Well, it is the Navy, after all. So Harvey might have approved on the grounds of the fabulousness that is our maritime military forces.

Hey sailor. Call me.

I didn't even know that the San Francisco city council had anything to do with naming Navy ships.

Huh.

You learn something new every day.

Wait. Maybe I just don't understand proper ouija boad operating procedures, but aren't you supposed to consult one *with* another person (or 2 or 3)? So that the entire game is basically a subtle pushing war? What the hell's the point of doing it by yourself?

Eh, it's a non-binding resolution.

I just passed a unanimous (1 Aye, 0 Nays) non-binding resolution that Scarlett Johansson has to come over to my house and put Alison Brie over her lap and spank her ass fire engine red.

Having other people involved tends to interfere with getting the answer you want.

Here's an easy way to tell if you are able to make contact with the spirits of dead people:

1) You are not able to make contact with the spirits of dead people.
2) See 1.

"Pushing it yourself" is all that many have left.

It's too bad we have gay ships now. They will never be as effective as regular heterosexual ships, since they can't sail straight.

I didn't know Harvey Milk, but knowing his history, I don't think he would have liked having a warship named after him. He probably would, however, approve of Harvey Milk High School in NYC.

That ship would go down without much of a struggle.

I didn't know you can contact the dead - and be specific about who you can contact - with a ouija board.

Blows my tiny, little mind.

Gotta love city councils. A few years ago, our equivalent geniuses here in L.A. spent a couple of day crafting and voting up a resolution declaring los Angeles a "racism free zone".
Some local wag (Al Martinez of The Times, I think) suggested that while they were at it they should have gone the whole hog and declared it pollution-free, crime-free, and traffic-free as well.

2012-05-23 03:14:51 PM
Don't you think we could find some pro war or atleast more macho guys to name a Navy ship after. We don't have the USS Chuck Norris yet. That ship would kick a$$.

I enjoy San Francisco, but the fact this even came up as a topic at a city council meeting explains a lot.

Berkeley banned nuclear weapons within its city limits.

I find this difficult to believe, but a coworker of mine (a currently inactive Marine) who did rotations in who-knows-where Middle East tells me that the Marines seem to have more buggers than even the Navy. He once told us that they had to bar everyone from the showers for like 6 days because so much back door action was taking place in the showers.

It's easy to think the Navy would have the higher concentration of these activities due to the prison effect of being on a damn ship but remember those other armed services out in the remote camps or even on base are still in some ways isolated from the other gender.

Maybe the coworker is BSing us, but that doesn't really fit into his stoic nature. Who knows.

/and really, who cares

I get that he was a naval officer.

I'm totally cool with the Navy naming ships after former naval personnel who were awesome.

And Harvey Milk was awesome.

But he was awesomest after he left the navy.

I'd be cool with naming a building after the guy. Or endowing a graduate fellowship at a public policy institute at some university. Hell, I'll even contribute - give me the form, here's my $10.

But if the navy wants to commemorate the ending of DADT, it seems to me they oughtta name a ship after somebody who was gay and whose awesomeness is related to their military career. There's gotta be a homosexual CMOH winner or something.

Harvey Milk was a Korean war vet & just because he opposed one war doesn't mean he opposed all war.

As a San Franciscan, I'm gonna let everyone know that it's shiat like this that drives us to refer to them as the Board of Stupidvisers. Between this, the constant juvenile bickering, and the attempts to ban the Blue Angels, I would say we all pretty much hate them in some capacity or another.

I have no idea if it's real or at Arlington, but there's a photo floating around FB of a headstone that reads "Vietnam Veteran: They gave me a medal for killing two men, and a discharge for loving one".

Name it after Leonard Matlovich (d. 1988). He outed himself to the USAF in 1975 and was discharged for it.

Genju: Maybe the coworker is BSing us, but that doesn't really fit into his stoic nature. Who knows.

Back during DADT there was a piece in one of the US Army journals about the costs of DADT and how kicking people out reduced the combat effectiveness of units.

For the Army at least, they had more DADT violations in special forces, intelligence and language units. And generally the Army was trying to brush them under the rug so they wouldn't have to kick those people out.

So combat Marine units, I could see them drawing from the same demographics as Army and having DADT problems.

It's dumb. He should have prayed about it instead.

"Warship" is vague when it comes to reporting. Some of these knuckleheads think anything with a hull in Navy service is a "warship."

Hospital or supply ship I could see. Not a Ticonderoga missile cruiser.

If the Navy names a garbage scowl after George W. Bush does that mean he can never have an aircraft carrier named after him?

That would just eat at his craw.

"Hey, Junior. Just let you know, my aircraft carrier got deployed to the gulf and ah nailed yer momma. Mission accomplished. Ah see yer ship is picking up garbage in the Pacific. That's some nobelness there, George."

2012-05-23 03:31:57 PM
You know, I don't have an opinion on Harvey himself, I know very little about him.

But seriously, the USS Harvey Milk just doesn't have much of a military ring to it.

It does sound fabulous though.

They're not moving to San Jose, They're moving to Santa Clara where their offices and training facilities have been for 40 years and San Francisco doesn't have a city council it only has a county board of supervisors

Yeah, there's a class of ship that has a specific naming convention of being named after explorers and pioneers, including civil rights activists. There's ships named after Caesar Chavez and Medgar Evers.

Every Navy ship has a motto, "Bravery in the face of danger" or "In harm's way" or something like that. I'd love to see the motto for the USS Harvey Milk.

Back in my day, we didn't have internets. when we wanted to troll somebody, we used a Ouija board to tell them that their dead grandmother wants them to stop jerking off so much.

The navy takes in recommendations for the names of ships. Most times, it's political (and the reason so many ships are named after congressmen), but they will consider requests from almost anyone. Do ya know anybody in BuShips (or whatever it's called nowadays), you could possibly get yer name on a US Navy garbage scow.

We need to find someone assigned to the pentagon, in the office of naming ships. USS Fark does have a certain ring to it.

It just hit me...would the USS Harvey Milk eventually get nick-named "The Twinkie"?

/I'll giver them a letter, maybe we'll get lucky

I certainly hope that the population of 'frisco will never again heve to depend on the military to
save them from a fire
house them
feed them
treat them

as for chaneling the dead..didn't John Edwards speak for a dead, mute girl during his closing arguments when he was a lawyer?
