Up 8% this morning.

HOT DOUGHNUTS NOW!

2012-05-21 11:29:57 AM
Strange, they just started selling them in my grocery store and I just got some, even though I'm usually not a sweets guy. Unfortunately they have a half life of like 7 minutes.

2012-05-21 12:24:40 PM
Although I am a Dunkin Donuts guy, Krispy Kremes are definitely better when
they are fresh. DD, however, are better longer; I even like them when they are
day-old (not that they usually last that long).

Less net profit, but more revenue. Shares up 10%

Krispy Kreme can only be eaten as soon as they're done baking/being glazed, any more time and they turn to crap.

Shipley's is the god-king of donuts.

Round Rock Donuts FTW.

So selling cold sugar-coated donuts in the Grocery Store is not actually a booming business in California? Who knew.

When hot and fresh, they're wonderful. At all other times they're crap.

That!

My love for the past few years though has been Fractured Prune donuts. The flavor and types they make are amazing. Great now I want a dozen.

I'd have to agree, though they were replaced by Round Rock Donuts once I finally had one.

That's the ones with the yellow glaze? Family friends who lived across the street in Taylor used to bring us some all the time. I am over by Burnet now so I don't get over there too often. Might have to make a run one morning.

The Emperor's New Donuts have had quite a long run.

And the other.

You just can't beat Shipleys on quality or price. There may be some artisan doughnut shop that was claimed to the best by some snob foodie where you can get caviar and lobster doughnuts for $200 a dozen, but Shipley's doughnuts and kolaches are damn good and damn cheap.

A sausage, jalapeno, and cheese kolache and a devil's food doughnut is my go to breakfast when having to go to work hungover*.

Holy crap me too! Except I add a dozen donut holes with it. Those jalapeno kolaches are unbelievably amazing

I also appreciate that Shipleys is a franchise business where the corporate masters aren't nazi's. Each store is allowed to have their own personalities and it shows. The most unbelievably delicious single food item I have ever had was a boudin kolache at the Shipley's in Livingston.

Well that's a lie, I actually had three of them.

Yep, that's it. Also, those donuts made an appearance on Man V. Food. :D

They're like $2 each and have no heft at all. Pass.

2012-05-21 02:53:22 PM
Dunkin Donuts pulled out of California/Oregon 15 or 20 years back. No idea why. They have several types of donuts I just can't find anywhere else. Always make it a point to buy some when traveling on business.

Because they were pushed out by the best donuts in the world: random Korean immigrant who runs the DONUTS store on every other corner in every city in the state.

You dolts!

Microwave those donuts for 5-8 seconds and its game on deliciousness all over again.

No Peanut Butter donuts. Insta-fail.

If you're doughnut shop isn't called, "Donuts" in neon with mismatched chairs at the card tables and a fridge of get-it-yourself OJ, it's probably not worth stopping at.

I fail to understand how a store that makes the perfect food can lose money.

/And yes, they do suck when they're cold. But when they're hot... mmmmmmmm

2012-05-21 04:15:01 PM
That said though, if given a choice, I'd opt for kolaches over almost any donuts. :)

What about donut plant in NYC?

I don't think I'll ever "get" kolaches.

I've tried them from a variety of places.

I'd rather have a Shipley's donut every time.

I still remember a few years back when they relocated the local police station it wasn't long before the Krispy Kreme up the block closed. Sometimes cliches are true.

2012-05-21 06:15:26 PM
That's a shame. I have 50% of my portfolio in Krispy Kreme and the other half in insulin.

Forget that, Van Thull's Triple Chocolate donuts FTW.

As far as chains, Timmy's was pretty darn good until they stopped making them in-store. Dunkin' Donuts should be outlawed, they're terrible. Never had Shipley's, but I can't see them being better than Van Thull's.

2012-05-21 07:40:04 PM
They are probably the worst farking donuts EVER. Why they were ever popular is a joke.

2012-05-21 07:59:01 PM
Kinda torn here. Love KK basic glazed, but that's it. For anything else, I'll make the 10 mile round trip to the nearest DDs.

2012-05-21 08:02:36 PM
The complany would go belly up and I'd be a happy camper. Grew up in Atlanta where every get-together or meeting just had to have a box of these nasty things. That sugar crap they glaze them with would get on everything.

2012-05-21 08:51:25 PM
They're just donuts. Why the hype?

2012-05-21 09:48:58 PM
To the peeps upthread whining about how the cold KKs don't taste good. Put it on a plate (NOT a napkin), put it in a microwave for about six seconds. Take it out. Eat it. It tastes 90% as good as off the line and a billion times better than cold. You're welcome.

kieran57: I fail to understand how a store that makes the perfect food can lose money.

It should be taught in every b-school. They built a distribution network that farked over the local franchised store networks, gave them way too little margin. Stores closed and whole areas toppled like dominoes because the parent was farking greedy. Now they get dick from those areas.

We had random Korean immigrant do that in Texas also. DD left in the mid 90's and came back after Bain capital revamped the business model so the donuts are centrally made.

Now the whole donut business has to compete with breakfast tacos. You can stop in and get a dozen egg and chorizo tacos to take to the office instead of protein free and sugar full donuts. Mornings go better if people have something with protein for breakfast.

To heck with Krispy Kreme. I enjoy an obscure brand of doughnut. You've probably never heard of it.

The random Korean immigrants who ran the local donut shop near me sold it to some white folks. The quality has gone down noticeably. I has a sad.
