Did Fark just gave me a popup for scorecard research....

2012-05-18 11:18:41 AM
I keep wondering what happens when a Kickstarter project gets funded, but still fails. Will everyone scream for their money back? I've been watching with some trepidation the project started by the Yogscast, who cashed in on their enormous fan base with a $250,000 funding goal to build their own video game, and got twice that in pledges. I love SImon and Lewis, but half a million dollars to an unproven game company to build a novelty? What can possiblie go wrong?

Not a game, but I came across this one last night. So much potential, abysmally done. The video is painful.

The developer's position it as a fun way to protect your family, but when buying a 12-gauge shotgun is one of the tasks, we're not so sure

Why would that be a task? Should that be a given that everyone has a gun or 20?

These games all appear to be terrible. The MMO one sounds astoundingly stupid because there are so many additional hurdles.

The MMO was being run by a game who had no experience making games, and want a new age lotto winner who could have just funded the game to begin with.

Basically, he had no idea what he was talking about.

Now, the Class of heros one was tragic, that game could have been fun, they just screwed up the kickstarter. you see, most 'special edition' psp games go for about $40 these days. To get a copy of the game in that kickstarted, you had to pledge at least $60.

Anything less then that, and no game for you, not even a digital copy. That's a very hard sell unless you are a major fan of the series. Most of the successful game kcikstarters have a much lower cost of entry, often about $15.

Toss on the fact it was a physical PSP game, and thus unplayable on a Vita, PSP go, etc, and it's even harder to justify the premium.

I've gotten in on 2. $15 is fine -- if I get the game, awesome. If I don't get the game, well, lesson learned. At $60 minimum though? Forget about it. Hopefully the companies going this route are learning from these missteps.

A plug for a current videogame Kickstarter: Word Realms

By the guys that make Kingdom of Loathing, it's a cartoon RPG with combat via Scrabble-type mechanics. The video is a hoot.

Maybe not all of them.
Gaijinworks was the Original Working Designs crew. They have a good trackrecord, but, I wonder if JRPG's generate that much interest anymore.

They do, but the PSP market is flooded with them. It's about the only thing that handheld did well, and one of the few reasons to pick one up.

On the home consoles, things were actually kind of sparse this gen in tems of RPG's. Only a handful of real standouts.

Drubell: 16 hours until point-and-click adventure goodness is finished, gogogogo

I have enjoyed point-and-click adventure games and I have lamented the dearth of them in the current (and previous) generations. Am I to assume that you endorse this project?

The linked project is headed by Jane Jensen, who created and designed the Gabriel Knight games. She's no rank amateur, and her reputation precedes her. Definitely worth backing.

Also, if you're a big fan of point and click, you'll want to back this one. Short summary, the 'Two Guys From Andromeda', Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy - creators of the Space Quest series - have reunited to do a new "spaceventure", as they call it. It's not a Space Quest game(they don't own or have access to the IP right now), but it will be done in the spirit of the Space Quest games. Take a look at the page, check out the early prototype, and throw them a few bucks.

I think the "problem" is that first person party based dungeon crawlers - always a bit of a niche - just absolutely flooded the market on handhelds. "Class of Heroes 2" in English would be cool, but come on......Persona, Persona 2, Wizardry: LoLS, Etrian Odyssey I, II, III, Dark Spire, Shin Megami Tensei IV.......there are probably a hundred more I am forgetting. It's not that it's a bad genre, but no one is really doing anything special with it (except maybe Etrian Odyssey.....which is why THAT GAME sells like crazy). So there's no damn reason for Class of Heroes 2.

......in Japan, I think there are already 5 Class of Heroes games anyway. What the hell?

//"Tumulus of Fen" on iPhone is awesome, by the way.

There's also the small problem that the game is coming out anyway, and the Kickstarter was just to make a super-ultra-mega-cool collectors edition with an art book and other useless tat*. I don't think anybody buys those things anyway, so it's no wonder it failed to reach its goal.

*nothing is obscure on Fark, right?

Yes, it's conveniently blocked on my Ghostery list :)

Kickstarter is cool but it's not going to do what really needs to be done - take the equity capital and traditional bank financing systems and turn them on their heads.

That game looks terrible. $100,000 for what appears to be a flash game? The gameplay doesn't even make sense.

Holy shiat, the Working Designs people? I need to go read up on Gaijinworks now. I loved those guys, they did amazing localization and goody packs for collector stuff.
I don't usually care when companies fall apart, but that one hit me hard.

It really seems the PSP and even the DS had more localized JRPGs released for them in any given month than PS3, 360, and Wii combined have ever had.
I don't torture myself by reading up on games that won't be translated, but I can't imagine it's that different in Japan.

Come on, guys, I don't care if you use DS-style graphics, just don't make me stare at a little screen for your game that takes 50+ hours to beat.
