Ferrara Pan is still around? I just assumed they'd folded with my childhood.

Bring back Alexander The Grape, Mr. Melon, and Johnny Apple Treats --Grape head, Melon head and Cherry head are lame. Find another name for Cherry Clan, because, well THAT'S RACIST!

swahnhennessy: Ferrara Pan is still around? I just assumed they'd folded with my childhood.

Their factory is en route to/from downtown Chicago to/from my in-laws' house. I've passed it countless times, and it's still very much in operation. My father-in-law usually bikes down to the factory near Christmas to get stocking-stuffers of factory-fresh *.heads candies, and you are now insanely jealous.

/My in-laws are awesome.

Yup, in Forest Park, right next to the Harlem Avenue L station on the Blue Line and the Eisenhower Expressway.

Meanwhile, Mars has a candy factory on the far west edge of the city on Oak Park Avenue, across the Metra tracks (Mars Station, on the Milwaukee West line) from the Shriners Hospital for Children.

I'm still bummed out that I can't get British Blackpool Rock in Canada now, because they use some dye in the pink coating that turns people into Scotsmen or something.

I LOVE driving by the Ferrara company, they make the best retro candy. Except nobody told them it's retro!

Ferrara Jawbusters are $9.00 for 250 at the online company store

Dunno if those are different from jawbreakers

I used to live a few blocks away (and across 290) from the Ferrara Pan factory - when the wind blew from that direction it would smell like grape or apple. Pretty nice, but driving past the Turano building in Berwyn is the best.

/surprised at no Charles Barkley jokes from the headline

I went to gradeschool at St Bernadine's, right across the street from Ferrara Pan. There is no greater torture to inflict on a 7-year-old than to build a school across from a candy factory, and leave the windows open during the day.

Farleys trots out the best candy corn in the world. At least 10 or my pounds can be directly attributed to Farleys candy corn.
