What's the TSA doing on an airplane?

2012-05-22 01:32:08 PM
Whatever it is
1) the first reports will be wrong
2) It will turn out to be something incredibly stupid.
3) There will have been a huge overreaction in the stupidest way possible.
4) the second reports will also prove to not include the full extent of the stupidity.

vegasj: cptjeff: vegasj: If only the US could install TSA workers across the globe...

We do.

well fark me.

I was trying to be sarcastic one way... but I guess make it the other way.

Yup. Coming back to the US these days, you first go through local security. But since the EU's standards are too low or something, you then go in a US line, where your bags are inspected by a TSA agent, and you go through another metal detector, body scanner, or whatever. Depends on the setup in the individual airport. In Ireland, it was a full checkpoint with Customs that you could pre clear. In Spain, it was a couple guys in the terminal with a magnetic wand.

Then you get back to the US, where you, if you didn't do a pre clear thing, go through customs. Then you, without having ever left a secured area, mysteriously have to go through security again before getting on your domestic connection.

TSA don't know 'bout diabetes

"Suspicious" behavior? Was he acting polite, not blabbing on his phone prior to takeoff, not getting shiate faced drunk and going to the bathroom every 10 minutes or banging the seat all the time?

gweilo8888: Every time I read the words "abundance of caution", I mentally insert the words "total overreaction".

It's the same thing, really.

That stood out to me as an odd phrase, too.

Maybe, though, the passenger was trying to ignite a shoe bomb or something equally sinister. Let's give the crew the benefit of the doubt lest we, ourselves, overreact.

I'm flying Air France from Detroit to Paris in July. I was surprised to find that the French were willing to have such a direct connection to that city.

Apparently the passenger was a kid who doesn't kick seats, whine about length of flight or run up and down the aisle of the plane.

"Wait, here comes the stewardess. Oh, miss - hammma hammina jihad."

Its a holdover from military tradition.

When you have a flag on backwards, you are signifying the how the flag would look if you were holding one running forward.

cman: Holy shiat, Maine is back in the national news. This happens only once a year at most.

Yeah, Houlton/Presque Isle seems to get its share of national incidents, too. Bomb threats, hijackings, people running the border WITH DRUGS (this happened last month), not to mention some of the 9/11 hijackers managed to enter through Presque Isle, IIRC... Oh, and then there was that Canadian that came through at Houlton and went to the Bangor area, where he murdered a couple kiddy diddlers. The guy's dad used to work for us.

We get SOME excitement, but not much.

According the "official rules of the flag" (okay, I made that up), that's the way it should be on the right side of anything that moves I believe.

I totally get that - on the port side they do it correctly - on the starboard they display it stars aft - it is supposed to be drawn as if the wind is blowing it. Delta does this correctly.

Are the Frenchies invading us through Charlotte?

Charlotte is pretty much the biggest USAir hub on the east coast.

It's a phrase we see with staggering (pops) regularity (pops), yet we rarely see real terrorist attacks thwarted *or* happening, which is why I find it much more believable that it's just another overreaction, rather than an extremely rare instance of something nefarious happening.

U.S. Airways having good service? I don't believe it.

Considering I'm currently waiting to board a Delta flight after US Airways cancelled my 1/2-full flight 3 hours before departure and didn't have any other flights to get me to my destination that (A) didn't have a 6-hour stop in Charlotte and/or (B) got me there the same day (and it's an engineering development review with people from multiple locations so we need to all be there)... I'm with you fellers.

Pretty routine for Bangor. First available stop in the US. Usually it involves too much free booze and something like (with appropriate slurs) "give me another drink or I'll set off a bomb".

Drop him off in Bangor where they have all the facilities to deal with such passengers and continue on their way.

Next day hung-over passenger shows up in court, pleads guilty of a minor offense and pays off a fine before being allowed to make his way onward (with another airline of course). The bill for the airline having to make an unscheduled stop will arrive later.

It's also only got 9 stripes and no stars, at least according to the picture Purdue_Pete posted. That bug you too? It's their logo, which happens to kind of resemble the flag. It's not The Flag™. So it doesn't follow the same rules.

/Retract this if someone posts a pic with a US Air tail that has The Flag™ on it going in the wrong direction. I don't feel like looking it up.
