What the heck is he doing out there hunting during the season? Doesn't he have a game t-...oh. Nevermind.

By the way, he could have been confused. Laws can be misleading. There's bear baiting and bear 'bating.

While I'm not a hunter, I do remember hearing somewhere that in some places like Alberta, it's legal to set bait traps for black bears, but not grizzlies.

And he did it with a bow which I think is pretty badass. I have no problem with this situation

FTFA: "and it's illegal in 18 U.S. states, plus British Columbia, because it's considered a cowardly way to kill, even by those who normally support hunting. "

Considering he plays for the Canucks, no shock here.

Baiting an animal is not hunting, it is lazy and unethical. He should be embarrassed of his kill, not proud. Farking gutless.

Doesn't really seem any more sporting than shooting an animal in a cage.

When I fish, I bait the hook. I guess this is inhumane too.

/doesn't eat mammals
/doesn't care if anyone else does so long as it's not a domestic animal such as a cat or a dog (I read somewhere that dog meat is tough)

So?

Ambushing animals you plan to eat and killing them is pretty normal. While you cannot outwardly bait for deer around here, I know plenty of people who plant clover and corn near the treeline on their properties. And in the trees they hang deer stands.

See where this is going?

He killed a black bear not a grizzly, he did it in a fashion that a lot of hunters consider cowardly, yes he did it with a bow and when the bear was stuck it ran off to bleed out and die, in this case a gun would have been more humane. He has made no indication that he will eat the meat of the bear. Hunt all you want, but if you are going to post the video and make light of it on the internet, the internet will reserve it's own opinion.

Oh and sitting in a tree with a bow waiting for a bear to fall in your set up bait is not badass, knife between your teeth and shards of broken glass taped to your knuckles in the woods would be badass,

Badass? If there is one thing furthest from badass it's bear baiting. It doesn't matter if he did it with a bow.

A. Clever headline.

B. This isn't hunting. It's a disgusting practice started so little-dicked "men" with inferiority complexes can feel like rugged tough guys by killing an animal without ever putting themselves in any danger or actually doing any hunting. For a point of reference, it's the kind of "hunting" Dick Cheney likes to do.

C. Two Girls. No Cup. : )

Look unless he attacked the bear with a knife that had a blade no longer then eight inches he is a pussy. Real men kill bears with their hands.

2012-05-16 02:45:38 PM
From a PR perspective, he's a bit of a shmuck. Lots of people don't like hunting, including a heck of a lot of folks out here on the left coast, so throwing it out there and going "HAY GUYZ LOOK WUT I KILLT LOL" is pretty damn stupid.

The baiting I didn't know about until reading this article. It's a little cheap. But, if it's legal in that jurisdiction, then you can't criticize the guy for doing it - especially if the guide was the one who initiated it and said "hey, there's your bear, get'im."

Additionally, Alberta = Canada's Texas, so we're lucky they didn't put him out in a stand with a bow and cut loose a murderer or something for him to shoot at.

The only time I've ever not been disgusted with baiting was when reading a book by a guy the brits would call in to kill man-eating tigers in india way back in the day. He eventually laid down his gun for a camera.

/good book, can't remember what it's called though
//'batin on the other "hand"is perfectly acceptable.

Sure I can. The legality of an act does not prevent it from being morally repugnant, just as some things that are illegal are not immoral.

Fishing with bait: legal and acceptable.

Hunting with bait: apparently repugnant.

Meh, I don't give a damn about a bear, so it's no big deal. Kinda silly to be proud of it, though.

Okay, fair point. I guess that what I meant was if it's legal to hunt bears, and if baiting is a legal way for hunting to occur, then he was doing it right. Not that I agree with baiting, but it's done in a lot of spots.

For those of you in this thread who are claiming that baiting a fish hook is the same as baiting this bear, you couldn't be more wrong. Baiting a hook is no guarantee of catching a fish, hell, I've baited thousands of hooks that didn't bring in a fish. It is still a challenge, a SPORT, to catch a fish with a baited hook, what this toolbag Booth did was not engaging in sport. It was a bought and paid for kill, set up by a guide so he could get himself a rug and stroke his ego.

A more appropriate comparison is if a wannabe fisherman went out to get a trophy shark, the boat captain dumped a bunch of chum in the water, a shark cruised up to the boat and the wannabe fisherman shot it with a spear gun. Would you think of that as fishing?

Fark this guy, fark the guide, and fark anyone who thinks this douchebag canned kill has anything to do with hunting.

2012-05-16 04:25:48 PM
Baiting? WTF? Really?

And if it wasn't bad enough, it doesn't sound like he has any plans to eat his kill. He's really going to kill it and leave it to lay? That's the ultimate in wastefulness & something that I can't even come close to condoning. Maybe it's the Native American in me. Maybe it's how I was raised.

I was taught to hunt all you want within the confines of the law, so long as you eat what you kill.

Does Alberta have some sort of bear problem that it's okay to practice this activity? Like, are bears attacking settlements and running off with infants? Are they toppling garbage and mussing up campfires? ....If so, and if this is the only way to cull their numbers so they're not such a nuisance to human habitation, I guess it doesn't bother me.

But if not, then it's kind of a stupid waste. What moron gets a thrill out of that sort of thing?

But of all the things to dislike Booth about, this is one of the lesser ones (he's a jesus freak, he doesn't pass the damn puck, etc.)
