterns, VP candidates who were picked for regional balance or from swing states did the worst of all.

I was somewhat dismissive of the Quinnipiac poll earlier and I'll continue so here. Honestly I don't know much about this Portman fellow but unless he is a strongly polarizing figure like Palin I'm having a hard time imagining a native son not giving Romney a few points boost in Ohio when/if the electorate has had more of a chance to see him on the ticket. IMO its premature to take polls on that question with any seriousness.

Notabunny: Mitt Romney wants Dick Cheney as his VP

Last weekend I was watching C-Cpan and I saw Vice President Dick Cheney. And he was being asked questions about a whole host of issues following 9/11, the affairs in various countries in the world. And I listened to him speak, and I said, "Whether you agree with him or disagree with him, this is a man of wisdom and judgement, and he could have been President of the United States." That's the kind of person I'd like to have. A person of wisdom and judgement.

Romney did not appear to be making a joke
