When I was a kid those characters were awesome to meet in real life. Fast forward 20 years and take away weed for a week and all I wanted to do was punch those bastards in the face.

Disney is a nightmare for a childless, pessimistic, 20 something year old

True enuf, but I can't decide whether I'm jealous of Howard or simply enjoy the implied beastly cunnilingus.

I'd have ran full throttle in the opposite direction fearing for my life if I saw these things at a young age, and I was a fearless kid. Then I'd set the stage for decades in the future by suing the hell out of them. Who the hell grows up and says: "I want to waltz around Disneylandworld scaring little children"

The Pooh and Big Ad Wolf costumes were used until about 1990 until they switched to the modern soft foam ones. The old Pooh and Pigs and Hatter were fiberglass.

The old Baloo costume was held together with car seatbelt clasps with a metal frame supporting the fiberglass head. The modern one is nice soft foam.

/passed out after an NBC commercial shoot in that damed thing in 1989

Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit unavailable for comment because Disney hasn't made mention of that movie since it's theatrical re-release in the '80s. (There's a joke in there about positive black attractive and successful African-American male role models, but I'm not going to go there. Rather unfortunate that Disney has chosen to manufacture fare for certain stereotypical audiences, instead of animating actual folk tales accurately anymore.)

Seen it, don't get the shunning it takes. Is it any more offensive than the crows in Dumbo or King Louie in The Jungle Book? I can't really say it is.

To be fair that is merely one story from the movie. It ain't like they got an old black man in each boat narrating the ride.

True enough. There's the vast difference between the book version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Disney version, as well as the historical Pocahontas account and the Disney cartoon. If kids knew the original stories, they'd probably never trust anyone again.

I've been going to Disneyland since February 1956. Other than parades, until 1974, I never saw a costumed Disney character in the park. But yes, I have a photo (somewhere) of me shaking Mickey's hand two days after I left active duty in the Air Force. He looked much like he does now. I suspect the costume is more comfortable for the wearer these days. I had a business partner who was costumed as Goofy when Disneyland chose to not have the non-face characters speak any more. Guild rules, or too many characters getting injured and responding in unDisneylike ways. It took them a while to add cast members to guard/watch the characters who could not see behind or to the sides of them and speak for them. It looks like a number of those photos were taken from the Mickey Mouse Club or Disneyland TV shows.

I visited Disneyland for the first time when I was four years old. That would have been 1965. I was terrified of people in costume BEFORE I went, but during that visit, I got chased around the merry-go-round by THIS character:

This reminds me of Norman Bates' mother. Walt was a cruel farker to attach this to someone's head with a tack.

I have a photo of me shaking hands with Mickey in what must have been around 1968-69. He was not frightening at all, but rather the friendly big-handed, big-eyed, and no shredded muzzle like that picture with Jerry Colonna and his kids. I recall we were leaving the park at the end of the day and there he was, like Jesus or something, my mind was blown and he actually waited FOR ME as I ran over to shake his hand. Pretty farking cool when you're 5 years old.

Walt looks pissed, and Minnie has the look of the downtrodden, bullied wife. Rabbit and Alice are trying to make nice and pretend there's no elephant in the living room, but Mickey's pretty much checked out altogether.
