Organic is losing it's meaning as the US does not have the tighter definions of what 'organic' means.

If you take the extra effort to buy fruit and vegetables instead of a factory made TV dinner, is doubling the cost for organic worth it?

Telling their dumb ass that the food they're eating comes from GM seeds, that typically shuts them right down.

This is actually probably quite true. Non-murdered meat would mean meat that died of non-murder causes. This would include things like natural causes due to age and disease or an accident of some kind.

Old age meat is almost certainly extremely tough. I'm not sure I'd even consider eating diseased meat and meat dead from some kind of an accident is likely road-kill. While this last one technically could be young and tender, the chances of finding one before it began to get skanky is pretty unlikely.

So yea, murder does make meat taste better.

After digging through a pundits link to an editorials link to the actual study, heres an segment from the abstract: "After viewing a few organic foods, comfort foods, or control foods, participants who were exposed to organic foods volunteered significantly less time to help a needy stranger, and they judged moral transgressions significantly harsher than those who viewed nonorganic foods."

Seeing organic foods? Not 'eating healthy organic'? FYI pundits (and Farkers) there is a difference there.

The study also says "recent research has revealed that specific tastes can influence moral processing, with sweet tastes inducing prosocial behavior and disgusting tastes harshening moral judgments.". Though I doubt folks here will start blasting folks that are exposed to disgusting tastes.

But dont let facts get in the way of your unjustified stereotypes leading you to treat these folks with the same elitism you criticise them for.

That's a pretty weird little study, since the people that looked at pictures of food didn't actually make any choices that warranted moral licensing.

And 60 people in 3 groups of 20 each? That isn't exactly a large sample size.

But I don't doubt moral licensing is real. And I'm sure it applies to a lot more things than environmental choices...like people that do things because their religion says they should, or people that work out. It's pretty fallacious to imply that we shouldn't bother improving ourselves because it might make us jerks, though. We should improve ourselves AND work at not being jerks.

My CSB: It's not double the cost if you do it right. Then again, I live in California with an insanely long growing seasons and plentiful farmer's markets. A lot of my fruit comes from a family farm that has been in operation for almost 80 years. Nice folks with cheap, pesticide free berries :)

Eating good is more important than eating organic. More folks should start their, IMO. The article is bang on though - I have to actively prevent myself from developing a smug sense of superiority since going organic. Having friends is also more important than organic stuff.

Meh, murder or not, it's a quick, stress-free death that makes most animals taste best. Stress hormones released prior to a less than optimally quick death affects the quality and flavor of meat. It's why Kobe-raised beef get tanked before they're slaughtered. They have no idea what's happening until the end.

Some organic foods taste better and aren't that much more expensive. Like bananas. If you eat apples with the peels, you're better off buying organic and avoiding a lot of pesticides. And, if you want to be a douche about it, eat the apples at lunch with The Secretary of Defense.

It happens. I work with a rabid environmentalist who lectured me one day because I paid the 5 cent fee to get a plastic bag during a lunch trip to CVS (there's a city tax in DC on them). She drives a hybrid (natch). She spent five minutes explaining to me how I was terrible for the earth because I got that one plastic bag, I didn't respect the earth, and she was personally offended because people like her had to "work extra" to make up for people like me.

I then spent two minutes explaining to her that I live on a retired 45 acre farm that I've let go back to nature, my county doesn't have trash pickup so we have to sort all our trash each week and dump it off (for money) at the recycling transfer station, and when I have to come to work, all two days a month, I take a train. Otherwise, I work from home. Water is from a well, waste goes to a septic field that is isolated from anyone else by at least a mile, and I get an EPA wetland mitigation credit each year for the part of my property that butts up to a river.

I told her if we added up each other's "net earth usage" at least I was pretty damn close to breaking even, but she was absolutely atrocious, primarily because she doesn't own any land with vegetation to offset her damage.

Her response? "You probably use plastic bags at home, too." Nah, I use paper.

What irritated me the most is that this twunt felt perfectly justified to get all high and mighty with me because I needed something to carry my shiat with and I didn't have a reusable bag stored in my secret pants pocket, or wherever the hell she thought I was going to keep it. I didn't follow her around the office pointing out it took more energy daily to clean her shiatwater from her apartment building than I use to light my home office for a month. Why? Because I don't give a shiat.

Doing a "good dead" now makes you into a jerk later.
This explains why Christians that attend church are more likely to be jerks than people that don't.

"There's something about being exposed to organic food that made them feel better about themselves, that made them kind of jerks a little bit, I guess."

IT'S TRUE! I guess.

I have a vegetable garden and have always been around gardeners. I guess us country folks are mega-douchey.

Seriously, if you're proud of yourself for your wise decision to eat canned vegetables and lot-fed beef, that's your decision, I guess, but most of you anti-organic, anti-liberal, anti-conservation people are mega-douches.

"WAAAH! PEOPLE DO THINGS WE DON'T LIKE!"

Whatever. If you want to live somewhere that's big into conformity, move to North Korea.

DC has a tax? Meh. Where I live we don't have a tax (yet, but this being broke-ass Illinois, it's probably coming) but businesses like Kroger give a discount for having your own bags.

As for making up for other people being wasteful douches...meh. That's a losing game. Worrying about me is a big enough problem, and it sounds like it is for you, too.

Plus, there's more plastic bags these days that are compostable, and made from vegetable matter to boot.
