The National Weather Service predicted a high of 82 degrees in Green Bay on Sunday. The temperature was 70 degrees with 63 percent humidity when the race started.

I'm not Kenyan, but I too am laughing.

/This is what happens when you let a bunch of people enter who don't understand that hydration does not involve having a second cup of coffee.

FTFY, it is Wisconsin. And they moved it to this weekend from June to avoid the heat.

True....but

Ran my 4th marathon here in san antonio last November and it was mid 80's and crazy high humidity. People were dropping left and right and unfortunelty had a young man in relatively good health pass out and die at the finish line. Were used to the heat here and we still had problems. Most people dont drive 26.2 miles to work, it really is longer than people think

What was the actual temperature? How hot is too hot for a marathon?

/They should have stopped at a Brat Stop for a cold one.

If you are actually training properly and you live in the area of the race then this will more than likely not happen. Most of these people showing up at races these days are very poorly under trained and unaware of what it will take to actually finish a race. Also posting that you've run 4 marathons isn't really a brag as much as it's saying to us "Hey, I just started doing this, look at me!". These conditions are slightly warm and if you aren't a dope you would stop running knowing you haven't trained to run in heat.

Lets just say puking and passing out were bad enough. But the people who were shiatting themselves from dehydration were the worst. More than a few reports of that happening on the course.

Marathon snob much? Even you had to start somewhere Mr. 5,200 miles alone. If people listened to people like you, then no one would be good enough to enter running. Akuma good work, 4th or 104th it is an accomplishment.

The article doesn't say what the temperature was.

Here in Michigan, Sunday, we had a Qualifier marathon in Bay City/Midland (Dow Weekend Of Races), and temperatures hit 91degF. My brother-in-law made it to mile 15, before puking his guts, and walking the rest of the way in (we were expecting him in around 3:55, but he ended up in around 5:30). Heat Stroke. It ended up getting way too hot towards after 3 hours.

I was there to help him out (his immigrant wife is uncomfortable with driving in places she doesn't know) and his family. We got worried by the 5 hour mark, and I had to backtrack the course to find him.

His son also passed out while we were watching at the finish line from the heat. Probably not enough hydration (for both of them).

The lesson: HYDRATE. Don't sweat (sorry) a potential 30sec stop at a port-a-potty in a 3~4 hour race, though most of your fluids will be exiting through your skin on that sort of run.

/Yes, the Kenyan easily won it, too

I started by training properly. You don't "enter running" you dope. You just go do it. Just don't go expecting to finish a race of any distance if you don't train properly. SMFH

Meh. Even if you train properly and live in the area, there is no way to prep for a sudden increase in temperature and humidity.

/number of races/miles is pretty meaningless, everyone trains differently.

I had a couple friends running in the GB Marathon, essentially what it came down to was 3 factors:
1. Poor organization and communication on the part of race staff.
2. A lot of people having no clue what their limits were.
3. Weather, contrary to what winter showed us so far this spring we are below average in temperatures and 82 is easily 10-15 degrees warmer than what the average has been this year (with the exception of a couple day in March, and Friday/Saturday), so most of the people that had no clue what their limits were and trained locally still ended up having the issues with temperature. If this race was run a month from now 82 degrees would have been a non-issue.

So you just showed up to each marathon and started running? Good to know. If you can't ascertain what I meant by "enter running," then you really are a douche of epic proportions. Not only that but you are completely ignoring the real meat of the comments.

You were putting down his accomplishment for having run "only" four marathons, which to the vast majority of the population are four marathons more than they will ever run. Instead of welcoming him and encouraging him to a sport, it appears, you both care about, your decision is to put him down while championing your own personal credentials. So at what point is he allowed to make a salient comment in regards to running a marathon based on his personal experience? The only person saying look at me is you. I stand by my initial statement.

I know you have to be at the gym in 26 minutes so I will check back later for your response.

I remember Chicago Marathon was shut down a couple of years ago for the same reason. Cold blooded Mid-westerners can't stand a little sunshine.

Unless something happened that we don't know about I blame the runners. According to the Green Bay Marathon web site there were water stops approximately every 1.5 miles. With that many water stops there is no reason anybody shouldn't have been able to drink enough to stay hydrated. Of course like somebody up thread said, you have to listen to your body too. If you're sweating like a stuck pig then you're probably pushing too hard and you're going to run into trouble (no pun intended)

You sound like a Running snob. Chill out man, go have a Gu pack or something. I was just stating that I had run 4 marathons, I wasn't trying to get into a pissing contest with anybody. I know im not gonna set any records, I run for the "Forest Gump" effect. It gives me time to be alone with my thoughts and relax.
