The Why Not Guy: tenpoundsofcheese: someone making fun of the tie you are wearing is hardly a beatdown. it just shows how desperate and immature Stewart was.

There was a bit more to it than that, as I'm sure you know.

His attention span isn't that long. In fact he probably didn't even watch it, but got a summation of a summation of a FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD: FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:LIBERAL MEDIA email that vaguely mentioned it for half a sentence.

You mean like the time Conservatives where going to end federal subsidies of Big OIl only to flip-flop when it came to a vote?

Yeah, great *stand* there.

Sorry to disappoint you derpy but I read the article:

"Ruben said some of his liberal friends didn't like his column because it humanized people that didn't deserve it."

"He made liberals angry because he let conservatives state their opinion and look human"

Did you read the article?

Not liking a column is not equivalent to anger. (All) Liberals are not in lockstep with a handful of his friends.

Mikey1969: Former Daily Show Producer: I Felt Uncomfortable Mocking People Just Because I Disagreed With Them

Then don't mock them 'just because you disagree with them', that's not the point of Daily Show, nor is it the point of the Colbert Report. Both those shows mock political morons, they don't set the bar so low that all they have to do is mock people they disagree with, they mock people who are dumb enough(Yet somehow talented enough) to walk around all day with at least 1 foot in their mouths at all times.

It's not the comedy writers' faults that the Right gives them comedy gold on a daily basis...

So much THIS. You know damned well that if the same level of humor was present in the liberal politicians, that it would be immediately seized upon by right-wingers and capitalized upon. Instead they simply cry 'bias' repeatedly, but only because they are incapable of sourcing material that funny from the other side.

2012-05-21 05:43:25 PM
I'm sure the people behind Fox News feel exactly the same way about being decent to people they disagree with and trying to look at stories from multiple angles.

BWAHAHAHAH... oh man. I crack myself up.

phyrkrakr: Here's the link if you actually want to read his viewpoint in his own words, and not some blog posting a video of somebody interviewing him about his viewpoint.

To sum up, "I disagree with your politics, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler."

And that's why the Daily Show is so great - they can point out the crazy viewpoints without hating the crazy people. They don't call out Fox News about their bullshiat because they hate everything about Fox News - they lecture Fox News because they're pretty sure that the people involved with the channel could actually do good work, instead of the cack-handed awkwardness they're pushing over there.

It's like the disappointed sigh of the truly dedicated teacher when confronted with a particularly troublesome kid's antics. Yes, I know that shooting spitwads at the nerd is amusing, but I also know that you can read above a seventh grade level and if you actually tried, you could at least be pulling a B in this class. It's that mixture of frustration and disappointment instead of actual anger that makes Stewart the best media commentator today.

always appreciated daily show as the only place to get news without a monster amount of spin.

unfortunately, they have drifted toward what i supposed was a natural conclusion: uber liberal mouthpiece. i mean, when you set yourself up as the polar opposite of Faux News, it's bound to happen.

for example: they have taken the position that ALL teachers are overworked and underpaid.

which is a silly as conservatives saying that they are ALL under worked and over paid.

the truth is somewhere in the middle
but on this issue especially, the Daily Show never looks at the idea that out of control retirements are crashing individual states.

/they are still the main resource for my news of the world.
//still have a sad that most of my news comes from the comedy channel

And that is also what makes TDS so horrible: All they do is point out the crazies. They don't actually do anything about them, even if they're in positions of power.

/God help us if they try to do another rally for sanity in October.
//Two weeks later: Hellooooooo President Romney.

If you're uncomfortable satirizing, it's generally not advised to produce a satirical news program.

2012-05-21 06:55:49 PM

s1ugg0: Actually as a Liberal I love that they calm down the right wing rage and let these people express their ideas. I don't agree with them but without the shrill yelling we get with every other news program, I can actual listen to them and then debate the idea on it's merits.

Example Bill O'Reilly. I disagree with 99% of his view points. But when he is on the Daily Show he comes off as less of a douche and I find myself actually listening to what he says.

I actually gained a modicum of respect for the man after he appeared on the shrimp bit. He came off more as a likeable human instead of the insufferable asshole he plays 90% of the time on his show. If he used more rational or at least tongue-in-cheek discourse on his own program once in a while instead of the insults and wild hyperbole I might actually tune in more often.

2012-05-21 07:24:23 PM
I admire the quality of their work, but The Daily Show, post the last presidential election, has strayed a bit too far into self-appointed nobility leading to false-equivalence reporting. Too often a right wing guest is not really asked those hard questions at all, and allowed to joke and softball their way through it. It began with the foolishness of the 'Rally to restore Reason'.

This is a good point, and one of the ways that John Stewart really changed the show after taking over from Kilburn. Kilburn was content just making fun of powerless weirdos who couldn't fight back, or mocking models for not being well educated in his interviews. Stewart took that idea, attached a social conscience to it, and applied the approach to important issues, like the innumerable tinpot tyrannies of local and state government.

The best example of this was his treatment of that old kook who used to run for president every year that the Daily Show would always cover. For Kilburn, he was just an easy target to lambast; a crazy to make fun of and feel superior to. But Stewart humanized the man, used comedy as an excuse to let his audience get to know him, and when he died, Stewart gave him a really touching send-off. In this way Stewart is a lot like Andrew Sullivan; as much as I might disagree with him on certain things, they're both come off as deeply decent, deeply human men and you just can't hate someone like that.
