Seems to me like if you can't do your job for months on end because of a voluntary condition you put yourself in you should be eligible to be fired. How hard is that to understand?

While pregnancy is volountary anything that requires months on end of leave is a complication that isn't voluntary.

Not to mention that asshole policies set in motion by conservatives nationwide are making pregnancy less and less voluntary.

GeeksAreMyPeeps: The article makes this situation reek of women who think they deserve special privileges because they're pregnant.

Yeah, fark those women who feel that just because they're continuing the species. I mean, it's not like 99% of the world's nations give paid maternity leave. This is just so ridiculous. If you get pregnant, we will fire you. If you use birth control, we will slander you as a slut. If you don't have sex, we will slander you as a prude.

Biv: HailRobonia: It's fine if a Native American names their kid Running Wolf, or a Chinese person name their offspring Pretty Flower, but god forbid a Black person name their child Shaneequa.

I wouldn't hire a Running Wolf or a Pretty Flower either. Or anyone named the freaked out names white hippies give their kids. Sorry. When it comes to employment, the book can, will and should be judged by it's cover. Dress well, use proper English, make sure you are clean, make sure your resume is clear and concise and don't have a stupid farking name.

Notably NOT mentioned in this diatribe:

Make sure your business has a very large nest egg for the inevitable EEOC suit that will happen when, say, you refuse to hire Shaniqua or Kai-lan or Running Wolf based on the name--because, you see, certain names (as noted in this thread) do tend to be tied with certain cultural groups, and more than a few of these are considered protected classes under federal and state civil rights laws.

(Of note--these protected groups even include reasons someone might have an Odd Name completely aside from belonging to a certain race or national origin. A biggie is religion--oh yes, religion is a protected class, too, and a common reason why people might have unusual names like Moshe or Singh (fun fact: every Sikh male has this last name or a variation of it) or...yes...Running Wolf or Pretty Flower. Some states also prohibit discriminating against national origin. Pretty much denying employment to any of the above based on a "weird name" WILL open you up for an EEOC lawsuit if the person can prove their "weird name" is linked to being in a protected group.)

In other words--if you refuse to hire someone based on their name alone, you're pretty much not only opening your company up to federal UWIA (Unsolicited Weeners In...well, you know), but you're all but spreading your cheeks and telling them "Fark the lube, go in dry".

Britney Spear's Speculum: wildcardjack: I don't know if someone classed as a trainee is protected by the family leave act from a decade or so ago.

That's what I was thinking. My guess is that they were probationary trainees and that being pregnant was a 'violation' of that probation. Clearly the commission sided with them so I'm guessing something to that affect is what happened.

My GF is preggers and is a 911 Operator. However, she has already been there for 5+ years. She was training before she got preggers but had to stop, due to the strain it put on scheduling and her. You have to train for up to a year, each, in separate areas (fire, medical, dispatch) before you can even start taking specific calls. I'm going to play the Devil's Advocate here and say this: If they were in a probationary period and are not represented by a union, then I can understand why the women were let go. You have to train for a long time before you can operate the lines. If they go out on FMLA, they have to start training all over again when they come back! My GF was almost a year into dispatch training. She got preggers, had to stop, and now she will have to train for a year all over again.

So now you have two women, whom add to the company's E.O. minority requirements, whom spent who knows how long training, who are going to be out for up to three months standard (FMLA is up to 12 weeks), and whom are going to need to start training from the beginning once they come back. Lets say that's six months initial training, three months gone and another 12 back in training again. So, 21 months of them not being able to perform their core role as a call-taker. All the while they are gone, the call center cannot fill their minority requirement, too. Essentially, they are stuck with two employees whom might as well be two bags of sand in two chairs for almost two years...not taking any true emergency calls and not providing skilled and efficient emergency services to people whom are sick, on the verge of death, or in grave danger.

I support E.O., and pregnant women should be allowed to leave their jobs and come back without fear or retaliation, but not when potentially my and other peoples' lives are at risk due to 911 centers being understaffed or have employees who are under/improperly trained.

/I'm okay with this (firing)
//cry me a river
///csb
//// I hope I'm never in need of efficient and skilled emergency 911 operators in that county.
// Come at me bro!
// Get off my lawn!

