Hey, someone just mentioned this on Slashdot and I made a snarky remark about it.

Maybe we are connected cosmically.

Are you a girl?

They need the other 5 nights to wash off the smug.

Might be one of those places that buys the ingredients the days that they're open.

They didn't say what two nights. It could be Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday if it is the owner's side business and they work other jobs during the week.

And it doesn't really matter which two nights those are if they're still using ingredients from three weeks ago.

They shop at local farmer's markets and the food co op the days they are open. Ingredients are never old. I've had their pizza many times.

Woo hoo! Glad these guys got some good publicity. I buy pizza from them at least once a week, and am friends with the owner (who was interviewed.) They're stationed about 3 blocks from my house.

If you're ever in New Orleans, seriously look them up. Some of the best pizza you'll ever have.

They don't use Sysco tomato paste cut with water to make their sauce so I despise them. SMUG SMUG!

I know them personally.

They're operating out of a test kitchen, pick-up only. Just because you're not operating 5 of the 7 days a week doesn't mean your ingredients are sitting in the fridge rotting. They prep just the same as any place, with the same timeframes. Just happens to be 2 days a week.

Other than a few standards, they change their pizzas every week. Or twice a week. So if they have a pizza with arugula... they source that arugula a day or less before opening that night.

Look up "pop up restaurant". Its a new trend, and its a very cool way for people to have access to unique types of food without someone having to invest all the time and energy in opening/licensing/leasing their own place.

The only reason I can get filipino food, good mexican food, and NY style pizza in New Orleans is because of pop-up restaurants.

The My Little Pony Killer: And it doesn't really matter which two nights those are if they're still using ingredients from three weeks ago.

You don't know anything about operating a pop-up restaurant. They're open Thursday and Sunday, if you want to know the specifics.

They get their ingredients either that day or the day before.

They don't even have the space to store ingredients beyond those two days, as they're using someone elses kitchen.

How is this so hard to understand?

The Applebees of the world store everything frozen because they can and their customers don't care.

People who run real restaurants (7 days a week or pop-up)... spend the morning buying ingredients for the day (except stuff that can be stored for weeks at a time, like dairy, etc.)

I'm good friends with a bunch of chefs. They're out, as I type this, ordering ingredients that need to be fresh.

I thought Facebook ads were there only to be screengrabbed and posted only when something extremely weird popped up on the side of your page. Like how it is always asking me to help cure addicts or something. I didn't know anyone ever clicked on them, unless the mouse hit one by accident.

Oh, absolutely. Everybody knows that things like pepperoni and cheese need to be just-made for them to be any good. No self-respecting Italian chef would just let that crap hang around for weeks on end.

I can't believe that it took this long for people to ponder if FB was actually any good at what it's entire business plan and investor sales pitch is built on.

Who is ever going to use FB mobile when the ads hit?

I talked to a contractor today who is going to do some small jobs at my house. He said his client list tripled after yelp started. He no longer pays for paper adverts. He does not need facebook. Yelp may have its problems, but the contractors (he was not the only one) have all said yelp's been good for their business. (One hauler told me that, in his business, all he has to do is show up on time and he gets a good review. Tradesmen who don't show up on time are screwed.)

//technically, their Facebook ad worked: it got them noticed and reported on by NPR (we in the journalism business call that "re-tweeting"), and now people nationwide know about them. Also, they're now on Fark, which I understand is read by a lot of fatties.

I can see why Facebook is upping their stock issue and the per-share price. They want to cash in before anyone figures out that they're this decade's AOL.

The article confused me. It seems like a bad example. It says 74% of NO residents already "like" the restaurant, so are you really going to get much new business? The better example would be to find a new restaurant, and have them use Facebook to advertise their grand opening, maybe put up a coupon in the ad, then see how much business you get.

2012-05-16 04:48:21 PM
CSB: A smoothie shop near us ran a Facebook ad for "superhero day" a few weeks ago. They were giving out free comic books to kids and had a guy in a Spiderman suit show up. We took our three-year-old, who's big into superheroes. There were probably a dozen other parents, all with kids, who showed up, and all had heard about it on FB.

We wound up spending about $10 on 2 smoothies. Not something I'd usually buy, but the rugrat got his picture taken with Spiderman, which made his day, so it was worth it. I may stop back in at some point, but still not sure how often I'll be dropping $6 on cups of pureed fruit. So the ad wasn't a total bust for them, but I'm not sure how much repeat business it will bring.

No. 74% are friends of people who already like it. Not current friends.

Its not yet *that* popular down here. The sheer majority of their business comes from the immediate neighborhood, and through word of mouth.

Sounds like their business model would be better served by sending reminder emails and posting on facebook every Thursday and Sunday morning and throughout the day to remind people they're open that day. Mayhap with pics of the delicious speciality pizzas of the day.

/meh, they're probably doing this already
//I just like like saying 'mayhap'

I just checked out their Facebook page. I think the obvious problem, as mentioned before, is that they're open two days a week.

It sounds like they create unique and custom pies, which is nice. But I doubt many people with a pizza craving are going to keep this at the forefront of their mind. I know when I want a pizza for the family, I want something quick and convenient. Even during my single days, I'd have to be a big fan to keep up which two days they were open.

It looks like they're doing right by keeping up with their Facebook page by posting when they're open and what the specialties will be. I follow several local restaurants that I don't go to often, but like to keep up with their specials.

You're right. Hipster food bugs the hell out of me.

I mean, they could've just gone with "upload.wikimedia.org," and had the whole menu be stuffed with crap like, "This artisanal margherita creation is crafted from a hand-tossed, cracker-thin, cornmeal-dusted crust, which is then lightly-kissed with extra-extra virgin olive oil before being dressed with fresh roma-tomatillo puttanesca and a blend of asiago, romano, parmesan and our house-made mozzarella/buffalo, then fired in an imported, wood-fired stone oven first built by old-world Sicilian craftsmen, then carefully disassembled, packed, shipped, and lovingly-recreated right here in our kitchen."

Screw you. Little Caesar's sucks, but at least they're only selling me pizza. Not pizza and a goddamned pretentious kennel pedigree.

Tip: call it in around 1pm or so, and schedule a time to pick it up whenever you actually want to eat. If you call at 7 or 8, you may have a long-ass wait. And don't go there to order... again, it'll take forever.

Also realize the pizzas are freaking huge! I'm not kidding- it doesn't fit through my door straight. Me and the wife get dinner (each) and a lunch (each) out of one.

GM wasted it's money too, because the main demographic of Facebook probably can't afford a car loan.
