MyRandomName: It simply states liberals care more about politics than curing breast cancer. Oh no. Planned parenthood will recieve 0.5% less in funding while another cancer group receives more!!!! Burn the heretic. Liberals made it seem as if pp was the only worthwhile breast cancer center. What a joke liberals have become. Politics over everything else.

And yet it's not caring more about politics than curing breast cancer when a conservative chair of a breast cancer research charity removes funding from an organization because it doesn't agree with her political beliefs. Give me a farking break!

Seriously, take your false sense of moral superiority and fark off.

Two things of notes to the Politickers in here. Though they have little to do with this.

Chances of Mortality in both prostate and breast cancer are both about equal, yet Prostate recieves half the federal funding that breasts do. Mostly because of bullcrap marketing schemes such as Komen.

http://www.bookofodds.com/Health-Illness/Cancer/Articles/A0006-Breast - and-Prostate-Cancer-Odds

In addition, for some of our local Patent lovers, two genetic markers are available for earlier breast cancer detection, but are currently on lockdown. BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing (Read this as literally observing an on off state) are patented and testing for them is marked up at 3k (for a test that I could do for fifty bucks marginally. That's my time, plus resources.)

Which tab do you think would be more fitting for an article about people ditching a charity for political reasons?

How DARE the libs politicize our politicizing of breast cancer!

I am not the one who is politicizing this. But of course, since one can only be a democrat or a republican, that makes me a GOP guy. If only there was some third party that would be more closer to my political viewpoints

Actually, Komen politicized this. The backlash to Komen's politicizing made people in both sides of the political spectrum angry because Komen decided to hurt poor women for political gain. The response to Komen was immediate and huge. The fact that a major American charity could act that way is what speaks to the bad state of political discourse. The fact that Komen thought they were going to get away with is speaks toward their disdain and scorn of the American public.

Baloney. The fact that this is going into the politics tab reflects the way the leadership over at Susan G. Komen decided to put their own politics ahead of their mission and the welfare of women. They poked the hornet's nest and got stung.

Actually I don't think this is reaction to their politics. What seems to actually happened is the hoo-hah last year brought to light how Komen actually works. Which is, specifically, to pay their top execs upwards of $500K per year and allocate massive funding for money raising activities that pay the privileged friends-of-the-organization tons of money.

Yeah they do fund actual research and services but I think a lot of people started to realize that it looked a lot like a scam operation going on. And once they started lying their heads off about what they were doing a lot of otherwise sympathetic sources got turned off and lost confidence and trust.

In other words, multiple self inflicted wounds with a heaping side of arrogance.

That's what you get for politicizing your money laundering, Komen for the Cure.

This.

Cancer sucks but so does Komen, for many MANY reasons before this whole Planned Parenthood thing. That mindset is what caused the PP thing in the first place, though (read: preventing/curing cancer, not *really* what we're about).

I'm sure there are awesome people in the organization who are trying their best to make a difference and who are taking a beating.

And I hope they find somewhere better with a truer sense of purpose.

/Been donating small amounts to PP for years, but they got a larger check this year
//helped me out when I needed BC on credit for a few months (not like it matters, but ovarian cysts so it wasn't as simple as "don't f--k for awhile"), helped out guy friends with cheap STD screenings, and it was the only place I could take a friend who needed Plan B on a Sunday before it was BTC... I could go on

Monkeyhouse Zendo: Jim_Callahan: Or, rather, they're ditching it because it's a "charity" only in the strictest technical sense, and has lobbied the government repeatedly for the exact opposite of its ostensible reason for existence. The reasons it can only be described as a "charity" when sarcasm quotes are used are technically politically motivated, though, so still valid.

There are a whole host of things that are wrong with Komen but most people didn't have insight into the organization until the media started taking a closer look following the politically motivated decision to defund breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood. If they'd stayed more politically neutral they could have flow under most people's radar for years as the "breast cancer people". It's partly political backlash and partly people becoming aware the it was being run by and for a bunch of grifters.

I remember some wtf articles when everything started having a damn pink ribbon, and enough other alarms raised that I didn't trust them before this PP kerfuflle.

But this was the straw that broke the camels back for sure.

THIS They spend more on suing companies for using names similar to "for the cure" than they do funding research for metastatic breast cancer ie what Susan Komen died from.

The American Cancer Society pegs 5-year relative survival at 99% for prostate, 89% for breast. Prostate cancer is more treatable today. But they should be throwing their money at lung and pancreatic cancers.
