A military commander frontrunner in a military-controlled country? Shocking.

I predict he'll win with ~105% of the vote.

Don't blame me, I voted for Ramses II.

No, we don't. Just because we let people make decisions for themselves it doesn't mean we can't be upset or annoyed if they make the wrong one. And just because they made that decision democratically doesn't make it right or give it some aura of rightfulness. There is only right or wrong paths in the world, the one that leads towards a theocratic and barbarian totalitarian state is a wrong path, regardless of how they got there.

The real trick will be to get this first Egyptian democratic government to hold fair elections again in 2016 or whatever. Either way, I think that the Egyptian citizens will put enough sandals on Tahir square to keep the government from going full-retard.

Even while I worry that the army in Egypt is already too powerful, I find myself envious that there are four candidates on the ballot for president in Egypt.

No way, democracy is only good if they pick who we want. Even better if we force it on people at the end of a gun and give cover to our preferred candidate.

Not much we can do, other than cut off aid. Once Mubarak fell, the Muslim Brotherhood was the only opposition group that had any semblance of organization.

The Arab Spring was nice in theory, but you can't have democracy without the bedrock of civil society. Mubarak destroyed civil society in Egypt, and the most organized groups were going to fill in the inevitable power vacuum.

It sucks, I really wanted to see the Valley of the Kings - now, I'm guessing in a few years the Saladis will take over and start torching museums and tearing down temples. The Egyptian Museum only narrowly survived before - if the Salafists take power who knows what will happen.

I'd say we base policy on the what the government does after they've been elected, but then why would I waste my breath.
