EMPTY NET KINGS

2012-05-20 05:46:00 PM
2 goal lead, empty net.... time for Smith to get a goal here

2012-05-20 05:46:20 PM
those long passes by goalies rarely ever lead to a scoring opportunity, and because its generally a line change, the team isnt prepared to enter the zone, ultimately losing possession of the puck.

2012-05-20 05:46:25 PM
I don't agree with this Empty Net. O_o

Does it seem like LA doesn't give a shiat?

2012-05-20 05:47:39 PM
It'd be hilarious if the Kings get a PP goal in this last 6.5 seconds...

2012-05-20 05:47:46 PM
Ah well, good for the Coyotes. Though being beaten at home again on Tuesday is going to hurt. I can't imagine the Kings are going to suck as much as they did today.

Well the Kings were flat and lacked energy. Kinda boring game except for a few instances. Bah.

L.A has had way more chances to score than Phoenix
Smith stole a game right when he had to

Either LA is gonna troll in Glendale or Yotes got their second wind.

I wasn't expecting...THIS!

eddievercetti: rickythepenguin: That little red wheel logo is seen far more than you'd think, but rarely do you see any other franchise. I'd say occasionally the Avs, the Ducks, but the overwheleimning presence is the Red Wings.

More Laker fans than Suns fans
More Steelers, Packers, and Cowboy fans than Card fans
More Yanks fans than D'Backs fans
More Wings fans than Yotes fans

People really like moving here, it was so peaceful 10 years ago.

A large part of the problem is that for some strange reason a hot desert isn't a traditional hockey market. That's not to say that a hockey team can't survive there (with modern HVAC, most anything is possible), but it does say that there won't be generations of fans (yet) with a local team's history to grow up with. Combine that with the retirement benefits that the location brings (weather & financial compared to where they are moving from) & you have a lot of people coming from places that already have a team. It's only logical that they root for their 'home' team (and yes I know, all of you already know & understand this - some lurkers though...)

With some good years & enough time I can see that turning around somewhat. It will never be anything like a traditional market has but it doesn't always have to be terrible.

2012-05-20 05:48:19 PM
Yay! Glad they didn't let themselves be swept and Smith got a shutout.

2012-05-20 05:48:23 PM
intelligent comment below: Kings look pretty awful when the team they play actually comes to the rink prepared. I expect to see them get steamrolled by who ever comes out of the East.

Lol, you and your ridiculous eastern superiority complex. You made that same dumb comment last thread too, git outta here with that BS.

Vangor: Not sure why, but I enjoy there being an actual home advantage in hockey. Every other sport talks about home field, but this is just the energy from the crowd. We have second positioning and last change.

I don't. In the nba, that usually translates to bullshiat.
I really don't see that happen in hockey.
It's a good thing

2012-05-20 05:48:38 PM
I don't think anyone was really awake for that game. Or at least it seemed like it.

darwinoid: rickythepenguin: eddievercetti: ytterbium: How far away is Glendale from Phoenix?

If you're lucky, half a hour.

it really isn't far, but the larger issue is when you have a 40+ home game season, if those games are sunday-thursday, it is a pain in the ass due to traffic. and from most metro phoenix suburbs, it is a haul.

ballpark estimates, accoungint for rush hour traffic:

scottsdale / tempe = 60 minutes
gilbert = 80
anthem = 30
"phoenix" = 30
chandler = 60
laveen = 30
glendale = 20
awahtukee = 80
gold canyon = 70

so if a game is friday or saturday, no worries. but that much of the season on a work night?

on the heels of the shot of James Gandolfini, "FUGGEDABOWWWWWW..."

Usually takes me ~75 minutes to get there and 45 minutes back. It's hell on a weekday/night.

I can see how going on a regular basis would be unfeasible. No public transit either, right?

I can catch a train here for $8 to downtown Chicago, then bus or cab it to the United Center.

Congrats to Smith. Not only did they beat the Kings juggernaut but did it with a shutout - his 3rd of the playoffs, all of which were on the road - nice.

Tomorrow night then, see you all in a day or so...

Thought because you always had a last possession whereas you can ruin offense possession? Don't think you can just gain possession of the ball in baseball.

Kings had PLENTY of scoring chances. They hit posts, Smith made some great saves.
They had less energy than previous games, but I don't think they played badly at all.

Whatever, though, it's probably good for them to figure out they can lose a game.

darwinoid: I can't imagine the Kings are going to suck as much as they did today.

like i said above, they looked disinterested.

i think the forechecking needs to improve, the neutral zone trap was effective, and to combat the Yotes' speed at the wings, they need to play with puck discipline and kill the power play. penalties remain an issue but if they can better manage their shifts (looking at you, Kopitar, you didn't know your substitution patterns several times, farkstain) to counter the Yotes, this could get interesting.

non-arizonans, you cannot understand how colossaly dumb it was to build an NHL arena where they did.

I always thought it was dumb to begin with to keep them there when moving them to a legit hockey city could double their profits

Define "legit hockey city"

Let's say you're in extra innings. Visiting team goes first, and gets a lead-off triple. What do you do? Do you go for a sac fly, surrendering an out to get the run? Probably, but it's hard to know if that's a good idea. Maybe you'll wish you had that out to help you get more runs.
On the other hand, home team gets a lead-off triple. If the visiting team got none, you sac fly all damn day, because one run and the game is over, you win. If the visiting team got two, you probably don't, because one run isn't enough, and your outs are too valuable to give away like that.

In college football, it's basically the same. First team gets to 3rd and 5 at the 20. What play do you call? Play it safe and then kick a field goal? Go for the big play?
The second team knows exactly what they have to do in such a situation. If the first team got 0, then you play it safe and set up for the field goal (maybe even kick it on 3rd down to make sure you're protected from a fumbled snap). If the first team got 7, you know you have to get the first down, and kicking the field goal never comes into it.
