Marilyn Monroe thread!

2012-05-20 12:11:49 AM
Hijacking the Monroe thread for a moment.

I just finished the alternative history novel 'Memoirs of John F. Kennedy' and really enjoyed it. It's a what if novel about what could have happened if JFK survived the assassination in Dallas. It does have a kind of Liberal circlejerk feel to it at times, but it was still well done.

Jackie and Marilyn would have been the affair I wanted to see.

It had to be better than Stephen King's "11/22/63". I want those 800 pages back.

So they had cured Addison's and Parkinson's in that universe?

on the day before her death in August, 1962 - she called to tell the President she had aborted his baby.

Admitting this to the second most powerful Catholic in the world might not have been the brightest idea, Norma.

I've got this great story about Franklin Pierce and James K. Polk making Harriet Beecher Stowe airtight while Millard Fillmore stood masturbating in the corner screaming "I KNOW NOTHING!".

Maybe I'll write a book.

If he had survived it, it wouldn't have been an assassination. At least not of him.

It is consistent wit what we know about Jackie Kennedy - she allowed JFK to have his mistresses as long as they weren't public (didn't last long).

Anyone know if Marilyn Monroe was actually a good actress?

In Rainbow's End, the biographer also claims Monroe had lesbian trysts with Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Taylor

If anyone needs me, I'll be in my bunk.

Pretty much this. Lots of stuff in that article which cannot be proven outside of "a source with inside knowledge claims...". Almost always ends up being someone who's ever so loosely connected to the involved parties, likely in need of some cash, and so they concoct a story which sounds quasi authentic to the general public but would have been readily dismissed by the named parties were they still alive.

Reminds me a lot of junior high. Seems a lot of people don't mature much beyond that age.

redmond24: Anyone know if Marilyn Monroe was actually a good actress?

She really wanted to be (going so far as to study under Lee Strasberg (one of the principal architects of method acting) at the Actor's Studio) and her later work shows a definite improvement.

In short, no but she could have been had she lived long enough.

Ah, but she was approaching middle age, and to be honest, her career was based on her looks. Marilyn wasn't Lucille Ball, who could keep on going into her 60s because she was funny.

Even if Marilyn had become a very good actress by the time she had hit her 40s, would the producers have hired her after her looks had faded a bit? Even today, it's hard for all but a few older actresses to get major work,.

It's sad, but Marilyn's legacy and cultural impact would not have anywhere near what it is had she lived to a ripe old age. See also James Dean, JFK.

President and his brother a secret, but the biographer alleges the actress had one more big surprise for Kennedy on the day before her death in August, 1962 - she called to tell the President she had aborted his baby.

I'm sure those two events were unrelated....

I've never really understood her appeal. There's hundreds of young actresses in Hollywood these days that I would say are way better looking than her, maybe women were just uglier back then.

Not to be a downer, but I heard a historian point out that it is actually possible to PROVE that Marilyn and Jack never had an affair.

Both their lives are so well documented that you can show that they were only within 1000 miles of each other on two occasions and one or the other is accounted for every minute of those times.

Now BOBBY is a different story.

It's BECAUSE there are hundreds of hotter young actresses in Hollywood these days.

The sheer small total number of films in Marilyn's day meant that the stars of those films became Icons -- she was one of only a few women in that era marketed to the entire country's population as a sexual being.

The only reason for her current appeal is the circumstance of her life in that period of history.

Now there are more total video dramatic and comedic programs released every day than in the entire years of Marilyn's career (not to mention porn) -- there can never again be a "movie star" the way there were when 100 films per year were the total entertainment seen by the entire world.

Too funny. I was given that book as a Christmas gift. I finally picked it up about two weeks ago. I went through about 110 pages (where my bookmark sits) and put it down, never compelled to pick it up again. Thanks for sharing, now I know why.

Also re: the article - it's easy to write stories about MM, JFK, Bobby, Jackie O. when they are all dead. Sheesh.

Maybe I shouldn't have used today's actresses as an example. I wasn't really talking about her stardom, I was simply talking about her looks. I just never thought she was that good looking compared to what you see today. That's why I made the statement that maybe women were just uglier back then.

Spoilers

He was still shot in the book, just managed to survive. The national backlash against Dallas and the hate that city was spewing was pinned on Republicans and the extremism they were spewing. Couple that with people simply wanting to support the president and he ended up winning in a landslide. The book was really well done and was extremely historically plausible.

I don't see that as realistic though. Oswald was an avowed Communist and most of the vitriol came from Southern Democrats, so unless they change the shooter and environment it's hard to hang the blame on the Republicans.

When Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell were putting their hand and foot prints into cement in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater to promote their movie 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', Marilyn suggested to Jane that she press her big breasts into the cement because they were what she was best known for. Jane then said back to Marilyn that maybe she should hike up her skirt and press the part that she was most famous for into the cement.
