Self-hatred? I wonder if the author thinks that all the white people who go for the tan look are also full of self-hatred? Since this is from Australia, somehow I doubt it.

A jillion and a half studies have shown lighter skin is generally more attractive to men (on average -all other factors being equal). Even among black couples worldwide, black men prefer black women who have lighter skin. It's just human psychology. It's like complaining that men are attracted to women with nice legs and perky boobs. Get over it, and stop trying to be so racist and nationalistic. Sorry, loser.

Confused Author: "If some African Americans used to have low esteem and tried to lighten their skin and straighten their hair, at least you knew that a history of slavery must have cast a shadow on their confidence."

Why do you act like slavery never existed anywhere except the U.S.? Hate to break it to you dude, but India has about 2 THOUSAND years more history of slavery than the U.S. And it continues to this day according to international rights watch groups. If you are concerned about slavery, write about your own shiathole country.

Crudbucket: Little.Alex: As a guy who lives in Asia, allow me to say; it's not just India. It's China, Korea, Japan too. Darker skin is seen as undesirable for 2 reasons:

A. Often their skin gets gradually darker with age. So white skin is seen as youthful and healthy.

(2) Filipinos and other South Pacific types are dark, and they are viewed as Children of a Lesser God because of their poverty and generally low education.

[www.dealspot.ph image 493x300]

/ and most women don't need much encouragement to be self hating.

I noticed and was amused by this the first time I went to a country with a large Indian/Asian population. White people spend money on tanning or dyeing themselves orange and all around the rest of the world people are bleaching themselves whiter.

Having dated a woman from Southeast Asia who would freak out every time she perceived her skin got the tiniest bit darker from being outside (and yet she would always forget to use sunscreen), I know exactly what you are talking about.

On the other hand, putting up with her craziness was a lot better than not getting laid, as it turns out.

Little.Alex: As a guy who lives in Asia, allow me to say; it's not just India. It's China, Korea, Japan too.

When I lived in Korea the fascination was with having "occidental" or "non-Asian" eyes, which means surgically altering the eyelids. I heard several urban legends about those surgeries going badly wrong.

'Beauty means having big eyes, a pale complexion, a sharp and pointed nose, a taller height, and a small chin and mouth. Essentially, South Korean beauty meant looking as "white" or Caucasian as possible,' one Korean-American wrote.

Ishkur: In India, it's due to the 2500 year old ancient caste system. Brahmans and other noble castes came from the wealthier, more powerful northern provinces where skin pigmentation was decidedly lighter. So it was seen as a status symbol -- that you were from correct parentage -- to have light skin. The Untouchables and other bottom castes typically came from the poorer south, and they were all darker skinned. People from Sri Lanka are practically black.

Baroque Europe experienced something similar: Having a tan meant you worked outside, which meant you were a commoner, and so the upper classes gradually moved to fairer and fairer complexions in order to distance themselves from the great unwashed masses, and before long they're caking layers of powder onto their faces to become ghostly white.

This has come up in Fark threads before. In another Fark thread about skin tone, I posted a link to the song Gore Gore Mukhde Pe Kala Kala Chasma from the 1994 Indian movie Suhaag. The title of the song, "Gore Gore Mukhde Pe Kala Kala Chasma," means "Very Dark Sunglasses on a Fair White Face."

It's also somewhat common on the Indian subcontinent for women to use parasols to block out the sun. Later in the same video you'll see women using a parasol to keep the sun off their skin.

AverageAmericanGuy: Vagina lightening cream isn't as necessary as areola pinkening cream.

Well, since the latter is completely unnecessary (and undesireable, IMHO), are you saying the former is very completely unnecessary?

2012-05-23 11:33:20 AM
The problem with saying all men prefer light skin is that this is arrived at over thousands of years of lighter skinned imperialists subjugating civilizations around the globe. The idea of lusting after power held in the skins of light people probably became entrenched.

Additionally, the phrase "Black is beautiful"--not "Negro is beautiful"--probably reversed centuries of self-hate in women with dark skin.

I'm not saying there is no preference for light skin but if there is, much of it might be attributed to generation after generation of power in a few forcing the adoption of their traits as attractive.

Fallout Boy: Remember, guys. Getting tanned if you are white is fine but getting pale if you are brown is "distasteful".

False equivalence. On the one had, yes, this does in part spring from a universal desire to be different, a "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" attitude. People who naturally have very light skin want to have darker skin, while people who naturally have very dark skin envy lighter tones. On THIS level, you have a point.

On a completely different level, however, there are also echos of racism or caste-ism when an African American or a dark-skinned Indian wishes they had lighter skin, and these echos of bigotry are simply not present when someone from the Jersey Shore visits a tanning salon. On THIS level, you speak as one clueless at best.

omeganuepsilon: There is something to the theory behind the product. Almost all people want to look appealing, be it getting a tan, styling or dying hair, to wearing make up, to dressing nice, or landscaping the down below. Why are some of these perfectly find but others not?

