I'm curious as to how you came up with that list, because many of the items on it are just not believable. Are you seriously claiming that Muslims invented bathing, to just pick one example? Nobody thought of bathing before ~600 CE?

Mmmm...still a bit iffy. Yeah, bad choice to "friend" current students (I teach high school and don't even go there). But I still think that in our nation you're entitled to your opinion. If he lets it impact the way he teaches his students in any negative way, then by all means crucify the guy, but I've never been a big fan of the whole "teachers need to be impeccable beings with no perceptible flaws" argument that seems to prevail in this country. Teachers are humans (at least until the Republicans can find a way to profit from robotic ones).

SubBass49: should I get in trouble?

Nope, but parents do have a right to move students from your classroom based on those beliefs being public. Considering he has students friended on Facebook and made this post, I would not keep a child in the class. I have done controversial projects and made controversial statements, and I accept the consequences. However, I make sure my parents are informed, and student comfort in the environment and ability to disagree with me is paramount.

You drive a good point. I wonder though, should he have friended his students?
Is that wise?

Big Bang theory
Genetics
Hospitals and medical science...

Don't forget about the aqueducts and the road!

(not joking; the Renaissance was set into motion by the well-educated clergy in Italy who supported the digging into the ancient past and eventually decided they would exceed the glories of ancient Rome... in the name of God, of course.)

"All this talk in the news about gay marriage recently has finally driven me to write. Gay marriage is wrong because homosexuality is wrong. The Bible clearly states it is sin. Now I do not claim it to be a sin any worse than other sins.

Folks I am willing to admit that my depravity is just as great as anyone else's, and without Christ I'd be destined for hell, if not for the undeserved grace of God.

I'm not condemning gay marriage because I hate gay people. I am doing it because those who embrace it will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. And I desire that for no one."
--- --- ---

So he says being gay is a sin but everyone, even he himself, is a sinner but if gays get equal treatment under the law, they'll never get to go to heaven?

I'm sure this guy is a great farking teacher.

Well of course I agree with that, and frankly I don't much care that he's a bigoted asshole (though it would be nice if he weren't). But having current students as facebook friends AND posting a bigoted message for them to see leads me to believe he has pretty bad judgment.

There was a recent NPR show about the issue of teachers using social media, and it was pretty interesting... can't remember which one though. TOTN maybe?

Agreed, and that's where I fault him. He has a right to spew whatever craap he wants on his FB page, but making it accessible to his students seems irresponsible. What urns me about this is not his opinion, I could give a flap, it's that he justifies his actions based on his personal belief system, regardless of the consequences.
It's arrogant.

Duyogurt: I am beginning to wonder if this level of bigotry is only more widely known about because of the internet age or that religious zealots are becoming more vocal about their selective beliefs.

The internet is a double edge sword: it allows easier access to find citations and facts to debunk bullshiat, but on the other hand, it makes it easier for nutcases to spread that bullshiat.

The only reason it's an issue though is his choice of career. Teachers have faced all kinds of persecution based on their personal beliefs and this bothers me greatly. Any Joe-Shmoe could post exactly what he did and be considered a pillar of their community. A teacher does it and they're ready to be run out of town on a rail.

It was a Muslim who realized that light ENTERS our eyes, unlike the Greeks who thought we EMITTED rays, and so invented a camera from this discovery.

It was a Muslim who first tried to FLY in 852, even though it is the Wright Brothers who have taken the credit.

It was a Muslim by the name of Jabir ibn Hayyan who was known as the founder of modern Chemistry. He transformed alchemy into chemistry. He invented: distillation, purification, oxidation, evaporation, and filtration. He also discovered sulfuric and nitric acid.

It is a Muslim, by the name of Al-Jazari who is known as the father of robotics.

It was a Muslim who was the architect for Henry V's castle.

It was a Muslim who invented hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes, a technique still used today.

It was a Muslim who actually discovered inoculation, not Jenner and Pasteur to treat cowpox. The West just brought it over from Turkey

It was Muslims who contributed much to mathematics like Algebra and Trigonometry, which wa ...

You sound Muslim.

Seriously, most of these "inventions and discoveries" are building off of (or blatantly ripping off) knowledge from the Greeks and the Indians and the Babylonians and the Persians and the Chinese and the Romans and pretty much everyone who existed before Islam was a thing (including Christians)

In the same vein, many inventions and discoveries of the current day are based on things in your list. If you're going to claim all these things for Muslims, then the Christians get to claim things like the transistor, and penicillin, and American football, and calculus, and the whole thing turns into a silly propaganda slapfight.

/And since Muhammad based his religion off of Judaism and Christianity, you could claim that the whole of Islam was invented by a Pagan-Christian-Jew, so the transitive property gives them credit.

I'm not really trying hard at all. If I were trying hard, I'd post some of the multiple news articles written in the past few years that details the firing or suspension of a teacher for expressing their personal beliefs on their own time. Sounds like you and intelligent thought have a difficult relationship. Hope you can work that out some day.

So now you're going to differentiate what happens outside the classroom with what happens inside? Wow. What do you tell your students when they ask you why they need to learn all the crap you teach? When my students ask me, I tell them it will help them in the real world and in their daily lives. Apparently your lessons are only relevant to inside the classroom.

It really sucks to be your students.

SubBass49: A teacher does it and they're ready to be run out of town on a rail.

See, I do agree with you, but my distinction is made between consequences to the teacher and parental rights over the education of their children. Nothing should happen to this teacher, but the parent should be able to move their children out of (or into, frankly) or at least have assurances the beliefs of this teacher are not entering the classroom, when resources prohibit this which they inevitably do, either negatively or in lack of action to defend or support students who appear to be or who identify as homosexual. His comment should not be ignored, but his comment should not see him fired, suspended, etc..

I think privacy should be respected for everyone. As long as your work and private life are kept as separate as possible, employers shouldn't snoop around on facebook and you shouldn't talk about work on facebook.

Didn't schools kinda start this anyway by deciding to start suspending students if they didn't like something the student did in their free time that they posted to facebook?

If students can be suspended for what they say on facebook, shouldn't teachers be subject to the same rules?

BONG HiTS 4 JESUS!

Islamic culture in the (European) Middle Ages preserved much knowledge than had been lost in Europe and added to it with imported knowledge as well as advances made in the Muslim world, which went through a flowering of advancement in the 1000s to 1500s.

It was a lucky survival, as this information entered (or re-entered) Europe as the Renaissance began, greatly advancing and amplifying what had survived the systematic destruction of ancient knowledge by the early Christian church.

That's really obtuse. What you refuse to recognize is the speech has gone into legislation. It's one thing to have an opinion, it's quite another to impose that opinion upon the masses via legislation, most particularly a religiously based opinion.
Liberals and Progressives today see that, how can you not with all of the bills being passed to shut down PP and restrict women's rights and discriminate against the gay community?

You don't give a rats ass because you are a judgmental binary thinking Asshat.
That is all.
