meanmutton: dittybopper: hitlersbrain: That movie was so idiotic, there is simply nothing you could do to make it worse.

That invasion would have lasted about 2 days, with the last day just rounding up the surrendering stragglers.

You mean like we did in Iraq and Afghanistan?

BizarreMan: wxboy: most Americans can't tell the difference between a Korean and a Chinese man.

This

What, and most Americans can look at someone who is of European heritage and tell where they're from?

I can tell a Spaniard from a Swede with 90+% accuracy.

" don't get why Red Dawn is so popular with conservatives. It's about a bunch of terrorists who hide among the civilian population, don't wear uniforms, and despite that wage war on brave hero troops. This is hypocrisy at its finest"

No, its about Americans defending their homes from an unprovoked attacked.. And its just a movie.
but some people have to be SOOO serious about everything.

Any remake of that stupid movie is stupid. It was stupid when they first made it, and it will be much more stupid now.

Chinese invading? Give me a break. When was the last time the Chinese invaded anywhere? They're taking us over with economic means, not military. They're letting us be the stupid ones bankrupting ourselves on weapons and military.

So now, North Korea. At least you can make a plausible case that they'd do something that insane.

People complaining about "political correctness": would you have any tolerance for a movie that showed the U.S. as the bad guy and showed our soldiers getting slaughtered by a proud country defending itself from our military? No, you wouldn't. Why wouldn't China be offended by the same, retarded premise?

If North Korea is offended, who cares. Except that nut's son might launch a nuke.

They should cancel this entire brainless project. Turn it into a romantic comedy in post production.

The fact that moviegoers believe that "We have 2 submarines and a rowboat" China or North Korea can cross the ocean without becoming fish food is even more insulting.

Just like Iraqis and Afghanis are defending their country from an unprovoked attack and trying to kick the foreign invaders out. They're either "terrorists" or "heroic resistance". Make your mind up.

Prologue/Opening Narration: Soviet Union suffers worst wheat harvest in 55 years... Labor and food riots in Poland. Soviet troops invade... Cuba and Nicaragua reach troop strength goals of 500,000. El Salvador and Honduras fall... Greens Party gains control of West German Parliament. Demands withdrawal of nuclear weapons from European soil... Mexico plunged into revolution... NATO dissolves. United States stands alone.

The first one happened in an alternate history. Maybe in this timeline Best Korea won in the '50s and took all the East coast and Japan due to Great Leader's military genius.

Two thoughts:

1). In the original, Cuba invades the US, and that's mostly who the kids are fighting (some Russian advisors). That's just as ridiculous.

2). I'm not sure why the Chinese would find the notion that they could conquer the USA insulting. That would be like me being insulted if someone was telling a story about me kicking Mike Tyson's ass...

Oddly enough, it was seriously derided by conservatives when it first came out. They saw it as liberals saying that America was incredibly weak that it could be invaded in the first place.

/The original Red Dawn was a painfully stupid movie to begin with (see lawboy87's post).
//Can't imagine this will be better.

Migrating Coconut: Matt Eckert: What about Europe?
Col. Andrew Tanner: I guess they figured twice in one century was enough. They're sitting this one out. All except England, and they won't last very long.
Eckert: Well, who is on our side?
Tanner: Six hundred million screamin' Chinamen.
Darryl Bates: Well, last I heard, there were a billion screamin' Chinamen.
Tanner: There were. [throws whiskey into fire, and it violently ignites for a moment, possibly signifying a Soviet nuclear strike on China]

How are they going to top that with Best Korea?

Best lines of the movie. Completely down the drain. I suppose they could put the Russians in there.

I suppose having North Korea as the principal enemy in the film could be somewhat doable if it is a Chinese led invasion and the movie just happens to be set in a zone occupied by their North Korean allies (kind of like Red Dawn, where most of the movie is fighting Cubans during a Soviet led invasion).

mister aj: I don't get why Red Dawn is so popular with conservatives. It's about a bunch of terrorists who hide among the civilian population, don't wear uniforms, and despite that wage war on brave hero troops. This is hypocrisy at its finest.

But they are Amurikans. Amurikans can't be turrurists, they are always glorious freedom fighters.

This

Exactly. We Americans are mutts. Even those of us who claim purebred heritage are of mixed ancestry. We're all part-something. I'm part-Welsh, part-Cheyenne, part-English, part-who-knows-what? Even the Americans of darker skin tones whose families have been here for more than a couple generations are of mixed heritage, being part-Somalian, part-Irish (great, great-granny was a slave to an Irish master, had a few kids by him), part-Jamaican, or whatever else.

The best you can do in America is make a guess based on the person's surname. If it's O'Something, they're probably going to identify as Irish. If it's VanderSomething they're probably raised to believe their Dutch. If it's Jones or Smith, they're probably unconcerned with their heritage and fall back on "English" or "European".

