I was so amused by the people who whined about Eddard Stark's death on Game of Thrones. As someone who's read the book, if that death upset you, you really aren't going to be able to handle the rest of it. George RR Martin kills characters without remorse, and often in completely unexpected places (like suddenly in the middle of a book)

TV has needed to shock people to garner ratings ever since Mary Crosby's character shot JR. Everything has become a soap opera in the race for ratings. And become more stupid in the process. Most of those deaths were because the actor wanted to move on to do other things. Or the show runners wanted to get rid of the actor. It's all jumping the shark and sometimes the shark jumps higher. It's all just television anyway, nothing important.

No Henry Blake? I just assumed he would be #1, and he's not on the stupid list at all. Fail.

2012-05-19 11:54:05 AM
No Christine Chubbuck?

2012-05-19 12:26:25 PM

Abzzstain: No Henry Blake? I just assumed he would be #1, and he's not on the stupid list at all. Fail.

Also, no Edith Bunker. Double-fark this list.

Temescal: No Christine Chubbuck?

No R Budd Dwyer?

I hope Poochy makes it back to his home planet OK...

...Oh.

Omar is way too low and should easily be near the top.

On top of that they have Shaynes death from Walking Dead. The only shocking thing about that was how long it took them to finally off the prick.

I like how you went ALL THE WAY BACK to 1980 as the start of 'eliciting human response from organized drama.' A guy 60,000 years ago who just drew a vagina on the wall would like a word with you.

And to the article? fark you for reminding me that Jimmy Darmody is dead. I managed to block that memory from taking hold when I saw it happen.

Greys Anatomy is still on? I seriously had no idea...

2012-05-19 01:11:32 PM
Kenny from "South Park" ? Really ?

2012-05-19 01:11:32 PM
No Nate from Six Feet Under? For shame.

When was the maker of this list born, anyway? No Henry Blake, no Chuckles the Clown??

/I've only seen three of the shows on which those 27 deaths occured.

Meh. Everything that came after could never have the same shock value as the beNedding. Only thing Martin could do - once - was crank up the numbers.

This.

There's also nothing shocking about Adriana's death on The Sopranos.

Oh look, it's a list made by people who think nothing happened before 2000.

You know, some of this prose sounds very familiar. I swear this list was posted six months ago, and was almost exactly the same... [does google search for ew most shocking tv deaths] YUP.
June 2011, "Top 23". Greenlit here.
April 2011, "Top 22".
May 2010, "Top 20". Greenlit here.

Both previous greenlights covered the obvious M*A*S*H F*A*I*L in the first five posts.

Fark you, Entertainment Weekly. Fark you with Dexter's rusty knife.

Chucko the Clown finding out what killed the dinosaurs?

2012-05-19 01:17:39 PM
No Tara on Buffy? What the fark?

(That said, kudos for including Lucy on ER. The scene of Romano and Codray trying to revive her and Romano totally losing his shiat is simply heartrending.)

2012-05-19 01:18:01 PM
The most shocking video game character death? Roman Bellic, GTA IV

How about Dinosaurs? The entire farking planet.

I had no idea that show was still even on. Had a girlfriend back in 2007 that used to watch it, and it was one of the worst shows I'd ever seen. Can't believe it survived 6 more years.

Fano: Chucko the Clown finding out what killed the dinosaurs?

That took me a second and then I laughed way, way too hard.

"Does anyone here know how the dinosaurs died? Chucko does."

Lem's death on The Shield was very shocking

When Jack Bauer had to shoot Ryan Chappelle.. THAT was shocking
Also on 24 Michelle Dessler and Edgar Stiles deaths were shocking

Lionel Luthors death on Smallville shocked me at the time too
even though another dimension Lionel came back at the end

2012-05-19 01:22:28 PM
No Ana Lucia and Libby? That was a one-two punch. Sayid, Jin and Sun were not shocking. It was the next-to-last episode.

2012-05-19 01:24:32 PM
Who is supposed to read this article? Is it only aimed at people who have watched every episode of every television show ever? You can't even possibly know which shows have spoilers for them until you have it spoiled.

2012-05-19 01:24:34 PM
3. TERRY CROWLEY (Reed Diamond), The Shield (2002)

Still the best one on this list.

JosephFinn: No Tara on Buffy? What the fark?

(That said, kudos for including Lucy on ER. The scene of Romano and Codray trying to revive her and Romano totally losing his shiat is simply heartrending.)

Romano vs helicopter (BOTH times) was also incredibly shocking.

Most heartrendingly horrible and "NOOOOOOOOO" moment is Tara, without question.

ontariolightning: Also on 24 Michelle Dessler and Edgar Stiles deaths were shocking

Why couldn't Edgar just hold his breath for 25 minutes while highly poisonous gas is all around him just like Jack did?

2012-05-19 01:25:44 PM
Tom Shayes death on Damages shocked me, he was a great character

Keith Scotts death on One Tree Hill was like whaaat.. as was Marissa Coopers death on The O.C which ended up killing the show lolz

JosephFinn: No Tara on Buffy? What the fark?

I always thought Tara or Anya's death was far more shocking than Joyce's. I mean she did just have risky brain surgery and a number of other issues going on. Tara and Anya's deaths were more "Holy shiat wtf just happened!?"

whizbangthedirtfarmer: No Nate from Six Feet Under? For shame.

That was really sad more than shocking.. we all seen it coming

They put this list up months ago. They just added more recent ones toward the bottom.

I had the end of "Big Love" ruined for me when I saw online that Bill Hendrickson was shot.

But, the final season of the show was so damn boring, I kept hoping and waiting for him to be shot.

I don't do slideshows. Is Derek Reese in Number One?

I stopped watching after Hollis' arm got hacked off. Right then and there I knew the show had taken the sharp turn to Stupidville.

Wallace being murdered by his friends was the most shocking death for me
on The Wire

2012-05-19 01:34:40 PM
Does Tommy Cooper count?

2012-05-19 01:35:17 PM

Shane and his family.. that was the most uncomfortable moment for me on The Shield. Still haunts me.

2012-05-19 01:36:19 PM
1. should have been Chris Benoit killing his family and then himself

Rita being offed in Dexter, while a surprise, I disagree with the author a lot... i hated her character!

Never played the GTA series..... my nephews love that shiat, though.

Galuf. I was mad. At least they didn't pull an Aeris, though, and the coming of Krile prevented the use of the reset button.

Minwu. Again, I was mad. (And they need to bring the Muslim Mage back as a playable character.)

You younger kids have portal's companion cube. Me... Pipo. My roadie. My dawg. Fa life. I'd have rather rolled with him through the whole game than the chick who replaced him.

Who else.....

That was farking out of nowhere. Great scene. That show had so much potential, wonder how it would have fared without the writer's strike... (prob the same, but one can wonder).

Don't see the death of Paul Ballard in that list either...

We all hated her. We just liked seeing her naked.

I actually like her character on No Ordinary Family
