Good. Now my husband won't drag me to their concert. I used to love them, but the last live concert was the Eddie Van Halen show - they had David Lee Roth's vocals turned waaaayyy down and Eddie's guitar turned waaaaay up. One of the worst concerts I've ever been to, and I saw Nickelback in Iowa.

No, most overrated band ever, with the exception of U2.

Thing is, when Eddie's style of playing hit the scene in the mid 70s, it was game-changing. We'd listen to the records and wonder, "how does he do that?" Alex became a damn good drummer, and even Michael Anthony became a good bass player. Roth was a great front-man for the live shows. From the first album into the early 80s, a Van Halen concert was a party. Back then, just going to a rock concert was different than it is now.

Van Halen was an incredible unit for their time. But just like an old movie that doesn't age well, or an Olympic gymnast in her 50s, Van Halen is a shell of its former self.

I can only stand them for about 10 seconds before changing the channel.

Any chance the problem isn't animosity...maybe Eddie's too far off the wagon, or his cancer's back, and the publicity machine won't let that news out.

Yup. I was 21 when the first album came out. There was absolutely nothing like it.

Saw Van Hagar a few years back and wouldn't waste that money again.

I had been overseas in the Army. When I got back my little brother still lived at home and I didn't even get a chance to unpack and he was "you've got to hear this" so we sat in my Mom's living room and blasted VH.

And to think, Eddie built those guitars himself. Piecing together bodies, and necks, and pickups. Those crazy striped guitars where his design, a kid in his basement with a roll of car pinstriping...not only did he play and sound like no one else before, he created looks like no one else before.

I should stop posting. Or drinking.

Well in all fairness subby it has actually been five years since they got back together with DLR. At least if this is the end, they're going out the best way possible.

I would have had to wear something to drown out all sound for nickleback, god I hate that band.

I think this just proves Eddie is still the prick he was always known to be, its why I gave up caring after seeing their interview after their MTV announcement the first time they were supposed to be recording with Dave, sure Dave is over the top but thats what made him a great frontman, Eddie should just play guitar and shut the fark up.

dinwv: Hey last year I saw Cheap Trick in Iowa....... made going to Iowa worth it.

Saw Cheap Trick once because I was forced, now if given the chance I would pay to see them, they put on a great show.

Eddie is approaching Axl Rose status for "guys that used to be rock gods who are now just assholes".

But don't kid yourselves. There was never anything overrated about them. They were the best ever.

Eddie Van Halen's bane isn't alcohol or drugs.
It's his EGO.

This is the first time in the history of the Internet that I have agreed with you, but you are correct.

According to my buddy at a radio station in Dallas, this tour is not selling very well, regardless of what the people quoted in the article are saying, and is really being canceled due to poor ticket sales.

I remember that tour... caught it at the sports arena in san diego. And you're right.
Of course, that was in the day when headliners weren't so paranoid (heh), that they only gave openers half a sound system, just half the stage. Festivals notwithstanding. That shiat would never fly today with a major act.

Anyway, i'd heard this tour was balls awesome from a few people at different stops, so it's a damn shame they couldn't pull their shiat together.

I saw that tour, had never heard of Van Halen, and they were damned awesome, blown away by them, but they were no match for the Sabbath I saw that night.

I bet David Lee said something to Eddie in regards to Michael Anthony being pushed out of the band so Eddie's son could join and then a slap fight ensued.

I lost every last shred of respect for either Van Halen brother when they chose their egos over attending the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction, just because Sammy and Mike would be there.

Much better to be thought of as a bunch of prima donna egotistical assholes than as a band who can't sell tickets.

If they were somehow the best band you ever heard, then that makes a weird sort of sense to me. Still, you really ought to seek out better music.

Are we sure this story is true? I just checked Ticketmaster and you can still buy tickets for shows that have supposedly been cancelled.

You'd think they would have ironed that out from the get, otherwise why hit the road?

Guess I could see a scotch-soaked after-party with no chicks and a sausage-fest on week 8 or whatever leading to a rehash.
Lol... Who knows, fly on the wall

Ticketmaster is usually pretty good at updating information like that. Nothing shows them being postponed either.

VHND which is pretty reliable and has contacts with the band, is saying postponed and not cancelled.

After the royal screw-job they gave Michael Anthony - who was the glue that held the band together BTW - just so Eddie's corpulent kid could play at being a rock star, I hope those jackasses go broke and die homeless and alone.

And seriously, who the fark names their kid "Wolfgang?" That's nothing but Eddie's arrogance shining through. Stevie Ray Vaughn was ten-times the guitarist that Eddie ever dreamed of being in his most vivid nocturnal ejaculation. (I know big words good)

/still dig the old-school VH stuff though

2012-05-18 01:48:58 AM
I heard a few went to the show in Seattle the other week, and proclaimed the WORST concert they ever attended. Lots of their new stuff playing, rushing thru the songs... just very poor apparently. Youtube'd a bit, and it looks pretty lame for the price they are asking for tickets.

The odd thing about Van Halen was that they did some really marvelous covers, but their original material always kinda sucked.

Yeah, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love is exactly what I'm talking about. The only thing that makes it even slightly better than a typical Nickelback throwaway is the guitar playing.
