Philip Francis Queeg: Fatal mistake Speaker Boehner! Those sandwiches were laced with arugula and brown mustard. Over the next 48 hours you will be transformed into a socialist marxist fascist Muslim!

BWAHAHAHA!

It's a little-known fact, but "ARUGULA" is the sound made by old-time car horns. People used to honk whenever they saw some along the road, hence the name.

Are you forgetting the fact that the Democrats have voted for major tax cut packages multiple times since Obama has taken office? The only thing anyone agrees on is that we need spending cuts. The disagreements are to what areas, but unfortunately austerity is the name of the game in Washington. Apparently both sides also agree that low taxes on multimillionaires help their electoral chances are good for freedom, so I guess at least there's some consensus out there. Though, rhetorically, I suppose you could say they claim to be on different sides of the issue...

Shaggy_C: The downgrade was based upon the fact that there was no long-term consensus about how to bring down the debt as exacerbated by prima facie evidence that regular payments from us on said debt is no longer necessarily a reliable thing because, you know, we just don't feel like it. And there still isn't and apparently it still ain't. We deserved to be downgraded and will be again if this shiat keeps up.

Also, there is now a bipartisan agreement in place to reduce the deficit but it seems certain parties wish to renege on that. And now you know the rest of the story.

No, the downgrade was based solely on the fact that for the first time you had elected US representatives talking about allowing the US to default.

There is no issue regarding the US debt as far as credit ratings are concerned. The US has always been in debt (bar one year in your history I think) and always paid its debt. You are a powerhouse of an economy. How you bring down your debt is really an internal matter that isn't of much interest to ratings agencies. That you started talking about not paying your debt was new, and that was the reason for the downgrade.

From the text of the decision: Our lowering of the rating was prompted by our view on the rising public debt burden and our perception of greater policymaking uncertainty, consistent with our criteria (see "Sovereign Government Rating Methodology and Assumptions," June 30, 2011, especially Paragraphs 36-41).

The fight over the debt ceiling was a big piece of it, but don't pretend that the debt itself was not a point of emphasis in the decision. They lowered our rating because they have no faith in the US government to make any headway in fixing the deficit in the medium term.

Philip Francis Queeg: qorkfiend: bdub77: I'm kind of surprised Boehner is pushing Obama on the debt ceiling again. Last time it almost cost him his Speakership. I think this agenda is being pushed by people even more to the right than he is, and he's acceeding just to stay in power. To be perfectly honest I think he's in his death throes as Speaker. Cantor is breathing down his neck to get rid of him and it seems to me that Obama isn't going to compromise on this. Stuck between Barack and a hard place.

The sandwich might as well be his last as Speaker, like a Death Row final supper.

I dunno; I think Cantor might be very happy being the puppetmaster.

If that was the case, Cantor wouldn't publicly undercut Boehner as often as he does.

If Cantor becomes speaker, I will promise to continue voting in every local election, as has been my practice, to vote the farking R-Party out of office. If Cantor loses his next primary, I will promise to continue voting in every local election, as has been my practice, to vote the farking R-Party out of office.

There's a few of us non-R folk here in VA, but I'm not aware of any which fears us much more than the think of a Cantor being in the spot-place.

No I am not forgetting that the Democrats have voted for major tax cut packages at the behest of the Republicans in order to be able to get anything done. I am also not forgetting that the Republicans have all signed a pledge to never raise a dime of increased revenue, a pledge which they hold more dear than their oath of office to the nation. I am also not forgetting that polls have consistently showed that a significant majority of Americans favor a mix of spending cuts and tax increases.

Those, who like the Congressional Republicans, favor ONLY spending cuts and no increases in taxes are a small minority in this country

Of course debt is the issue, it is just that it was the fight over the debt ceiling that led to the downgrade. I think S&P said a few days after the downgrade that they thought US politics had become too unstable and divisive. No one has ever doubted the US's ability to pay its debt, until you suddenly have a bunch of loons saying no to any tax rises, at all, and threatening to allow the US to default!

Utterly utterly mental, and now they say they want to do it again?

Europe is already struggling thanks to the uncertainty in Greece. The Republicans playing silly buggers will not go down well. Not that they have much of a reputation left to lose.

Republican are facing a difficult situation, because they allowed themselves to once again be hobo-shanked by President Obama. Whatever political naivety that Obama may displayed in his first two years is certainly gone now- he managed to manipulate the GOP into a position where there's absolutely nothing they can do to avoid raising the debt ceiling, (since that was part of last year's deal- they can vote against it, but it gets raised no matter how the vote goes) and they simultaneously look like idiots for allowing the default cuts to happen to Defense and Medicare.

There's really no way to weasel out of it, either. Sure, their core group of the elderly and insane will blame Obama, but then, those people are going to hate Obama no matter what he does. Normal people will tend to notice that it was Republicans have consistently refused to compromise on anything. Boehner probably offered Obama everything up to (and probably including) a blow-job in return for negating the automatic defense cuts. Hopefully, Obama told him to cram it. Republicans talk the talk- it's time to see if they can walk the walk.

If Republicans do manage to hold the debt ceiling hostage and incur another downgrade, which they seem to be determined to do unless we somehow find $15 Trillion in quatrters under the nation's couch cushions or something, will it be just S&P again or will Moody's and/or Fitch jump on board this time? Anyone want to guess?

Still, if he is in a no-win situation, his best move may be to flip over the board; create chaos by sending the country into default and see if he can fight through,

Only an idiot plays chicken with the debt limit. Only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots does so twice. Ms. Bachmann and her associates worry me. I have a feeling that she and her associates are carving a great dark hole in the middle of the Congress and when they go down, anyone nearby will go with them. I appreciate their strength and that is why this brinksmanship worries me. By turning every disagreement into the ultimate showdown you have effectively weakened our ability to govern should they attempt to derail the government. You are going to take steps to prevent it and you will start by breaking off your relationship with the Tea Party.

You will do this because I have asked you and because your loyalty to our people should be greater than your ambition.

And because I have poisoned your drink.

Ask the gold standard nut jobs how gold has "real" value with out a market to sell it on just like "fiat currency". That's always a fun game to play.

Exactly things only have values that individuals or societies place on them. That's why I'm advocating for a purely sandwich based economy. It's just as valid as any other type of currency. Plus we can always just make more sandwiches.

Step 1. TaxFartB0ng0 has the mint stamp out about 20 million platinum coins with a face value of $1,000,000 each and store them in Fort Knox. (This may even be legal.)

Step 2. The Kenyan usurper hands out these coins to private companies as bounties for space based cargo delivery, services and tech. (Communications, telescopes, weather tracking, etc.)

Step 3. Everyone profits. Maybe even limited inflation, the coins are a royal pain in the arse to get and the economic activity generated in the efforts to obtain them benefits all. It is effectively exporting goods and services to extraterrestrials. The real value Earth gets in exchange is not some alien currency, it is increased tech and know-how gleaned in the efforts to generate these 'exports'.
