Why would the Fire Department be responsible for this? It's 20' up, not 120'. You don't need any training to go get a 25' ladder.

I'd have thrown them a rope. You can get up there by yourselves, figure out a way to get down COLLEGE STUDENTS.

2012-05-19 11:19:53 PM
Why is this surprising. College students are always finding ways to get themselves into predicaments that they want someone else to get them out of.

He does have somewhat of a point, but not much. I bet he uses that W. as a first initial so nobody knows his real first name is Francis.

If there had been, we'd have been told repeatedly.

I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT for a dozen years or so. To be honest, about 80% of the calls I went on for each, were a direct result of a bad decision, or a series of bad decisions. Sometimes, it came down to "Wow, shiat happens", but almost always, it was "Well, you dumb son of a biatch, what did you THINK was going to happen?"

After a while, the dumb takes a toll. I totally understand where the Chief is coming from.

Hampshire, the college with no grading system. I say leave them up there and feed the crows in a week or see if they can get down without calling their helicopter parents.

This.

There's an age limit beyond which your tolerance for "I wanted to see what it looked like up there" erodes very very quickly. Usually it's about two or three. After that, you kick their ass off the roof, saying "It looks like that, dummy."

Well....they don't make 25' ladders here. However there are 24' and 28's and even bigger. But it really comes down to fear. Some people can walk down a roof right onto a ladder, but a lot cannot. I do it and my balls shrivel every time. They put themselves in a stupid spot and likely will get a bill. The way it is these days.

Once a cat is able to apply for and receive a student loan, I'm sure he will - until then, though, it's entirely appropriate to bill idiots who are, apparently, able to apply for and receive a student loan.

WTF? Stick a plastic pool below the roof and send up a bottle of Tequila and a dare. Problem solved.

The problem with this thought process, is while people like me are having to get these idiots off the roof, at the same time, a call comes in for someone, we'll say for instance, one of your family in cardiac arrest, and now I have a much longer response time because I was getting 3 drunk idiots off the roof. Now you want to sue to department for not getting your family help in time. Meanwhile, we should quit our biatching about being called to dumb calls. kk

its not about playing cards and taking naps, its about getting help to the people that really need it, as Doglover said, they got up there, they can get back down.

I heard a call in my area the other day for a sick subject, patient was located in her car, she was a block away from the hospital. They had to go halfway across town to get her, to take her one block. But, thats ok right, cause she was sick, and she called 911, so we should just do our job, and stop biatchin.. LOL... good luck with that.

Hindsight is 20/20. IMO, I don't want my local response based on some sort of flow-chart no matter how asinine. Every town has an Otis or two or a cat in a tree or a flooded basement or CO or whatever.

Sounds like we could use a general "non-emergency response" service. You lock your keys in the car or get stuck on the roof... you aren't going to die but you need help soonish. And there would be a fee.

They couldn't drop down 20' on their own without a ladder?
I used to jump off the school roof all the time, easily 20'.

Job security. Sure they're a bunch of dumbasses, but the local city bonds and home valuation taxes are paying you to pluck stupid people off roofs. Go with it man.

You chose a career as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Their job is to save people. Usually from themselves.

Didn't like dealing with these dumb sons of biatches? Huh. Sounds like you made a bad career decision. What did you think was going to happen?

I think we are all missing the bigger picture here...its Hampshire College. Odds are they were a) stoned b) tripping or c) on any combo of drugs. The fire chief should have just left them there, IMHO. Tell them to call their trustees instead. !@$&* Trust fund hippies.

Then I guarantee you're heading there anyways.

I'm of two frames of thought.

Stupid college kids. But I was one once. I could see myself, walking home after the bars closed, and my buddies doing this. What a great story that they'll always look back on and laugh about how stupid they were.

But if I did do this in college, I sure as heck wouldn't have called the authorities. Not cool. A community resource that shouldn't be abused like this. My university had it's own fire department. I assume their job deals with alcohol poisoning, suicide attempts, and other young person type emergencies but mainly rescuing stupid kids. I would have slept up there until the walk of shames began the next morning and could get my buddy the nerd who was smart enough not to come out with us.

Somewhere on the older Intertubes there was an audio of Burning Man security answering a phone: We are not here to prevent stupid. However, if stupid happens we will respond.
Or something in that vein.

Don't do that shiat drunk. I've climbed 250 foot tall trees (and that actually makes me a rookie) as a kid and got stuck. You hung up there when you were 11 because the asskicking was about to come. The Fire department would come to save your ass because that's what they do. I didn't have to get plucked out of a tree, I was told "You got up there, you get down"

Thankfully for the rest of Earth and Fark, I haven't climbed that high when hammered. That takes way too much work. The effects of Gravity hurt like hell.

Firefighters are paid so much in Amherst, the city can't afford to fully staff the department, but the fire chief says kids are the ones wasting money. I think we have a good idea who might be costing the city more money, some kids' prank, or the fire department, but you just go ahead and be the big man, chief Nelson.

I remember doing that at one of my brother's baseball games. Family went, but I'm not a sports fan, so I had to entertain myself. Found a really tall tree, so I climbed that shiat up to the twigs. A couple hundred feet up, my parents spotted me and started freaking out. Pff.
