Indeed. I am certain this is the real reason he was arrested.

A search warrant and weeks of investigation for a small timer with a quarter of bud on him and some paraphernalia. I'm sure it was worth every tax dollar spent.

So he got caught with envelopes and tape? The dreaded 50 count box of Glad freezer bags? The horror!

It means they charged him with absolutely everything they could think of in the hopes that at least one of them will stick, they are still considering additional charges or much more likely some perverted combination of the two.

I own some sandwich bags. I am now guilty of possession of materials used to package narcotics.

I thought the same thing... they went in the kitchen and got some sandwich bags and measuring cups, marked them "evidence", and then one cop turned to the other and said "sprinkle some crack on him Johnson, let's get out of here."

Oh, and I looked up Poe's Law because of this thread... fascinating stuff... and of course Poe's Law was fouunded in a debate with Creationists..

I know it says that in the article, but if he had a scale and weed he would have a distribution or intent to sell charge. As i recall it said only possession charges were made, something doesnt add up there is all im saying. Author made a mistake somewhere

I predict fine policing like this will help bust the murderous Mexican Cartels.

All we need to do is imprison everyone that that has 1/4oz of pot and a kitchen scale or even worse a pack of baggies.

Dear Coppers, if you seriously want to stop the illegal drug trade why don't you start investigating the crooked politicians, public officials and your on the take brother law enforcement personnel that permit the trade to thrive?

Sigh, such things are unlikely to occur while it's so much easier just to bust some end user somewhere then crow about a great victory in the war on drugs.

I'm far too lazy and sober to look it up, but there is some documented proof that Washington and Jefferson would make gifts of smallish boxes of 'indian hemp' to each other on their social visits. It's hard to believe that they were merely comparing their industrial hemp stocks in such a fashion.

Anything cops do to bust or otherwise harass people whose only "crime" is growing or selling pot is time wasted. Burglaries, rapes, etc. are going on in major cities all the time, and what do the cops do? Stake out some small time dealer who can't even maintain a good inventory.

Nothing the cops do will keep those who want pot from having access to it. They should quit wasting time and go after people who really deserve jail time.

I don't doubt that. I wouldn't even be surprised to find out that Lincoln burned a few. Just makes me like him more.

I just am highly suspicious of quotes from iconic figures which strongly -- and conveniently -- support one side or the other on any issue. You may recall a quote from Hitler making the rounds in which he celebrated gun control, which was spread about with abandon by NRA types:

This year will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!

It was phony, but to this day hundreds of thousands of mouth-breathing, toothless fools cite it.

Ziploc baggies? Possibly one of those things that vacuum seal food? What else do people use to package weed? They don't mean shiat, and this guy will ultimately get very minor convictions- minor possession. Notice he's being "tentatively" charged; they want to get him for more but they know they won't. He's probably a little smarter than them and prepared for this eventuality. Maybe they arrested one of his friends and tried to get him to testify against this "dealer", and he refused; my father used to deal drugs when I was a kid and that happened to him once. His best friend and sometime partner got arrested and they offered to let him off if he'd finger my dad in court, but he refused and told my dad about it when he visited him in jail. My dad shut down everything and they never got him for shiat, but his friend did three years in prison. Could be something along those lines.

Yup, always amazes me that line of reasoning. "Drugs are harmful (the propaganda says so!) and therefore the war on drugs must be good!"

Even if you think drugs are the worstest, most evilest scourge on mankind evar*, you should hate the war on drugs. The ongoing prohibition and enforcement actions around it just end up sending ever more money to criminals, while ensuring that ordinary users don't know what they're getting or what's mixed with it and are more likely to be harmed as a result. It causes so much more harm than it prevents that it's not funny, and it is extremely expensive.

(*as an aside, the right answer to "what is the worstest, most evilest scourge on mankind evar?" is "politicians and other powerbrokers".)

Actually, no one has ever gotten high on weed and then had an accident. They are always on something else, like booze. If anything, that proves that being high on only weed makes it IMPOSSIBLE TO CRASH! We should make it mandatory.

Actual felony charges must be brought by a grand jury or, in most states, a charging document signed by a prosecuting attorney. Its a 6th amendment thing.

With lesser crimes, misdemeanors (infractions) it varies by state. In Missouri even our uniform traffic ticket form has a place for the prosecuting attorney to sign because only the prosecutor can bring charges. In Tennessee the police officer actually brings traffic ticket charges so its like small claims or landlord/tenant court.

Did it ever occur to y'all that these "baggies" of which you speak end up suffocating baby bottle-nosed dolphins in the world's oceans because it takes them about a gazillion metalunar time units to decompose, and that such polymers naturally seek out saline when set free in the landfills?

At the very least, wrap the stuff up with butcher paper and twine.

And yes, mary jane is a gateway drug. There's a big thing about it you can read at the big arch in St. Louis, I think. next to the riverboat casinos that ain't there no more.

I remember a show I used to watch called Dallas SWAT. This was almost a regular occurrence on that show.

They would spend a month or so building their case, then once they were ready they would roll up with several SWAT vehicles and 20 or more personnel, position themselves front and back of the house. They would execute these no knock search warrants, basically bashing down the doors/windows to make their entrance. Search the place for a couple of hours and all they would find was some rolling papers, a couple roaches and maybe a flake or two of pot. It was embarrassing. Our tax dollars at work people.
