(Sportsnet)   Jose Canseco is broke, alone and filled with regret. He also wants the reporter to fake an orgasm. Just go read this already, it's the most insane (and sad) athlete profile you'll find anywhere   (sportsnet.ca) divider line 77

BOO FINLAND!

Canseco played a minor league game against our local team (The Chico Heat) a few years ago. We were going to boo him but it seemed like beating a dead horse at that point, especially since they used him as a pitcher. I actually felt a little bad for the guy.

He at least gets my respect for coming clean. Instead of being a lieing turd like Clemens, Mcgwire, Sosa, and Bonds. and the rest.....

It has been at least 12 years since the ex-Bash Brother let a reporter spend time with him, see his house and experience a day in his life.

I can't believe any have asked.

Am I reading this right? He sends out a weekly tweet for people to write him into the All Star Game? We should make that happen, I would watch that game and starts a pool on when he snaps another ligament.

Canseco came up to Ottawa to help out with a local charity drive for CHEOs autism program. He did an autograph signing and a homerun derby. So he's cool in that regard. The rest, well you read the article.

Saddest? At least Jose is still in good shape and has his health. If you really want a sad ex-pro-athlete story, read up on William "The Refrigerator" Perry.

Yeah, it's real impressive when you cheat your whole career, then "come clean" by f*cking everyone else that you helped start cheating so you can make money. Real respect-worthy.

F*ck Jose Canseco.

i think just yesterday someone said in a MLB thread they had juuuuuust done that. something like he has a little booth, and just sits there staring at his smartphone and then when someone walks up, once the money changes hands, he signs your ball or whatever and then goes back to his phone.

fark Canseco

Season ticket holder for the Newark Bears when I lived there. He played for the Bears for a couple of months when after the Yankees claimed him off waivers in 2000 (mainly to prevent the Jays from getting him as opposed to actually wanting him) and he failed to make the Angels' roster in spring training in 2001 (Ozzie had been the Bears' "star" for several seasons at this point and convinced the team to take a chance on him). He did decently with the Bears; well enough that the White Sox signed him mid-season. As soon as he arrived in Chicago, he started badmouthing the Bears (and the Atlantic League as a whole).

/fun times, those Bears games. My seats were right behind the visitor's dugout. Talked shiat with John Rocker on a couple of occasions.

He should sue MLB for allowing that baseball to bounce off his head, which obviously lead to concussion-like syndromes.

That was me. And that's about all I saw in the 10 minutes we browsed the store. Wasn't really a booth, just a table set up in the middle of the store. We only saw a couple of people buy things for him to sign, there must be busier times or else he wouldn't be in there several times a week. You could shoot a photo of him at no cost, actually that was more than I expected.

This is what being a famous rich dick can lead to. Mark McGwire juiced even longer than Jose, but he's allowed to coach in the league. Sadly, he only has himself to blame.

But its not really that sad--I bet he makes 200k a year just hustlin' his name.

That about sums it up. He was a douchebag when he was playing, but was honest about the steroid issue before anyone...and he's paid the price.

They made a 8-minute video about Pete Rose and his memorabilia booth as part of a "30 for 30 shorts" series and posted it on Grantland a couple days ago. Pretty interesting.

slayer199: but was honest about the steroid issue before anyone

You don't get credit for narcing on everyone after you're done with the game and bitter that no one wants to hire you and you desperately want to be relevant again. That's not how life works.

/haven't watched baseball since the steroid era ended
//sorry, I like performances being enhanced. If I wanted to watch people perform at subpar levels, I'd watch the Mariners
///how about steroids as a leveler - if you play for the teams that have low payrolls, you can juice, but once you get a big contract, then you can't anymore

I don't see any harm in giving him a pat on the head for it, but there's no altruism in waiting until after your career is over and when severe financial strains are already looming over your head, and "coming clean" provides a convenient money grab.

If he wrote the book sometime in the 90s, I'd have a MUCH different opinion.