What is it with that part of society that thinks everyone should expressly not want to look their best for the consideration of others or their own peace of mind?

We get pissed at or shun people who don't shower, who have horrible breath, yellowed teeth, moles sprouting hairs that are 5 times as thick and long as a typical hair...some of these people we avoid like the plague. We can't help it, some of these things are physically disturbing to the people who have to witness them first hand. It's not a conscious choice, it's just "ick", and cannot be controlled. Sure, we don't outright tell people to go fix themselves, but we can't help our reaction to the stimuli.

But a guy who likes a smooth or trimmed pelvic area is somehow evil and misogynistic?(and a pedo if fark threads are to be believed).

A woman that looks at herself in the mirror and doesn't like a bit of darker skin that in comparison looks dingy or dirty is suddenly a victim? Where's the crusade against a mole removal, or hair dye/styling?

Accept people for who they are? Sure.
Doesn't mean people should not try to look their best, or improve an area or three for their own self confidence, or as a gift for a lover.

The problem isn't really about one person making this choice for themselves. It's about the expectation that people need to change themselves in order to conform to some ridiculous notion of beauty. Waxing is a perfect example. Look at most movies prior to the 90's that showed female nudity, women had hair there. Then the whole waxing fad started and all of a sudden there's this expectation that if you're a woman who doesn't wax you're a hideous beast. While that is an exaggeration, it's certainly an attitude that's taken quite often by many men, especially on fark. The point is that waxing is now considered "the norm" for women.

Waxing is only one example and it is more of an inconvenience than something as extreme as skin bleaching. The thing that I think people get upset about with products such as this is that now we're creating a new expectation that could take off and unlike waxing, this is actually potentially dangerous. I don't think there's ever a good reason to put permanently altering chemicals on your skin in the name of vanity. Although I highly doubt this will become as mainstream as waxing due to it's extremity, it's the idea that women should be worried about something so trivial that upsets people.

Then again look at botox. Look at how botox took off. Look at all of those beautiful women who are ruining their faces with that crap. Now there's this expectation that all women should be doing this (it mostly comes from other women of course). It started out as just the old ones and now it's women in their 20's and supposedly even teens. That's just sick. Imagine in 20 years how many women in Hollywood will just be puffy faced freaks with permanent fish lips who can't show an emotion and it will just be normal by that point.

Then there's the whole race thing that everyone else has already covered in depth.

People should be able to do what they want to their own bodies as long as they don't expect others to have to do the same thing.

PillsHere: The problem isn't really about one person making this choice for themselves. It's about the expectation that people need to change themselves in order to conform to some ridiculous notion of beauty. Waxing is a perfect example......The point is that waxing is now considered "the norm" for women.

The concept that it's societies fault is what is ridiculous, as is thinking that is what society really thinks. There are plenty of people that simply don't give a fark, but think there should be a bare minimum of grooming done(a washing, a trim, maybe some styling or scenting, but that's it really).

There is a distinction that must be made. There is no vast expectation that women should be waxed. However, there are a lot of people that prefer the wax job, or the trim bush, or even/smooth skin tones. Some people think everyone should be tan, but the rest of society laughs these people off as whack jobs. Sure, there are some real assholes out there, but in reality people that bad off are few and far between, and if they're not rare in the local area, a change of venue might be a smart decision.

A matter of personal preference, even if it's the majority view, does not equate to a belief that people should be that way as if it's some moral obligation. Now, it's a smart move of you want to appeal to people with that preference, but is not, by necessity of popular vote, mandated.

The fact that people make that jump in logic is demonstrative of only one thing. That person's zealotry/outrage(and the insecurities as well, ie paranoia). There is no conspiracy, no real demand. Sure, most ads will attempt to makes sales due to that insecurity, but that's what all ads are, really. Exploitation of people's emotions, be it desires, status, or insecurities. What are we to do, bugger all advertising? Outlaw it completely? Enforce morals on how a company advertise a product? Who's morals?

Instead of going on a tirade about how evil society is, it may be more beneficial to see what can be done about alleviating some of the actual problem, the insecurities that people are prone to.

Why do I blame the insecurities? Most of us don't buy into whatever ad companies are trying to project, not in any meaningful way. Is skin color of the scrotum or labia really going to turn any reasonable people away? No. A person stupid enough to buy into that, as representative of society, deserves to hand over their money.

media.tumblr.com

Fact is, the whole movement of "be who you are" has it's zealot extremists(and the article writer is one of them). People that think no one should ever shave, trim, or wash, to please another human being, ever. They are just as bad, shallow and judgmental as the other assholes that are shallow and judgmental. Slut shaming the girl who likes to pretty herself up or modify her looks in any given way for her pleasure and others, they see her as weak and try to brow beat her into their schema of how people should be.
