His own grandmother? Gross.

2012-05-22 08:25:39 PM
Michael Hoffman said that regardless of his son's behavior, the teen was unarmed and didn't deserve to be shot to death.

Regardless of his behavior? A 17 year old is big and strapping compared to a 74 year old and they can get massively violent.

Knowing only the circumstances that the kids was at an "alternative" (read: correctional) high school and 17 while his grandmother's 74 and (possibly) allowed to legally own a gun, I'm gonna side with her. You don't kill your own grand kids unless something is massively wrong with them or you, and it's rare someone with that much wrongness can live free for 74 years.

She's not guilty.

When someone gets shot: aren't you supposed to show pictures of him 7 or 8 years younger?

But he wasn't black! Second-degree murder, at least.

The grandmother's attorney claimed that Hoffman was on drugs and that his client was not responsible for her actions, saying: 'She didn't have a choice - she was afraid.'

Expect a lot more of this if you stupid libs get pot legalized.

Or, since it was his grandma, Werthers Originals.

I can perfectly well understand the necessity of shooting a drug-addled teen but this doesn't add up--how in the world was she threatened while he was calling 911??

What was he doing, calling the cops for help while advancing on her???

2012-05-22 09:47:21 PM
was expecting meth addled grandchild and the gran'ma to be sort of justified. seems she is just batshiat.

The 17 year old in question was, according to reports, a repeat drug offender, was put on probation for drug use the week before, and attacked his grandmother while high on K2, the hot new "synthetic pot".

The only thing that gives me pause is that she didn't call the police. The kid did as he was dying. And then Grandma shot him up some more.

If you had RTFA, you would have seen the part where after having been shot by the grandmother about 4 times, there was a pause where the teen had enough time to call 911 and tell them she was trying to kill him, before she shot him another 4 times. I am guessing that she shot him and left him for dead, and then when she came back and discovered that he was still alive and had called 911, that she finished him off. I don't know for sure that is what happened, but the fact that there was a pause between the first shots and the last shots means that any sort of "panic" reaction was gone, and she just wanted to make sure he was dead.

2012-05-22 09:50:30 PM
Maybe the first shot was justified but I'm pretty sure that the ones that came later, while the kid was on the phone with 911, probably weren't.

2012-05-22 09:50:32 PM
Did she have a permit for that gun? Was she trained to empty your gun into whomever you're shooting?

If so, she did the right thing. Otherwise, Susan Sarandon is gonna go to jail...

Came for the South Park, leaving satisfied.

2012-05-22 09:52:44 PM
He was so wild and crazy and dangerous that he was able to dial 911 for help.

People on drugs can totally think straight like that.

Hoffman had been attending an alternative high school in nearby Farmington and living with his maternal grandparents so he could complete his senior year while his divorced parents settled in Arizona, according to his father, Michael Hoffman of Scottsdale, Arizona.

I just knew Arizona had to be involved somehow.

2012-05-22 09:54:32 PM
By the way, he had been on the phone with 911 for approximately 3 minutes when he was shot again. There were also several other shots fired as officers were arriving on the scene. The 911 tape is supposed to be released soon.

2012-05-22 09:55:56 PM
Did I read this wrong, or did she use two different guns?

2012-05-22 09:56:50 PM
What, the cops didn't just say "good job" and let her sleep in her own bed that night?

Wtf. DETROIT SUBURBS is not a city. I'm. Guessing Bham since it was casually dropped in there.

2012-05-22 09:57:31 PM

doglover: I'm gonna side with her.

What a surprise, you siding with the shooter.

Anyway, this bit seems the most telling to me:

The police tape was played so that the court could hear Jonathon Hoffman frantically tell a 911 dispatcher he had been shot in the chest by his grandmother Sandra Layne and was going to die.

By the time officers arrived at the family's upscale condo in a Detroit suburb, at least four more shots from a .40-caliber handgun had been pumped into the high school senior.

So she shot him four times in the chest, he goes off to make a 911 call, then she shoots him again, four more times. Possibly the first four shots were justified, we don't know. But it seems INCREDIBLY unlikely that the last four were.

I suspect the reasoning behind those last four shots was "Oh fark, it looks like he's gonna live. Better kill him so the court only hears my version of events".

2012-05-22 09:57:32 PM
Sounds like a scared old biddy who bought into all the propaganda the state pushes about how drugs instantly turn you into a murdering rapist, and freaked out when the kid came home acting stoned.

Sheesh.

And that's what will get her. Even if the first shots were completely justified, once the threat is down and neutralized you have to stop. Pumping more rounds into a neutralized threat is murder.

THIS. One shot = self defense. Emptying your magazine into someone who is already lying on the ground, wounded, while the police are en route = murder.

1. That is assuming that the kid did something to not just provoke the shooting but to justify it, and so far the only evidence for that is essentially that he was a generically unruly teenager.

2. She was probably not trained to shoot someone, get back to him as he is on the phone explaining to 911 that he is dying from gunshot wounds, and shoot him some more. Even if she was, following that advice isn't the right or legal thing to do.

/not sure if serious

Some of you people must be absolutely, pants-shiattingly terrified of teenagers.

You have to be kidding. That shiat was outlawed in a bunch of cities in the DFW area two years ago.

If the shots are on the 911 tape, that crazy farking biatch is going to jail. It's too bad she's so old -- she won't have to stay in there long.

Come on. Do you really think in a legitimate 911 recording you could hear the shell casings hitting the floor?

Cthulhu_is_my_homeboy: Sounds like a scared old biddy who bought into all the propaganda the state pushes about how drugs instantly turn you into a murdering rapist, and freaked out when the kid came home acting stoned.

That's exactly why she purchased the gun according to a story I saw on the local news. There was a case around here a while back where a kid got high on K2 (so called synthetic marijuana) and beat his parents and brother with a baseball bat, killing his dad and severely injuring his mom and brother. She was scared that something similar would happen to her.

2012-05-22 10:05:42 PM

Monkeyfark Ridiculous: and so far the only evidence for that is essentially that he was a generically unruly teenager.

"Police had responded in March, two months before the fatal shooting, to a domestic disturbance at Layne's home.

'I spoke to the officer who responded, and he indicated this young man was totally out of control in the street,' defense attorney Mr Ribitwer told reporters Monday.

'He was derogatory to his grandmother. He was yelling and shouting and almost got into it with the police."

Yeah, no jury on earth will buy her version of events as anything remotely resembling self-defense. She's a cold-blooded murderer.

And to think, I was disappointed that my own aged grandmother sent me a Christmas card every year with $5 tucked in it even when I was in my late 20's. THAT shiat WAS CUTE WHEN I WAS FIVE, GRANDMA, BUT IT DOESN"T PAY THE BILLS ANYMORE!

Just kidding, I thought it was adorable because it meant she thought I was her cute little grandson. (RIP, grandma.) Likewise, based on the pictures alone, the dead kid in this story looks like a goofy, rather enjoyable sort of fellow. I wish he got $5 bills from his grandma, and not bullet holes in the chest, followed up by 'finishing shots' while he was on the phone with 911. It's a horrific story and I told my own grandma story to make myself feel better. Will someone please hold me?
