Visited the National Zoo a couple of years ago. I will give them credit for their captive cheetah breeding program (they were, IIRC, the first to figure out the social dynamics behind their mating behavior ) and the improvements in the elephants' exhibit.

They definitely merit a "Miss Congeniality" prize. They are trying to improve things.

Betty White's been a figure in animal charities for years. She paid 50K to ship the NOLA pengiuns to Monterey for their family reunion/spa vacation. Fed Ex got tons of PR and credit for shipping them back, but Betty was the one with the checkbook and did not ask for, want, or expect an ovation for it.

She's one of the co-chairs of the board of trustees at the Los Angeles Zoo. This last January I was there and they happened to be having a party for her 90th birthday. Free cake for everyone!

Fun fact: Slash is also a trustee. Those have to be awesome meetings.

She's also a big supporter of the Zoo Veterinarians association. She apparently snuck quietly into a few talks at the conference when it was in LA a few years ago, and routinely donates to the auctions in support of AAZV. Doesn't seem to mess around when she supports a cause!
