Illegal moonshine?

Redundancy is redundant

Uh, subby? Cops always have the best shiat. If I REALLY need a drink, I call 911.

If you need a ride to the morgue that's what 911 is for.

How do so many misdirected texts end up with exactly the wrong person rather than somebody who says "Why the Face?" and deletes it?

How exactly could they be charged with anything? Usually when they set up a sting an actual exchange of good occurs. This was just some people meeting a cop.

What? Troopers don't drink, don't look the other way?

Why is this illegal again?

Astazha: Why is this illegal again?

The usual answer is that bad hooch can kill people or, in other words, we can't tax it.

Astazha: Why is this illegal again?

Because the proper excise taxes are rarely collected when selling moonshine. Basically the same reason why you have to pay income tax every year.

Alchohol distributors have good lobbyists. They're constantly trying to get states to increase taxes/ban interstate transportation of alchohol so that small wineries/breweries have to go through them if they want to expand.

They did, there are tax credits for that.

It wasn't moonshine. It was bootlegged liquor. And the cop is a dick. (which is a redundancy)

All cops are dicks therefor all dicks are cops?

As someone who knows nothing about moonshine, what is the big deal about it? Only thing I can guess is that it's cheaper, but there is lots of inexpensive booze in drugstores around here. Although it might not be top notch, I will pay the few bucks more knowing it wasn't brewed in an old radiator, and I can drink it without fear of going blind.

1. It's astronomically cheaper
2. It's safe to make (by far the most dangerous thing is the extremely strong ethanol that's produced--if someone doesn't realize that they're drinking undiluted spirits, they can kill themselves via good ol' ethanol posining)

The "old radiator" and "go blind" fears are mostly relics of prohibition; unscrupulous producers would distill denatured (industrial) alcohol and pass it off as the good stuff (or sometimes they wouldn't even distill it).

First, this story is not about moonshine. Moonshine is a thing of the past; almost no one is making it illegally anymore. It actually costs far more to make than legal booze. It's too expensive and people don't want it, when bootlegged booze is available. There's a few distilleries in GA and NC that are now making legal small batch corn whiskey, using traditional recipes. It's kind of pricey, when you can find it.

Thanks for the follow up clarifications. I wondered why anyone would want to bother with moonshine when you can get drunk easily otherwise.

Aside from taste, I just don't get it (even price doesn't really come into play, since you can get "tall boy" cans of beer super cheap).

/although I am curious to know how corn batch whiskey make from traditional recipes would taste.

Moonshine actually is much cheaper to produce. It may not be cheaper to buy after it has changed hands a few times, with the producers and middlemen following the whole "supply and demand" thing. If produced right, it can cost ~$1.00 per drinking strength bottle, and taste as good as or better than anything you'll be able to buy in a store. Emphasis on "in produced right."

sgh46: Moonshine actually is much cheaper to produce.

It really isn't. It used to be, but sugar prices are just too high these days. Moonshining has declined dramatically over the last few decades. The only reason the practice still exists is that more than half of the price of a bottle of commercial liquor is tax and this does give the moonshiner an advantage if he is in a large, dry area and he doesn't have to compete with bootleggers. Far more money can be made growing pot and it's less risky in remote areas.

JackieRabbit: It used to be, but sugar prices are just too high these days.

A 10# bag of sugar costs ~$5.00 and will produce ~8 bottles of 80 proof. That's a bit over 60 cents per bottle. And sugar is the expensive route. Corn is cheaper, certain fruits are as well when local and in season. It's not about materials cost...