Probably as hard as it is for men to admit that if they were the ones to get pregnant that maternity leave would be at least a year with pay plus full benefits.

It seems more likely hat they were fired due to attitude or for using pregnancy as an excuse for a poor performance. Some southern states are likely to tiptoe around any issues that may be deemed as racist or discriminatory.

Btw subby, nice one.

I get called that when I wear my Coogi hoody.

FUBU was popular when I was in middle school, way back in the late 90's... And mostly hispanics wore them... but you could find people of every race with FUBU's on, even a few asians...

Don't Troll Me Bro!: One of my old coworkers had a family member that worked in nicu. He told me about someone that named their kid Sh_thead. Of course, the kid was there because it was born addicted to heroin, or some other drug (can't remember). It was supposedly pronounced shiathee-add, according to the belligerent junkie mother. Yeah, go ahead and name your kid that; he'll hate you for it. (He'll probably hate you more for getting him addicted to heroin before he even took his first breath.) It doesn't matter how badly you want people to pronounce it a certain way, when people read it they will see Sh_thead. When he turns in a job application or a resume, it's going straight in the trash. every. single. time.

I guarantee he'll get a job. I work at a large corporation and we have TONS of sh_theads there

Not feeling the sympathy, both for the stupid names as well as the fact that they probably tried to game the system by getting pregant, getting a job early on, then trying to claim maternity leave when they can't keep performing the job, which was their goal in the first place. Had a shiatty coworker who did just this once - she signs up with a team that unloads trailers and stocks shelves, starts getting a little chubby, and three months after she's hired "ho noes, in cants lift stuffs!!11 BABEEEE!!11". That trash was reassigned to clothing/baby crap department, and continued to make our higher rate of pay. People who had been working those positions for over ten years were making less than that disgusting mooch.

As a Vagina American, let me just say that oftentimes my fellow Vagina Americans really farking piss me off.

This is stupid logic. The six months is already gone, so your contention is that you should fire the women because it will be 3 months of maternity and a year of re-training before they're ready. And you'd suggest replacing them with... new employees who will have to start from the beginning of their training anyway?

I am going to hazard a guess that you are male. You might feel differently about this issue if you weren't.

I suspect places like Hooters have a problem with waitresses moving about in hot pants, pushing a belly the size of a watermelon in front of them.

That particular kink is more popular than you might think.

I was told by a dude at work, a black guy, that it has to do with rejecting the white man's Christian slave names. I cant verify if this is true. Also, his name was Bill.

I heard the same thing years ago -- shortly before the 'Back To Africa' movement in the 80's. Everything was cool in the 70's, then out came 'Roots' and the shiat hit the fan. By the 90's everyone of color was a Nubian Prince or Princess or descended from one. That was when the quest for equality -- which was doing very well in the 70's, switched to 'Separate BUT Equal'.

By the 90's it seemed like they had exhausted the supply of real African names and started making them up. You could buy books of Black names for babies and spot those made up pretty easily. About the same time, they started trading in their platform shoes and bell bottoms for dashiki's, robes, Muslim beards, fingernails so long they curled and Kwanza popped up.

For the men, Afro's and other hair styles switched to shaving their heads bald and looking like pricks with ears. The Jamaican Invasion didn't help things either, with Dreadlocks and scraggly beards followed by Cornrows.

Black specific businesses started popping up, like FUBU (For Us By Us), Ebony and the like -- something white businesses were not allowed to do. Then came Ebonics. Right about the same time that it became basically a rite of passage to have a prison record and Black kids started mimicking prison dress.

Sometime in the late 80's, it suddenly became popular to be a 'baby daddy' or 'baby momma'. One Black guy told me it was to build a warrior race. A decade later I read where this 'warrior race' was spending most of it's time killing each other off. That was when fist fights had turned into gang stomps, losers returned with guns and shot up everyone, gangs started drive by shootings in their own neighborhoods and a minor argument could turn into a stabbing.

BTW. No matter what race a woman is, if her employer doesn't want anyone pregnant workin ...

That's good to hear. Maybe the name itself won't be such a bad thing, but the handicap he started with, combined with the environment he'll most likely be raised in will be hard to overcome.
