Yea, because you couldn't do the exact same slideshow about Gen Xers who got laid off 10 years ago after the dot-com bust and then got laid off again in the past few years. And you surely couldn't make a slideshow like that about the current Baby Boomers that got laid off and can't find jobs because they're too old.

In many states it is required. When you get your bachelor's degree and obtain your teaching certificate it is only good for so many years (usually 5-10) At the end of that time you need a Master's degree (or equivalent graduate credits) to renew your certificate. No certificate, no job.

And I agree that education is a loser's field. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to go into education. You can't really make a living in that field any more because the requirements to keep your job outweigh the income (see: federal race to the top program in addition to cuts in most states of salaries and benefits)

If you or someone you know wants to go into education - tell them no. They are better off working at McDonalds (and sadly that isn't hyperbole).

You get a higher salary if you have a masters degree. Plus, if you don't find a job the first year out of school., getting the masters buys you some time until the county can raise taxes on landowners.

It does appear to be a bit of cock though. In my county, you MUST get a masters degree after a certain number of years, or your license expires.

Pay scales can vary pretty heavily depending on the degree you have (for example, in Seattle having a masters seems to be worth both about $7,000 a year in starting salary and a fair amount more in terms of having your salary cap out higher). Even with the loans I think she'll come out ahead in the long run if she stays long enough.

Pffft. It's Hazen High in Renton. The job market consists of tweaker, gangster, hooker, street-corner window-washer, dealer, pusher, addict, thief, bum, and city council member. The average worker has three jobs in a 30-yr career. In this economic market, it's six, with long periods of bumming in between. Be ready to change jobs often, 'cause yer gonna have to.

I'm retired and not in this mess, but I've got a word for ya. If you trust the company to provide work and maintain your retirement fund, yer gonna be broke at 60yo. Unless you control your retirement funds, your later years are gonna suck. Get an IRA and continue to donate monthly. Add a college fund for each kid +1 (It'll come in handy, you'll see.) Make sure your spouse has a retirement fund of their own 'cause two can't live as cheaply as one, no matter what she says. ...And be sure to have a $10K along with the above if ya wanna live good.

Why do you get that Masters in Education to teach math? How about studying math and then you won't have to have your students' parents explain to you why your assignment could not be done using what is included in the 7th grade text book, as well as explain the concepts you don't quite understand yourself.