However, that being said, I am usually able to tell Asians apart, but it is harder for westerners to do, in the same way that it's hard for an Asian to tell Native American tribes apart. Would every Chinese person really be able to tell the difference between a Sioux, Cheyenne, Apache, or Chippewa?

Arkanaut: It's been Homefronted!

I love how the storyline in that game only works because Best Korea initiates a land grab of all the Asian islands. By the odds, most of the enemy troops have to be Indonesian, Filipino, or Japanese-born, but because they were taken over a couple years before, they are "Korean".

As a person with Japanese relatives who voted for a socialist party that favors North Korea, I would say that North Korea at least promotes American-friendly sentiments to Japan and South Korea in the weirdest way. Maybe North Korea isn't an evil country in terms of encouraging American national interests. Maybe I just want to think differently after all these years of living back and forth.

I would think if you were afraid to offend the chinese that a reedit and a few reshoots would be cheaper than to digitally edit the chicoms to norkos. Shoot a few scenes where the kids rape and pillage and rape poor chinese imigrants and other bad acts. The end Moa breaks out of his glass cofin and with his bear hands personally rips apart limb from limb the sniviling president in hiding while pissing on the constitution. Keep the original edit for US dist and the reedit for chinese dist. Both countries get their propaganda.

I have no problem with corporate bad guys in fiction.

I have a problem with a classic movie being remade and change "foreign power" as a US enemy to "corporation(s)" being US enemy.

Fiction in which the corporations are the bad guys to begin with is fine.

theknuckler_33: Invading force from North Korea? How the fark are they going to get here?

Now THAT's fantasy.

Here's how they explained it in Homefront:

The game's backstory begins during the early 21st century, with tensions between North Korea and global powers running high due to North Korea's military aggression, including its successful tests of nuclear weapons and the sinking of a South Korean ship.

In 2013, one year after the death of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-il (which, incidentally, came in December 2011, several months after the game's release), his son and successor, Kim Jong-un, reunites North and South Korea to form the Greater Korean Republic (GKR). By 2015, a war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, both now nuclear-armed states, has devastated the global oil supply, causing prices to skyrocket. This precipitates extreme economic turmoil and massive social unrest in the U.S. Subsequently, in 2017, the U.S. military recalls much its overseas presence, particularly in the Pacific. A year later, Japan is conquered by the GKR under the threat of full-scale war.

In 2022, conditions in the U.S. worsen with the collapse of the financial system and an Asian bird flu epidemic that claims millions of lives. In 2024, Korea continues its expansion by annexing most of Southeast Asia, including its emerging economic powers. A year later, the Korean superstate launches a supposed GPS satellite that is actually an orbital weapon. It detonates a high-altitude nuclear device over the U.S., creating an EMP burst that wipes out much of the nation's electrical infrastructure. In the ensuing chaos, the KPA launches an amphibious invasion that seizes control of Hawaii and much of the U.S. Pacific Coast. KPA paratroopers are deployed over the Midwest and, with the U.S. military severely crippled and scattered, are able to effectively divide the nation at the Mississippi River, placing the Western states under GKR occupation.

Isn't it worse to insult North Korea?

Not because anybody actually cares what they think, but because they're crazy enough to act on it. The Chinese are at least intelligent enough to say "Okay, ha ha. Very funny, you guys. We get it. We're big and scary. Now buy our stuff."

The Best Korean leadership could either:
a.) Turn this into a propaganda film, once they get their hands on a DVD copier.
and/or
b.) Throw a hissy fit and launch what weapons they do have at somebody.

That would actually work. Remember, the Cubans in the film were basically occupation troops, not front-line soldiers. They were the second or third string players, relegated to keeping the local yahoos in line. That's why the "Wolverines" were able to operate as successfully as they did for a short time: They weren't fighting front-line troops, they were up against bored, under-trained and under-equipped Cubans.

Note the Cuban troops using FN-FALs in one scene: They would have been reserve units who hadn't yet been issued AKs. The Soviets wouldn't have put troops like that anywhere near the front lines: The logistical nightmare of issuing 7.62mm NATO ammo to the Cubans on the front would have been a major pain in the ass. So you stick them in the rear where they aren't likely to use up their ammo, and where they can resupply from the sporting goods stores.

Heh, it's kind of funny. Tyrannies and despots have made their countries go broke trying to use force and spies against us. All they had to do was offer us slave labor and our rich just hand them wealth and build factories in their countries, ripe for the taking whenever they want. Conquered by our own greed. I'd be a better movie to see the Wolverines terrorize Wal-Mart and Bain Capital.

I've never heard of an AMC theater but I'll do my best to avoid them in the future but then again I usually go to the locally owned second run theater with the exception of a couple big budget movies a year. It will interesting how the Freepers view this one. On one hand they hate "PC" stuff on the other hand they love military stuff.
