Of course the merpeople are out there.

When the Ice Age covered much of the land, the most pragmatic of our kind sought the familiar confines of the sea. There were adequate deposits of protein and a more constant temperature gradiant.

While terrestrial beings were innundated by gases and climes that did not suit them, the merpeople bided their time.

We remain unaware of them by their design. They have not stopped waiting.

marius2: Another once great channel has fallen.

Alas, Animal Planet fell a long time ago. Unless you meant it in a Divine Comedy sort of way.

I haven't had cable for 3 years. It's not because I'm a snob that thinks people should be climbing mountains in their spare time, but because every channel is trying to do the same thing and it all sucks.

Gotta go with A. You can still get oral.

What? You've never gotten oral from a fish? You're missing out. Plus, like others have said, they can't talk.

Hipster Ariel is kinda hot. It'd be even better if she couldn't speak and had human legs (and what's between them).

Yes, because some farkstick makes a mockumentary, that means all science is a lie and the Bible is literally true.

I always thought it'd be funny to portray mermaids in some sort of fiction as horrible, poo-flinging sea apes with fish tails. Trout from the waist down, pissed off chimp from the waist up.

Great Porn Dragon: And now I have "Murmaider" stuck in my head, thanks. :D (And thank you for pointing out that--until very, very recently--mermaids were NOT considered nice creatures AT ALL and considered pretty damn infamous for luring sailors to their deaths. Come to think of it, the original fae ALSO were considered pretty damn scary until "tamed down" to the modern image of fairies...)

Mermaids are the selfsame sirens that tried to kill Odysseus and his men. And H.P. Lovecraft's Deep Ones were always supposed to had been based on fact. And yes, even the Fae that are supposed to be friendly towards us can be pretty dangerous. People forget that the word 'little' originally had nothing to do with size. It originally meant someone or something mean-spirited and back alley nasty.

Dr.Zom: A friend of mine, a fisherman in Alaska for over 20 years, knows a guy who saw one. He went topside one night to pee off the side and interrupted a hominid of some kind with skin the color of a fish belly climbing into the boat. He screamed, it skedaddled.

And if you go back to the earliest recorded Western merpeople sightings there are many that are definitely not dugongs or other sea mammals. The sightings report the things to have legs just like we do.

I've heard other stories like this one. And yes, most of them appear to have legs like we do, but I suspect that maybe their feet have adapted to living in the ocean and that gives us an illusion of having a tail.

MisterLoki: Is there a crypto database similar to MUFON?

I wish there was. There's some cryptozoology websites, of course. But most of them do more harm than good. And some of the most famous cryptozoologists are so biased towards certain kinds of cryptids like sasquatch and the nessies, that other creatures are overlooked or forgotten. One big problem that's occurring right now is the greying of the investigators. Some months, the biggest cryptozoology stories are which cryptozoologists have passed away. And when those people pass away, their collections of books and memorabilia are broken up and sometimes tossed away into the trash. End of a database.

I forgot to add that the Fae are/were called "The Little People", and during the Victorian era, people Disneyfied fairy tales.

The question still stands.

Fish tails go side to side, aquatic mammals like whales and dolphins tails go up and down. Mermaids tails go up and down. So just like whales and dolphins, they will have mammal parts. So the choice is easy, #1
