Yeah. How utterly unreasonable for me to post a pony gif in response to someone who was trolling bronies in a thread where Pinkie Pie is in the headline's title.

Someone stop me before I shoehorn again!

FTA:

"The episode also explains why Google to date has awarded more than $500,000 to hackers who privately report vulnerabilities in its software and services. Sometimes, the only way to erect an impenetrable castle is to occasionally watch it come crashing down."

I absolutely love this approach. What a great way to give incentive to people to break down your vulnerabilities and then report them instead of exploiting them. Stark contrast to the Microsoft approach of essentially trying to sweep them under the rug.

Microsoft's approach awards prizes for help making vulnerabilities more difficult to exploit.... which is basically akin to slapping another bandage on an enormous gaping wound. They want "security innovations" that they can control, not fixes to serious problems.

Well, at least Microsoft seems to be better than Apple, who hopes its reality distortion field is enough to prevent any security hole.

I'm confused to how this is any different than what MS has been doing for some time (Offering bounties for discovery and private disclosure of security holes, with the severity determining the cash award)

Because it's not Microsoft. Ergo it's not evil

Or anyone. You think George RR Martin was the first person in history cook up the idea of a rich man offering cash rewards to a locksmith who could beat his security?

It's standard operating procedure that when you want to test security you let other people try to break it and then pay them to tell you how they did it.

I don't know where you get your info, but Microsoft does not offer bug bounties. Right now their policy is "coordinated disclosure." Vulnerabilities sell for a pretty hefty premium on the open market, so obviously this isn't very effective.

The general thought is that Microsoft products have so many vulnerabilities that it would be cost prohibitive to offer bounties for them (at least at a level that could compete with the open market). As an alternative they have had a "security contest," which aims at making new "security technologies." As I said, this doesn't fix the open wounds.... rather it's more like trying to place the whole system in a giant plastic bubble so no infections get through.
