skullkrusher: because gay marriage is a greater threat to America than Al Qaeda, economic instability and bronies combined, subby. That's why.

Uhm... so I've heard.

When I see that graph, part of me cheers...and, another part of me thinks, "why should that matter? Rights shouldn't be subject to popular opinion."

Then a third part of me says, "stop being idealistic. You live in the real world; there's a reason civil rights for black Americans lagged more than a century behind the laws and Amendments that formally recognized those rights."

Then a fourth part of me says, "shut up, all you guys. I'm trying to sleep."

Dwight_Yeast: As I pointed already, Obama's not going to lose any voters over his stance on gay marriage. African Americans who voted for the NC amendment will still vote for Obama in November, for instance. Why? because blacks disproportionately vote for black candidates and because they're no so crazy as to vote for the other guy.

Why oh why can't black and Hispanic Christians be single issue voters, like the white ones are? It's not fair.

*Republican pout*

Dwight_Yeast: If he were running against a traditional social conservative, this would be a valid problem. But the Mitt Romney who was governor of Massachusetts was politically to the Left of Obama. He supported gay marriage. He pushed for state-wide universal healthcare.

He banned assault weapons too. Mitt Romney, Republican Gun Grabber.

Rights aren't. Unfortunately, social recognition of rights, is.

Oxygen_Thief: If was going to spin this way I would go with it violates the establishment clause, because it attempts to codify or give extra extra protections to a singular religious view.

That would be more exact legal terminology, yes.

Aldon: The problem is the younger generation either doesn't get excited enough about this issue to vote or they lie to poll-takers and vote against gay marriage.

That younger voters are less likely to vote is only a slight factor in the overall trend. They continue getting more likely as they continue getting older -- and individual age brackets tend to get more tolerant over time.

Aldon: Pretty much every time gay marriage goes up for a popular vote it loses, even in my very blue state of California.

So far, this is true. And gay marriage opponents harp on this. However, national attitudes are changing incredibly rapidly, and most of those votes were early on in the shift -- well before the national tipping point occurred, when polls went from net disapprove to net approve. The 2008 California Prop 8 vote, for example, had 4.5% approval-over-disapproval margin, at a time when the country was polling about 53-43 opposed to gay marriage. It's now polling more like 51-47 in favor, a shift of some ten-plus points net.

Which raises some interesting questions about what might happen if the California experiment gets a re-run.

Aldon: Did you see that NC voted in a restrictive state constitutional amendment by a huge margin just a few weeks ago?

Yes. With a margin approximately in the range projected for the linear model -- though it may be due in part to the confusion about the amendment's impact on civil unions.

Aldon: This is probably a losing issue for Obama (for this election anyway) no matter what the polls say so don't get too smug about it.

Actually, it looks likely to be near neutral.

Rapmaster2000: Only gay people ask questions. You're not gay, are you?

You sound like you're hopeful and cruising.

So do you have some sort of alert system that notifies you of these threads so you can jump in?

Because if gay marriages are legitimate, heterosexual marriage will be outlawed. And you'll be forced to take a same-sex spouse at gunpoint. In fact, you may have to take two or three.

Wading into the gay marriage debate

What the hell are you talking about, "wading into"? Republicans are the only reason there even IS a gay marriage debate.
