You managed doubling your savings over the decade of near-zero market growth, but lost 80% of it in the time the DOW went up 50%?

The sad thing is that you KNOW you're doing it. You KNOW it's dishonest. But you don't have anything other than your faith that Democrats are bad and Republicans are good. But, like the Catholic Church and protecting pedophiles, you are willing to take all kinds of liberties with truth because of a perceived greater good.

Well, obviously. The graph has the word "Democraps" on it for fark's sake. I think the point still holds, President Bush did plenty to ensure that unnatural growth occurred during his time in office. He stood by and watched one of the greatest bubbles in the modern era grew to the point where it self destructed. Who else can claim a term filled with such irrational exuberance?

He was handed the Clinton Recession and it was compounded by the 9/11 attacks that no one saw coming. So the first two years in office don't count. And the Demoncraps took over the congress in 2006 so the last two don't count either since their socialist plots created uncertainty in the market which reduced economic output. so he only had 48 months that he can really claim as his own. And all of that time was growth.

He's writing a book for the same reason they all write books. So conservative pundits and websites can buy up crates of them and give them out to the rubes they preach to. Hell, if Palin can do it, Dubya can.

After all, he ran a total of zero profitable businesses, traded Sammy Sosa from the Rangers, and launched a trillion dollar tax-payer funded trip to the desert, also known as "Operation: Daddy Hug Me."

Why shouldn't we listen to his advice when it comes to economics?

I've said it for a long time. George Bush Jr was the Colonel Cargill of presidents:

""Colonel Cargill was so awful a marketing executive that his services were much sought after by firms eager to establish losses for tax purposes. His prices were high, for failure often did not come easily. He had to start at the top and work his way down, and with sympathetic friends in Washington, losing money was no simple matter. It took months of hard work and careful misplanning. A person misplaced, disorganized, miscalculated, overlooked everything and open every loophole, and just when he thought he had it made, the government gave him a lake or a forest or an oilfield and spoiled everything. Even with such handicaps, Colonel Cargill could be relied on to run the most prosperous enterprise into the ground. He was a self-made man who owed his lack of success to nobody."

― Joseph Heller, Catch-22"

Former President Bush was soon informed that filling in a crossword puzzle did not really count as "writing a book".

It was later explained to him that a crossword puzzle requires completing words and not just drawing pictures in the empty squares.

Frustrated, the former President threw the book on the floor and stomped off to his room.

FTFA: "This is like Tim Tebow writing a treatise on passing accuracy, like Fox News releasing a how-to guide on fairness and balance in television coverage, like Rush Limbaugh teaching a gender sensitivity class, like Newt Gingrich lecturing about the sanctity of marriage, like Emily Post publishing a collection of "Yo Mamma" jokes. For sheer chutzpah this blows away Michael "Brownie" Brown penning a book on Hurricane Katrina and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt "Let's Cut Taxes and Increase Defense Spending" Romney lecturing anyone on the deficit."

It's also like Vlad the Impaler writing scathingly about Guantanamo Bay. It's like Basil II talking about opthalmology. It's like Amelia Earhart writing about reading braille, or Hellen Keller writing about how to hide in an attic.

It's like a Republican talking about economic responsibiity. It's just farking insane.

fta: ...like Emily Post publishing a collection of "Yo Mamma" jokes.

No love for the Emily Post joke? Wow, tough crowd.

While seemingly ludicrously counter-intuitive, Dumbya writing a book on economic growth was actually predictable in hindsight given the Right's predilection for cognitive dissonance and ret-conning reality in order to rehabilitate their images after the fact.

All the rest of the BushCo crew seem to have books out softening their image and re-imagining/ re-booting their "legacy" why not the leader of the pack?

That noted, I'm not buying this.

bdub77: Let me summarize:

"Look at everything I did from 2001-2008...and do the opposite."

I don't honestly know. Look at what the situation was during his Presidency: you inherit a "technology" bubble and have essentially no opportunity (horrific policies or otherwise) to even influence what sort of recovery would occur before the United States endures the September 11th attacks. Yeah, yeah, there's a billion or so comments that could be made about whether that was preventable, whether his attack on Afghanistan's Taliban-run government was executed will the proper diligence, ect, but I'm looking at this from the perspective of the Eastern Roman Empire. He's more of a Constantine X Doukas figure. Incompetent? Likely. Betray and otherwise misled by his advisers? Even more likely.

