FTA...a typo citing the Lyndon B. Johnson School of 'Pubic' Affairs.

That's funny right there, especially if you know anything about LBJ's legendary sexual appetite.

FTFA: Still, it's interesting how much fuss the omission of one letter can lead to. No one was killed, no one lost their job and any concerned parties can rest assured that they will have a corrected commencement program to reflect upon in the future. But it's not going to stop the critics of the world from expressing their outrage at the fallibility of others.

Pretty much this.

That is a surprisingly easy mistake to make, considering that word processing software tends to recognize both words as, well, words. Mom used to run into it when she worked for the state government, and she taught me to watch for it.

It's not good when it gets out on a program like this. Funny, though.

used to work at the Kinkos near KU(I ran production). Once the contract with KU went through they had to do all their printing through us, or face a stiff penalty(pun intended). Reading through the commencement materials one year, I came across several spelling and grammatical errors throughout the program(print one and check it, or print 1500 and regret it). Fixed them and ran with it. The day before the ceremony, the day the programs were due to be picked up, the woman who was our contact called. She was in a true panic; I could tell she was close to tears on the other end of the line, as something like this would probably cost her her job, or at best, she'd never be promoted again. I had left a note that my boss was supposed to call her and tell her we had found some errors and fixed them, but the note had gotten lost, it seemed. After calming her down, I went over her list of errors, compared them to my list, and pointed out a few more that her student editor, who was sober this time, had missed. After hearing that she really didn't have a problem, she hung up the phone after thanking me. That was it, and the thank you was all I needed. Disaster at KU averted(there were some interesting spelling errors in that program, as though someone had hit F7 and just hit "Change All" when prompted, but didn't go back and make sure everything made sense), and no one was the wiser.

/when I quit that job, their sales plummeted
//why yes, I did have a lot of loyal customers. Loyal to me, because I took care of them
///I can make copiers sing and dance ... which is probably why my boss tolerates me.
////slashies are for going back to college and getting out of that dump

oh, and on behalf of all the guys/girls printing your wedding/graduation/baby shower/whatever announcements, as well as being one of them: Please, for the love of god, stop using Microsoft Publisher. Pay someone the $20-$25 to type it up for you, and let them deal with the printing. We don't like it, we don't have the font you downloaded just for this particular item, and no, we can't access the system tools to enable it on our computer. This goes doubly for programs of any sort.

/not bitter, it's just a pain to fix formatting errors

"Obviously, we are mortified. It's beyond embarrassing," Binford said. "As soon as we realized the mistake [on Saturday], everybody went into overdrive and we went to work to reprint it."

They should have changed pubic affairs to Dumbo affairs since that is what LBJ nicknamed his cock as in "I wonder who me and Dumbo are going to fark tonight." which was his frequent comment at social events. He got away with whacking JFK and Bobby so he was just as adept at farking people over figuratively as he was literally according to his lawyer and Jackie.

There's a guy at the library I work for who has repeatedly made this error on our literature. And once, on the painting instructions for the logo on our new delivery truck. Idiot.

Although, my imagination runs riot at the thought of a Pubic Library.

I wonder if the typo ever gets made in reverse.
For example, has a doctor or nurse ever written, "Patient was complaining of itching in her public area"?

This is why all copy editors should always remove the word "pubic" from their spell check dictionaries. It might be the right word to use, but if it's not, it's nice to have it underlined for you.

My father ran a small weekly newspaper. High school graduation was a big deal. The center page would have all the seniors pictures and, of course, a small block of tasteful advertising. Kids gotta eat. Headlines were set on this photoelectric machine where you advanced a roll of negatives and printed each letter by stepping on a pedal. The letter spacing was tricky and sometimes you'd write a headline where a couple of letters overlapped.

Anyhoo, Tuesday night, the newspaper has to go to the printers tomorrow and Dear ol' Dad tells Harry to set a headline in 72 point sans "Congratulations Class of 1975!." I stomped out the headline "Congradulations Class of 1975!." I guess because I spaced the letters perfectly, no one noticed the misspelling - until the paper came out.

We claimed it was an inside joke: con 'grad' ulations. Get it? Get it? No. No one else got it either.

Better than being named Patrick Fitzgerald...yep, that was a classmate...and later found out he was gay.
