"When I saw the news I was absolutely horrified," said State Senator Leland Yee, referring to a CBS5 report about the so-called bullet button.

Leland Yee being the asshole who tried banning violent video games (to protect us from ourselves) before SCOTUS smacked him down. Glad to see he's not given up his nanny state BS.

Never taken a little semi-auto rifle to a range have you? It's pretty fun, and honestly not any more dangerous than a semi auto pistol, it's all the same, bullets fly as fast as you can pull a trigger

Actually, this sounds reasonable. The gun control laws prohibit removable magazines in specific circumstances, and this feature would seem to be a pretty obvious attempt to skirt that law.

And no, you don't need an assault rifle. Ever. You want home defense? Get yourself a shotgun. You want personal protection because you wander into South Central every morning? Get a handgun. Want to hunt? Plenty of other rifles.

The only use for an assault weapon is to play on a range, or to kill people. And you getting your jollies a little bit more than you would with a different gun does not outweigh the state's interest in trying to keep other people safe from people who think that playing around with machines explicitly designed to kill people is fun.

Except for longer range, more accuracy, higher stopping power- there is absolutely a legitimate reason for limits. Or do you think you should be able just to buy a missile launcher?

I don't care if you have fun. Guns are serious weapons, not toys. Have fun at the range, again, I don't care. I do care when people think that their fun is more important than minimizing the number of serious weapons floating around in the criminal underworld.

Where's this scourge of bullet-button modded AR rifles floating around in the criminal underworld?

And for the record, an AR rifle, or any other 5.56x45 weapon, is going to be safer than a typical shotgun load for home defense. Buckshot and slugs will penetrate many interior walls, not to mention an assailant. Even FMJ 5.56 is going to fragment almost instantly upon impact.

I think it's generally agreed upon that the Bill of Rights was put in place to ensure the freedom and relative safety of the American people. Neither of those is dependent on you owning an assault rifle. You can hunt with a deer rifle. You can defend yourself and your home with a pistol or a shotgun. You're just shoehorning your desire to treat assault weapons as toys into a vague notion of freedom.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. The second amendment is there for the populace to be armed against all those who would take freedoms away, be it a foreign invader or a domestic threat. This includes the government if it begins to overstep it's bounds. It doesn't say "The right to bear arms shall not be infringed (except in cases where the arms are scary looking)." If you want that in there, start a constitutional convention to amend it, or talk to your legislators and get them moving to amend it. Until that happens, tough shiat.

I don't think his notion of freedom is very vague.

See, freedom means that other people get to make decisions that you wouldn't make, for reasons you don't agree with. And as long as they are not committing crimes, you don't say a word about it.

So you're saying anything that goes beyond an absolute minimal requirement should be outlawed ? What's it to you if I own an AR-15 ? What if, as was the case in NOLA after Katrina, the cops illegally go around taking peoples' guns away ? Then I need an AR-15 and whatever it takes to defend myself from the government. I use mine to kill hogs. They're a huge problem (hell Texas legalized helicopter shooting for them), and an AR allows me to fire multiple shots at one target (if necessary) or take out multiple because they multiply like horny rabbits.

I don't understand the "fixed magazine" rule. Does that simply require that the magazine must be removed with a tool in order to reload?

With that bullet button thing, the next logical step is to have some sort of clip-on device that holds a pin over the bullet button hole and allows you to depress it to eject the magazine without having to fumble for anything.
