If not having brown apples is that important to you, you could just squirt a little lemon juice onto the damn apple, you know.

This isn't for end consumers, but farmers and producers.

I'd eat it, but I know a lot that won't even though this is a relatively benign modification, and isn't insertion of foreign DNA but silencing.

I'd love to know if it affects the nutrition profile at all though, as well as how badly it farks with the taste of hard apple cider if used that way.

//Thanks for the TF btw.

Can't wait for all the hippies complaining that this fruit is an abomination and that it will kill anyone who eats it (in 70 years).

I'm just glad apples don't go black. We'd never see them again! :-|

The corporation has a patent on the gene. This won't end well.

If you read their FAQ, they are in fact inserting a foreign gene - nptII (neomycin phosphotransferase II) - an antibiotic resistance gene that has no worldly business in an apple tree - to assist in determining whether the change has propagated. So there is that. It is indeed a Modern Prometheus.

I got some bananas in the freezer that are browner than a turd. But they still taste like fresh ripe bananas on a hot day.

He said the benefits of an all-white, all-the-time apple are sure to outweigh the concerns of the public about genetically modified fruit.

Benefits don't mean shiat to me when the food I am eating could cause sterility among other maladies. Maybe not now, but the cumulative effect literature just isn't there. Monsanto's evil may not apply to all companies, but the things I hear about M's products and their involvement with other countries seriously taint the entire lot . Guilty until proven innocent, I say.

/test the shiat thoroughly, yes with humans, before feeding it to us

Maybe they could grow some that last, transport well, and TASTE GOOD. I haven't had a good apple since I left Pennsylvania. Freakin' things were better than candy there. Here in Tennessee, I might as well eat the tree it grew on. Tastes like wood.

/Red Delicious are horrible, horrible apples. I wouldn't buy there anywhere.

FTFA: "Apples that won't go brown could be could be planted in Canada as early as 2014."

You can't cultivate food apples by planting them.

Says you... This could also mean increasing the antioxidant properties of the apple. This could be life-extending appleness. An apple a day could keep cancer away.

Support your local growers and this isn't necessary.

If you want to be eating apples that spent weeks being shipped and sitting in a store, then by all means this is the advancement you

Hey, you know how NASA spent all that time and money developing a pen that could write in space? Do you remember what the Russians did? They used a pencil.

Hey, you know how Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. spent all that time and money developing a GM apple that wouldn't turn brown? Do you remember what intelligent people did? They irradiate apples.

As a Canadian I can attest that we have bigger problems than our apples browning if left to do so

We are lost

Honest Bender: Hey, you know how NASA spent all that time and money developing a pen that could write in space? Do you remember what the Russians did? They used a pencil.

I don't remember that, because it never happened. Fisher developed the space pen entirely on their own, without anyone asking them, and then presented it to NASA, who recognized the value and immediately ordered some after testing because using pencils in space sucked. Nobody wants to be inhaling graphite, or to have it floating around and possibly working its way into the delicate, life sustaining electronics in their spaceship. The Russians pretty much adopted them right away too, as soon as Fisher started selling them.

In our yard is an apple tree that produces red apples. They don't turn brown. Bit bitter, but good for pies and apple sauce.

As far as I know, Apples never go brown -- every time I've ordered a machine from Apple, it's shipped FedEx.