Freddie Mae -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- I see the heads who are here; I want to thank you all for coming -- (laughter) -- have committed to provide more money for lenders. They've committed to help meet the shortage of capital available for minority home buyers.

Fannie Mae recently announced a $50 million program to develop 600 homes for the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Franklin [Raines], I appreciate that commitment. They also announced $12.7 million investment in a condominium project in Harlem. It's the beginnings of a series of initiatives to help meet the goal of 5.5 million families. Franklin told me at the meeting where we kicked this office, he said, I promise you we will help, and he has, like many others in this room have done.

Freddie Mac recently began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers and create greater opportunities for homeownership. One of the programs is designed to help deserving families who have bad credit histories to qualify for homeownership loans. ...

Freddie Mac recently began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers and create greater opportunities for homeownership. One of the programs is designed to help deserving families who have bad credit histories to qualify for homeownership loans. ...

Like I said, I did OK under Clinton and had a good starting point. I had 54 months of nearly uninterupted growth without a major "correction" under Bush when everything did great for me. The last year of his term was bad and (through no control of mine) my retirement was locked into a fund family where I could not remove it.

After Obama took office the crash continued to the lowest DOW in years. Then we had 28 months before a correction, but I was starting my recovery from a much lower point than I started the Bush years. My medical insurance went through the roof further preventing adding to my savings.

Then we had the next "correction" and things dropped again. I have been able to slowly remove the funds from being locked down because they have met the maturity and now I am doing more self directed saving and investing.

That being said, over 95% time President Obama has a speech the DOW drops at least 30 points. Looking back at history, that percentage is higher than any other President that I have found. All the others were about 50/50 on whether it dropped after a speech. Carter, Reagan, GHW, Clinton, GW - heck, even Nixon. Obama and the market just do not play well together.

Really.

The good ol' boy was an act. With the cowboy costumes and brush clearing. The dumb part came naturally.

Anyone notice that every President in recent memory ages drastically? Even Obama who is relatively young, looks old as hell. That job ages people. Except Bush. I think it's the "not giving a fark" factor.

No, you miss the complex relationships involved in Bush's economic policies. Tax cuts was just the most visible, you forgot gut regulation, start two wars, increase the size of the Federal government to unprecedented levels, appoint cronies to key positions, hand out no bid contracts worth hundreds of billions of dollars, send hundreds of billions of dollars to war zones with no oversight, and increase federal deficit spending.

See, this is what happens when you let the cheerleader play QB. The worst part is that not only did he get put in the game, but it was during the second half of the championship, where he squandered the lead that his predecessor had built up.

Goodfella: I've said it for a long time.

I fancy him as more of a General P P Peckem myself. Relies on bad information to make his decisions, delegates incessantly, is much more dedicated to style over substance, and is in constant competition with his peers while actual crises surrounded his administration.

"'Sir, I have an ex-Sergeant Wintergreen on your other telephone. He's been trying to reach you all morning.'

'General, I can't get Wintergreen,' Colonel Cargill shouted, 'His line is busy.' General Peckem was perspiring freely as he lunged for the other telephone.

'Wintergreen!'

'Peckem, you son of a biatch-'

'Wintergreen, have you heard what they've done?'

'-what have you done, you stupid bastard?'

'They put Scheisskopf in charge of everything!' Wintergreen was shrieking with rage and panic. 'You and your goddam memorandums! They've gone and transferred combat operations to Special Services!'

'Oh, no,' moaned General Peckem. 'Is that what did it? My memoranda? Is that what made them put Scheisskopf in charge? Why didn't they put me in charge?'

'Because you weren't in Special Services any more. You transferred out and left him in charge. And do you know what he wants? Do you know what the bastard wants us all to do?'

'Sir, I think you'd better talk to General Scheisskopf,' pleaded the sergeant nervously. 'He insists on speaking to someone.'

'Cargill, talk to Scheisskopf for me. I can't do it. Find out what he wants.' Colonel Cargill listened to General Scheisskopf for a moment and went white as a sheet. 'Oh, my God!' he cried, as the phone fell from his fingers. 'Do you know what he wants? He wants us to march. He wants everybody to march!'"
