I still have friends in AZ.

I keep trying to get them to come out East.

THIS IS WHERE WE KEEP THE HISTORY.

2012-05-18 05:09:08 PM
Lots of old people in segregated (by age) communities, hell, they're cities actually.
Lots of Mormons in Northern AZ that are fairly remote, they can easily control their districts.
The concentrated, fairly liberal populations in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Tucson can't overcome them just yet. With California's economy and degrading quality of life and the economic upsurge in Phoenix, we are seeing an influx and a slow tilting to the center away from the older, conservative groups that used to run things with impunity. It's going to take a while. Unfortunately, when things start to get better everywhere else, the first thing that happens is that everyone gets the hell back out of Arizona and we go back to the right.

its like the GOP has become completely unhinged.

"But my responsibility as secretary of state is to make sure the ballots in Arizona are correct and that those people whose names are on the ballot have met the qualifications for the office they are seeking."

you're a moron and probably should be treated as such why do people keep voting for loud people no matter how idiotic they are?

2012-05-18 05:10:01 PM
The at-the-time republican governor of Hawaii confirmed Obama's birth certificate prior to the 2008 election.

That was the end of it for rational people.

2012-05-18 05:10:02 PM
Didn't Arizona pass a law explicitly stating that candidates had to release their long form birth certificates to qualify? Since Obama's done so, he's therefore met the legal requirement and anything this guy puts him through is illegal under due process, while at the same time not requiring the same of other candidates is illegal under the same law.

So, the AZ SoS may in fact be violating state law and potentially federal law if he doesn't put Obama on and/or doesn't have the long-forms of anyone he does allow on.

2012-05-18 05:10:03 PM

Millennium: what_now: "Or the other option would be I would ask all of candidates, including the president, maybe to submit a certified copy of their birth certificate. But I don't want to do that."

Of course not. The other candidates are not black.

To be fair, the FEC really should be getting this information from candidates. Part of the reason I found it so easy to dismiss the birthers' claims right from the start is that I assumed the FEC already did things like that. I only found out later that they don't, though by that time there was plenty of other reason to dismiss birthers as the racists and dupes of racists that they had become.

It will forever be a stain upon our history that this problem was brought up by the birthers as part of their transparent attempt to keep a black man from becoming President. But a broken clock is still right twice a day, and so in this and this alone they've got a point. There should be a process for this sort of thing.

Still no need to bring Presidential vetting to a state level, though. States should vet candidates for their own elected offices, but the Presidency is a federal office, so the FEC should have jurisdiction.

But at the same time, there is no national ballot for President. It's all handled on the state level.

Farty McPooPants: Unfortunately, when things start to get better everywhere else, the first thing that happens is that everyone gets the hell back out of Arizona and we go back to the right.

The state has grown so fast, that most people weren't here for the recall of a Governor, the forcing of another to resign, a Senator involved in the Keating savings and loan, a group of state legislators pulling an Alt Fuel scandal. On and on and these things aren't known by them. New people are told they live in a rugged place that should thumb its nose at the Feds Far Away and they somehow believe it. From within their Air Conditioned homes, watching TV.

2012-05-18 05:13:23 PM

Theaetetus: Guidette Frankentits: If he doesn't put Obama on the ballot, what can legally be done? Do the federal courts have to get involved? What if he still refuses, does the National Guard get called in?

My guess is yes, you'd get an immediate suit for an injunction and writ of mandamus filed in federal court based on equal protection and the right to vote, which would be granted. Arizona could appeal, but they'd lose. If they still refuse to put Obama on the ballot, at that point, criminal contempt provisions might apply, and U.S. Marshals could be sent in.
It wouldn't get that far.

But it would be absolutely fantasticly hilarious if it did.

The butthurt alone would keep me in stitches for weeks.

The_Great_Hambino: The sun in Hawaii is at a different level than in the continental US. I tan pretty easily and rarely ever burn (I know, CSB), but I had a terrible sun burn in Hawaii. It's like a completely different sun over there. It makes absolutely no sense, but

Hawaii is closer to the equator, and can be directly under the Sun in the summer (At 21 degrees latitude, it's slightly south of the Tropic of Cancer at 23 degrees). For example, New York is about 45 degrees latitude. The angle of the sun has a lot to do with how much you burn, as the UV rays are absorbed by atmosphere, and at angles less than 'straight up' there's more atmosphere to travel through.

We need a tag.

You see, here's the deal; Florida also has lots of wacky, crazy, scary, stupid, unbelievable and just invariably unique stories. Arizona only sucks. I say it doesn't deserve a tag for sucking so hard.

You've never been to Sedona.

BTW, I grew up there and might move back someday. I'm just glad I'm not there now.

I spent about 23 hours in Scottsdale and I'll never go back.

I want to visit but I fry in the sun. I'd have to be in long sleeve, pants, and a big hat with sunglasses the whole trip.

I do like their handling of this.

I was stationed there for several years. Get as much of a tan as you can before you go, stay on the windward sides of the islands when possible, and go to beaches with treelines.

Can we just give Arizona back to Mexico?

wickedgrin: Please don't let the non-stop fountain of shiat spewing from my state influence you into believing that these people represent the entire population of Arizona.

Oh, we don't think its the *entire* state but as with the recent NC apologists either there aren't that many of you to start with or your people don't bother to turn out to vote.

Arizona is a national embarrassment and its not our fault when some of the shiathole stink rubs off on you.

He's not doing this because he is racist or for political gains from his racist state. No he is doing this because he recieved 1,200 emails from concerned racists (from around the entire country).

Please Arizona, go a little bit blue in November or we may have to put you all in a nursing home for your own protection.

Nope.

Do it. DO IT. I DOUBLE DARE YOU.

Seriously. I've been saying since last year that Romney would make a string candidate. He's a shiat politician, but that doesn't mean he won't be a formidable candidate....... but this shiat? This shiat will sink the Republicans utterly.

I want the Republicans to lose utterly, spectacularly, as then maybe we'll finally be forced to look inwards and reform the party, and if they keep this birther shiat up it'll do it for sure.

hahah I think you're on to something. It may have something to do with the vastly different age demographics (lots of self-adsorbed, cranky, bigoted baby-boomers and many fewer young people) of today as opposed to 40 years ago. Old people should just shut up and watch Matlock and complain about minorities moving into their neighborhood, if they can't act like rational adults when it comes to politics.

I often wondered who watched Fox News, because even my conservative friends thought it was simply too mindnumbingly dumb, shrill, paranoid and hysterical to stomach. Where were they getting these ratings from? Then one day as I was visiting my (then living) grandmother who we had placed in an Alzheimer's assisted living faciltiy, I couldn't help but noticed that as I passed by the rooms with every open door Fox News was playing on every television.

Suddenly, Arizona began to make sense.

Holy h3ll you farkers are absolutely batshiat.

Ken Bennett is one of the most level headed people in politics. He does not crave the limelight or headlines.

The state requires for each election that documents are collected before they are placed on the ballot, as do most states. The State of Hawaii provides a mechanism for this to work. Love reading all the Liberal ButtHurt over the Birther issue

Amazed how many people have never gotten a passport, registered a kid for sports, registered yourself for certain things, (now) not getting a driver license, or a myriad of other things that require a Birth Cert

You need a Birth Certificate for those

But, hey, these are the same people that think Trayvon Martin is a 12 yr old virgin
