In the weeks since then, Bennett said, Hawaii officials have forced him to provide proof that he is who he says he is.

Awesome.

hahhahahahahhahahahhahaha!!

Hawaii should keep saying they aren't 100% clear on his identity, so they won't consider his request.

Bennett, the state's No. 2 elected official just below Gov. Jan Brewer (R), said his investigation isn't personal. He said the reason he started looking into it is because he got more than 1,200 emails asking him to do so after Arpaio's investigation came out

So if he got 1200 emails asking him to investigate Santa Claus he'd be on the next flight to the Arctic?

Sure.

"Or the other option would be I would ask all of candidates, including the president, maybe to submit a certified copy of their birth certificate. But I don't want to do that."

Of course not. The other candidates are not black.

I think I found the motive.

Meanwhile, Bennett is hoping to take Brewer's job when she becomes term limited in two years. The Arizona Capitol Times reported (paywall) earlier this week that he is already collecting signatures to get on the 2014 ballot for governor.

2012-05-18 01:42:53 PM
FTFA: Bennett said he was following the lead of the state's eccentric Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a fellow Republican who ordered an investigation into the president's birth certificate last year and concluded the document released by the White House is a forgery.

So ... the Secretary of State is following the lead of a county sheriff?

I'm not normally one for vast conspiracies, but after the events of this week it's pretty hard to believe that there isn't some kind of tactical effort by right-wing Republicans to start pushing the birther angle again.

I'm a fishbelly-pale ginger; I burn when people talk about the sun! I did just fine with a hat, sunglasses and some SPF-25.

Tropical forest sunlight is not like mountain, desert or prairie sunlight; it's hard to explain.

My theory is that it's not intended to "work" in the sense that they're trying to win people over to their side. It's that it's intended to throw some red meat to the birthbaggers who are outraged over having to vote for Mitt Romney, what with his space God and his Northeast elitist arugula-ass.

It's not possible for these people to make any bigger fools of themselves than they already have, so it's not like they'll be losing undecideds by pulling this sh*t. But they do risk losing the sizable birthbagger community if they don't address it.

2012-05-18 02:38:51 PM
This whole birther thing has given us perhaps the greatest example of moving the goal posts ever.

"Prove you were born in America!"
"Ok, here's my birth certificate"
"Ummmm... not good enough!"
"What the hell are you talking about? That's the real deal. That's a legal document. I can get a passport and a driver's license with that."
"This proves NOTHING! We want the LONG FORM!"
"Oh for fark's sake, here's that, too. Now will you shut up?"
"Never! We still have QUESTIONS!!"

Bennett, the state's No. 2 elected official just below Gov. Jan Brewer (R), said his investigation isn't personal. He said the reason he started looking into it is because he got more than 1,200 3 emails asking him to do so after Arpaio's investigation came out.

"I'm not a birther. I believe the president was born in Hawaii - or at least I hope he was," Bennett said on the show. "But my responsibility as secretary of state is to make sure the ballots in Arizona are correct and that those people whose names are on the ballot have met the qualifications for the office they are seeking."

This is probably more accurate. One of them was probably Constantin Querard. Another, Sheriff Joe. A third was probably Russell Pearce.

I wonder if this is part of the reason:

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who just recently filed the paperwork for an exploratory committee in the 2014 Arizona gubernatorial race, appears to be the latest Arizona politician to play to the "birther" crowd.

Here is my proposed solution to all of this. 1. Get rid of retirement communities. 2. Move elections for the state to July.

As Arizona's Secretary of State shouldn't he be preoccupied with coming up with "Color Charts" to post at every polling place in November?

Creamy White - You're All Right
Slightly Tan - Cast a Ballot, Man
Sorta Sepia - We'll Be Seein' Ya
Dusky Brown - Get Outa Town
Inky Black - SWARM! SWARM! OH MY GOD HE'S GOT A GUN!

He wants something more than a certified copy of a birth certificate, but he doesn't want to go so far as to ask for even just a certified copy of the birth certificate? By definition those impulses would be mutually exclusive.

stpauler: Let's all send him an email asking to prove Arpaio's country of origin. Apparently 1200 is the magic number, we farkers can do it.

In the interest of the current debate thread regarding the eligibility of our local and national elected officials, I thought some might appreciate the way I approached the issue: "It has come to my attention that there may be some question as to the national origin and legality status of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. As a duly elected state official with jurisdiction in this manner, I ask you to please investigate and verify the national origin and immigration/naturalization status of Mr. Arpaio, with a public release of your findings to the local news media. It is vitally important that our public officials can be verified as legitimate citizens of the United States."

Thank you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.

Of course it is. That way he can drag this out for as long as possible to help get free publicity for his upcoming run for governor.

The situation in a nutshell:

Imagine if I told you I had a copy of "Evil Dead 2" on DVD. You don't believe me. So I finally show you my copy of "Evil Dead 2," and you insist that it's fake. It must be some sort of Chinese bootleg version, something I downloaded from BitTorrent, or some other form of fakery.

So some independent third party comes out, verifies that my copy of "Evil Dead 2" is legit, and wonders why you would even question it in the first place. It's like a $5 DVD and it's not exactly rare. But you persist, and move the goalposts a little.

Now you're no longer interested in the DVD itself, but the receipt. That's the linchpin of this whole works now. Sure, it might be a legit DVD, can I provide proof that I actually purchased it?

Of course it does. ANYONE can get a certified copy of their birth certificate. The AZ Sec of State wants a video copy of the president's birth. Yep...a simple DVD copy of the president's birth. Once the president provides the blu-ray copy of the birth then he'll be put on the ballot. This will be finished up when the high-definition, 1080p blu-ray copy of the president's birth and affidavits by the doctor is presented. We can move on once the president presents the blu-ray, affidavit of the doctor and his mother, and a shrubbery. The issues will be brought up after the blu-ray, affidavits, and shrubbery are delivered AND the president cuts down the mightiest tree in the forest....with a herring.

Actually, I had a really great time when I lived in AZ in the late 90's. And AZ doesn't have pythons that explode when they eat alligators, like America's Wang does. I'll stick with FL on this one, although I wouldn't be sad to see OK get its own tag....

But again, these other places just don't have the depth of crazy or the virtual plethora of wacky happenings that Florida. Arguably the only other place that does have an equal amount of crazy is California but Florida beats CA out on the proportion of crazy to other articles. Fl has the densest crazy and I think has earned its tag many times over.
