Don't forget about Taiwan. There was talk about Communist China building a bridge (making judicious use of islands) to Taiwan. It probably explains lots of these enormous bridges being built in China lately. Building a skill set for the big job.

China's posturing won't end in military conflicts. They don't have the testicular fortitude. Also, they'd get their asses handed to them.

Man, I miss that guy. It was rare to see so much (apparently genuine) weirdness and cluelessness in one poster. Most of the crazies turned out to be trolls, but he was the real deal.

So you think the rivalry between America's North and South is still strong and goes back a long way?

Ain't got NOTHIN' on China and Vietnam- their rivalry and mutual hatred goes back thousands of years. This was after 938 AD, where Vietnam expelled the Chinese after being colonised and subjugated by the Chinese for a thousand years.

I doubt China will actually start to go on the warpath anytime soon. Though they're more than a match for any country in the region (though Japan, India, and Vietnam could all bloody them pretty badly), China's main concern is holding the center.

Still, it'd probably be a good idea for Japan to start doing outreach to some of the other countries that border China to form a kind of support bloc. Probably best not to do it so openly as, say, NATO (as that might be a provocation to China's image), but enough that China knows what's happening.

Japan didn't get far enough into India during the war to really piss them off, and India can supply the manpower that Japan lacks. Together, they might be able to bring some of the others on board. Vietnam suffered badly under Japanese rule, but they know China's the biggest threat. The Philippines and South Korea might be a little tougher to persuade due to the sheer scale of Japanese atrocities in those regions.

Moopy Mac: moops: China and Vietnam fought a little war around 1980. Guess who won?

Nope. China's objective for invading was supposedly to force the Vietnamese to pull their troops out of Cambodia (China was backing the Kymer Rouge) in order to stop the Chinese advance. The Vietnamese didn't bite, they pulled their troops out of the northern cities and went guerilla and reenforced Hanoi. The Chinese got a pretty good mauling in the north and decided advancing on Hanoi would be a spectacular failure and bloodbath, declared victory, destroyed everything in sight and withdrew.

China bans fishing in the south sea to prevent overfishing. Vietnam fishes anyway. This has a pretty decent possibility of resulting in overfishing, which increases food scarcity in the future, assuming Vietnam is ignoring the ban for profit rather than out of necessity, in which case it's already cause for concern.

Actually, I think China is laying the ground work for controlling all gas and oil development in the South China Sea by arguing over the small stuff. You know, to establish a track record in their defense when they do the petroleum resource grab.

This could prove interesting, since China was essentially responsible for both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

We were actually fighting the Chinese in both wars in what mainly was a test to see who had the biggest balls.

The Vietnamese have a lot to thank China for. China introduced the infamous 'black shirts', ruthless 'educators' who swept through Vietnam 'convincing' the average citizen that Communism was the way.

They probably killed more noncombatants than the war did and they left an infamous field of bones behind them. It was essentially do it their way or die in any number of horrific ways. Chinese trained 'educators' came up with the 'kid bomb' and wiring up pretty women with explosives to take out a bus of troops.

The Chinese rant about the 'Rape of Nanking' and despise the Japanese over it, but the atrocities they committed during the two 'civil' wars far surpassed anything the Japanese did.

Vietcong troops were usually trained by Chinese 'advisors'. Sort of like Vietnamese troops were trained by US advisors. It's just that the US advisors didn't slaughter anyone who happened to disagree.

Currently China is being China -- screwing everyone as often as they can get away with it.

China is also mostly responsible for 'Best Korea'. They helped form it.

China's actual claim per EEZ rules stops far short of where they say they do. It ends at about where Vietnam begins to curve to the SW.

Actually, there has been plenty of those. Poland once had many disputes and wars with Lithuania about their borderlands. Poland, being catholic and all, decided to ask for the pope for aid. The pope sent a crusader order, the Teutonic Knights. A reason for this was the pope really needed a use for them in the first place.

The Teutonic Knights were from Germany and once the knights were in prussia(I think) they began to take "pagan" land for the knightly order. The Teutonic knights attacked ALL villages perceived to be pagan. Poland had villages within its territory that were not completely christian and the knights kept attacking them, causing the polish king to eventually ALLY with LITHUANIA in order to fight the knights.
